Detroit police are stretched thin and dont have the manpower for something like getting back a stolen car.

My grandfather has been on the DPD force for over 50 years and told me how much of a shit show it is. Sometimes they cant even get to murder scenes for hours because they are preoccupied with so much other shit.

Only way to get them to come for sure is to call in an officer down.

In departments like DPD, you literally come into your shift with a few hundred pending calls that the previous shift didnt have time to handle.

At that point any officer would do what he did. You have to act quick or an innocent person could get killed. Like I said earlier, an officer doesn't have to have a gun pointed at them in order to shoot first.

He wasnt being that belligerent; he was heavily under the influence and suicidal. Ontop of that, his claims of having a gun are no factor. They searched him upon arrest, hes handcuffed, and they clearly dont take his claims seriously (as they shouldnt).

Moreover, your assertion that any cop would do what this sergeant did in this instance is outrageously incorrect.

I wouldnt.

Ive had people grab for my gun in streetfights when I was alone, and I was able to get them into custody without the weapon ever being drawn.

There were multiple officers present. There was no need for deadly force here.

In addition, the complacency of the officer whose gun is grabbed is incredibly frustrating.

I just watched this the other night.

Though you can clearly see the dude grab the officers gun, there were at least 3 of them in that room. I cant see any reason why, unless the officers gun was already out of the holster (which I highly doubt), youd have to use deadly force here.

If the sign is someone elses property, its the victims choice in whether charges are brought on that count. However, I take serious issue with the officer noting the intimidating smirk in the report or charging documents.

Real fucking unnecessary and stupid.

No, not just because of that. However, it's a factor. And I'm not claiming I magically come out on top in all possible scenarios, but I like my chances.

They won't. It doesn't happen like that here. It's so incredibly rare I may as well.worry about getting struck lightning.

Here, you're mostly talking about ketamine and heroin users. Anybody likely to break in as a result of drug use is unlikely to be on them at the time, but in withdrawal. When I served as a police officer, I often had to deal with people like that physically. They really aren't much of a threat if you know what you're doing. People who aren't junkies are a much more serious threat.

What country are you in, for a better reference point on where youre speaking from?

This is not a point of dispute. Most, if not all police shooting incidents that receive controversy are incidents where someone died when they weren't presenting themselves as a threat

It is a point of dispute, though. You can see from the shooting in Columbus. A vocal segment of the population right now thinks lethal force should never be used.

I dont know you well enough to say if thats your view, and Im not going to assume you believe one way or the other.

The pendulum is swinging too far the other way, when what we need are people with good sense to make proper case-by-case rulings on these incidents.

There are too many factors to be all in one way or the other.

Im just trying to find a way forward for all of us, and keep people safe from both criminals and those whove duped departments and cities well enough to have a badge pinned to their chest despite their clear short comings.

We need to do better. So, so much better.

Could you point me to the crime Breonna Taylor committed the night she was killed?

Bootlicker, go get pegged by your gods in blue.

While I know this isnt going to be a good faith discourse, Ill engage anyway.

Breonna Taylor didnt commit any crime the night that she was killed; that is correct. She was close enough to a criminal drug enterprise, however, that a judge felt compelled to sign a search warrant for her apartment. In the legal service of that warrant, Taylors boyfriend shot at police. More than likely, police didnt knock and announce, though Im fairly sure it was a no-knock warrant. Regardless, Taylor was killed in the ensuing conflict.

Taylors death is a tragedy. She didnt deserve to be arrested, let alone killed, but by no means was it the outright execution people have been making it out to be.

In any case, this is a disingenuous topic.

There are terrible shootings, illegal uses of force, and criminal police officers; these are unarguable points. There are also a criminals who refuse to submit to the rule of law, fight the police, shoot at the police, and willfully and wantonly commit violence against other citizens.

Some of those people will die in a confrontation with police; this, too, is unarguable. It is also unavoidable.

We should absolutely strive to eliminate the harm to or the deaths of anyone when it is not absolutely necessary. Taylor should not have died. Castille should not have died. Floyd should not have died. Wright should not have died.

But on the same note, society must come to grips with the fact that until you divert those criminal pathways, it must come to grips with the fact that people will die at the hands of police.

People accept that police will die in the line of duty. Thats the choice police made.

People need to accept that those who try to kill, maim, or harm others will also die on occasion.

Call out the bad shootings, call out the bad cops. Prosecute them.

But stop condemning every use of force. Force is a necessary tool of the job, at all levels. Not everyone respects words.

1 shots. Not Good enough?

In general, if there WERE a legitimate threat, no.

One round, unless in the absolute perfect spot, typically wont stop a motivated threat. I dont know if you saw the video of the recent shooting in the hospital (cant remember where it was), but that guy took a round or two early on and continued to be a threat and then opened fire on officers again.

I get the idea that one should be enough; I can understand why youd think that way.

Typically, it isnt.

But this is a bad shoot regardless.

Having only read the first two pages of this topic, I can only get the impression that some of these people have absolutely unreasonable expectations for what cops should be capable of, what constitutes self defense, and will condemn any lethal altercation a cop has with a black person, regardless of whether or not it was justified.

I like to think most people can see a situation like what happened to George Floyd and acknowledge that it was an unjustifiable use of force against him, while also looking at this situation and acknowledging the lethal force was justifiable.

Reason, at last.
