I lost a dog once.PSA for anyone who is not aware of Does the Dog Die, an online catalog of films/TV/books with a list of mostly spoiler-free info surrounding the various upsetting things that could happen in a film [drug use, suicide, vomiting, needles, childbirth, to name a few]. This info is provided by users, they will say that things happened [e.g. 'a character is stabbed'] but won't use their name and will provide extra info you might need ['...you see the knife enter, but no blood is seen' or 'blood splatters the wall but the aftermath is offscreen'] I use it all the time bc I can't handle live-action blood/gore. --- I am offend. However, much like a train wreck, you can't look away. Contemporary readers and critics found it compelling if troubling, yet it's much more appreciated today. The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton, 1920: high society drama and interpersonal scandal in the late 19th century, this takes you to a world that no longer exists, shattered by WWI. The constant struggle between pleasure and morality, old and new, tugs at you throughout the book. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1850: one of the first mass-produced books in the US, it inspired the film Easy A [2010]. For fans of A Christmas Carol who didn't care for the supernatural elements. Pro tip: if they bring up a book you've never heard of in a film, and it's clearly an attempt to legitimize the film by name-dropping the book... drop the film instead and go read the book. e.g., it goes without saying that Wuthering Heights [like many works] is far superior to Twilight, and supposedly it's Bella Swan's 'favorite book'. I wonder if a little life experience helps in the appreciation of Surface Pressure? WDTAB is so catchy, and Surface Pressure has a strong solo performance and lots of range too. Bizarre to learn that Maribel is supposed to be the youngest child. Isabela reminds me of a youngest, but she's supposed to be the eldest. Luisa is the middle child, which makes sense but she's at least appreciated for what she can do, unlike Maribel. I don't have any siblings, so I'm just going off of birth order stereotypes. I don't have a problem with that. There's a wide variety of parenting styles. You do what you wanna do. I grew up with my dog from 1996-2012. I didn't feel like she was a sibling [only child here], she was 'part of the family' but also very much expected to behave in a certain way. We were a no-dog-on-furniture household and received positive comments from people who were uncomfortable with dogs. I firmly believe that you can enjoy your dog best if other people can enjoy them, too - and that involves training and limits. There's quite a gulf between 'let the dog do whatever it wants and insist other people find it endearing' and 'feed it and leave it outside to guard your house' [which can be abusive and expose your dog to many dangers]. --- Are you watching closely? |

Biggest red flag in my experience is when someone says they're a dog parent instead of saying, "I own a dog" or "I'm a dog owner" or even "I'm a dog person/dog lover". It's shorthand that translates to "I love my dog more than most people, and will do nothing to improve other people's experience with my dog, because my dog can do no wrong". --- Are you watching closely? |
