There's so many things about this that are gross, but it's so fucked up that they asked him to put his hands behind him... while he was being held and it was impossible for him to put his arms behind him without touching the cop behind him.

The article itself mentions that they aren't all black, for example it excludes Highland Park which is bizarre to me because I have a soft spot for that neighborhood. Instead, it based it off of points of interest.... which just happened to exclude a number of black neighborhoods. Many people took it as "hey this neighborhood isn't worth visiting if you're not from Pittsburgh" and it left a pretty poor impression.

In Pittsburgh we've done our damnedest to move our minorities away from where the Whites might be. Most of the suburbs to the north and south have very few BIPOC, there's some to the west but primarily their neighborhoods are removed from where white people might go. Hell, we razed the homes of thousands of people (almost entirely black) in an area close to downtown so that we could build a shiny new hockey rink! And in the lot where the previous rink was, we said we'd rebuild some of the housing and community buildings that existed in the other spot! Except lol nah we never actually did that and the lot still remains empty.

More recently, one of our city universities released a handy image guide for what neighborhoods students should visit if they aren't familiar with Pittsburgh. It excluded all the black neighborhoods - and not as a matter of "oh they're just not near the university" but rather had them as simple blank spaces in the image.

The Hill District is labeled but does not have any points of interest.

Because, again, in the 1950s we demolished the jazz scene in the Hill district and basically kicked the neighborhood in the knees in order to make room for other things. It's a pretty common story around these parts.
