It might be the first time that a NN character has lost the lead outside of the first few minutes of a match.

Ryu actually had a lead on Sonic in 2004 up until 2:30 into the match, but the lead never got past 60.

That's the match everyone forgets about because of how much Sonic beasted with the Europe and day vote.

We actually haven't had a Mario same-series match 1-on-1 since 2004, now that I think about it, and we had several in 2003 and 2004 (Mario/Bowser, Bowser/Yoshi, and Luigi/Yoshi).

Oh wait, I take this back. We had Peach/Daisy in 2006 (LOL), but that barely counts.

Speaking of which, I kind of hope Cloud/Sonic 2003 is on here somewhere but it's probably not because I think it might be too high at this point.

But I think that was the first time people really thought Link could lose, and seeing a Noble Niner get doubled without SFF being involved is still legitimately stunning.

Eh, Ryu would have had to drop a decent bit for that to happen. 2010 Cloud only got 66% on him.

Was there actually ever a time that Tifa looked weak? I sort of suspect that she was always this strong

I've been a big believer in Tifa from the start. I was one of the people who pushed for her to get in back in 2005 because I thought there was no way she'd be weaker than Aerith. She's never really had a "bad" loss, honestly.

Yeah, the fact that we've still never gotten Mario vs. Sonic is kind of baffling. I mean, it's hard to believe it'd be in any way compelling at this point, but yeah.

Mario/Sonic was the one thing that could've saved RR, too.

Not an official match...!

Although Red/Blue > Samus/Ridley or Ryu/Ken with 60% each is probably the standout result from that contest because even if you had them going far, you didn't expect THAT.

Yeah, I think Draven/MMX/Ryu is the biggest Draven match because we've never seen anything like that before.

Undertale/ME3 is huge because of the enormity of the comeback and just the feeling that many had that it was all over.

someone should make a list of the top 25 most insignificant matches in contest history

And every actual match from Rivalry Rumble

it's a fitting commentary on RR that the only noteworthy match in the entire contest was the bonus match

Cloud? Nah, this is a far cry from Cloud's best contest. It was just a pleasant surprise to see that he still has the strength to get to the finals because there was a lot of doubt after the Squirtle loss in 2013.

Tifa's always been the exception to the rule when it comes to FFVII. She even has different trends from the others!

I wasn't around in 2003, but wasn't there a pervasive theory going in that the villains of a game would be stronger than the protagonist?

Well, we certainly didn't have the mindset that the protagonist is most likely to be the strongest character back then. There were a lot of people who believed Magus > Crono and Luigi > Mario in 2003, for instance.
