Let's say you can buy the high jump boots at an early shop for a high price but you can also get them for free way further along in the game. Might be a cool way to sequence break, provided you've found enough money early.

Legacy of the Wizard does this - every item can be found for free, but they're rather hard to find. All can be purchased, too.

Minus the shield, crowns, and Dragonslayer, you are correct sir.

The Crowns and Dragonslayer don't count... they're the goal of the game. That'd be like if you could just buy the Triforce (*coughwindwakercough*)...

However, the Shield can be found.. it just requires several items to get to it.

The only problem with 12's battle system is sometimes the effects queue fills up so fast the game has to idle for a while.. doesn't really become a problem until endgame where something like Yiazmat will cast a spell and your guys will just sit there until the animation is complete.

La-Mulana is way too cryptic though. I don't want to make a game where it was to have a link to a wiki or google from the main menu.

Well, the only thing I'd call TOO cryptic, at least in the remake, is the final Mantras puzzle - since it doesn't make contextual sense.

what about metroid he's a pretty good metroidvania

Metroid is good about the exploration, but it's really ------ take off ur nostalgia goggles, Metroid 1 is dumb. You can dig a hole in the floor and go 20 rooms and find a missile tank... woooo.

Metroid 2 had a more linear design in that it's sorta stage based, but it's a better Metroidvania. The exploration makes sense, it furthers the plot (killing metroids), and each zone is a nice well thought out adventure.

Some games, particularly on the Gameboy, will just pull map data out of the next available RAM address and fill your screen with garbage (Mario Land 2 does this)

It depends on the game. Sometimes there can be a distant hit box, or you could literally collide with the skybox renderer, sometimes it's co-ordinate based and you can get to -32bit/+32bit integers in distance... lots of options.

Some just outright crash
