The Osama Bin Laden has been pronounced nine times thing appears to have originated here:

http://www.corbettreport.com/osama-bin-laden-pronounced-dead-for-the-ninth-time/

There are a total of 10 "death pronouncements" listed including Obama's. Five of those are just people saying "I think, based on evidence and logic" that Osama Bin Laden is dead, one is Harry Reid saying someone told him Osama might have died in an earthquake, and one is Obama, leaving only three other "death pronouncements."

One is Fox News reporting on a report in a Pakistani newspaper, one is a leaked French document about an uncorroborated Saudi report, and the other is Benazir Bhutto making an offhand comment in an interview with David Frost (who randomly does not follow up on her claims. Or the videos all cut off before that point.) Some of these reports contradict each other, and none appear to have been researched or corroborated in any serious way. If you want to be doubtful of the government's line that's good, but there's no reason to give any of these other sources credence either.

Edit:

The Benzair Bhutto quote is also presumably a misstatement as she discusses Osama Bin Laden being alive in this interview conducted after the Frost one:

Joking aside, of course they do. When Nintendo creates a game like Ocarina of Time, they are creating value out of thin air. When you write a book, you are creating value out of thin air.

You don't make the money by making the game though, you make the money by selling it.

TopicIf you were like a contest historian, how would you define "ages"?
LOLContests
01/04/12 9:12:00 PM
#10
Pre-Classical Era (Mario/Servbot to Jill//Link): This was the early days of the contests when they were a GameFAQS only thing, and we had no idea what would happen or what to expect from them.

Classical Era (Sonic/Samus to Final Fantasy VII/Suikoden II): The contests were not just a GameFAQS thing, and votals expanded. We knew what to expect more, but we were not dominated by stats and patterns. This was the prime time for GameFAQS contests, in my opinion.

The Dark Ages (Pokemon G/S/C/Xenogears to Link vs. Sephiroth): The poll was moved down and votals dropped, interest died off at times during this period only to be revived during 2005.

Modern Era (Legend of Zelda/Civilization to 2007 Contest (no real specific match)): Votals exploded and people were really interested in the contests during this time. Lots of stuff was happening in the gaming world and there was the potential for changes in the contests.

Postmodern Era (2007 Contest to Sora and Riku/BJ and Hitler): The very concept of contests was subverted in this period with stuff like 4 ways and joke characters/4chan rallies, 12 hour matches, etc. etc. While we worked on perfecting certain aspects of contest analysis during this period, we also came to understand much more about how variable results can really be. I don't really have a starting point for this era. Either the first match of 2007, Mudkip/Bidoof's R2, or L-Block's R2/R3 would be good picks I guess.

Neoclassical Era (Mario and Bowser/Ike and the Black Knight): BJ and Hitler failed to bring in joke rallies, and a lot of conventional parts of contests seem to have returned, albeit in a much more boring manner.

Like a non-religious version that sees Jesus's teachings in the New Testament as good philosophical morals to live by, but not because he was the Son of God or anything. Seasons 1 +2 is a good start for Survivor. The two winners pretty much show the two main ways to win the game, and the two play styles of Survivor. Pretty crucial seasons. Other seasons that I think are important watches, either for quality reasons or because they say something about the game itself:

Marquesas
Amazon (Maybe. I've seen it described as a parody of Survivor almost, so not sure how good it would be without seeing all that came before.)
Pearl Islands
All-Stars
Vanuatu or Guatemala
Palau
Exile Island
Cook Islands or Fiji (Bad seasons, but are reflective of the way the game has changed)
Micronesia
Samoa + Heroes Vs. Villans (Bad editing, but at least tell an interesting story about playing Survivor.

Season 2 for Big Brother. The first "proper" season, and still the best

TopicNintendo officially releases its Zelda timeline
LOLContests
12/21/11 7:48:00 PM
#223
Originally, I was going to say that Link going back in time as an adult in OoT is a red herring since anything could create a scenario in which Link fails, but I think I might have come up with a better way to explain things instead.

A) There are two types of time to think about here. "Hyrule" time, and "Link" time. In a traditional time travel story, you generally deal with "Hyrule" time. This is the timeline for an entire universe. One timeline with various pasts/presents/futures to visit.

B) "Link" time is someone's *personal* timeline, and can exist in multiple "Hyrule" times if someone is traveling between them. At the end of OoT, Zelda sends Link back in time to when he was a child, but this is in terms of "Link" time. She simply rewinds his "personal" time if that makes any sense. The timeline which Ocarina (almost entirely) takes place in, remains intact. This rewinding does create a separate "Hyrule" timeline.

C) Now there's nothing in OoT to imply that Link going back as an adult is time travel in a universal or personal sense, but if it is in terms of "Link" time, it would explain how a new timeline is created. However, this does produce questions. If it is travel along "Link" time, then why isn't Link frozen in time when he returns to the moment he pulls the Master Sword? And is it even possible to move forward in "Link" time this way? Questions, but not unanswerable ones.

Why does changing some things create a new future and changing other things doesn't?

Well, in theory there's a different timeline for every decision we make, but that's a non sequitur in regards to Link traveling back and forth to child/adult There's nothing in the game to imply he enters a new timeline, and it's not necessary to explaining why a separate one exists.

The Left Timeline still doesn't make sense to me. Link doesn't go to a "new" future after the getting the Lens of Truth/does part of the Spirit Temple. He just goes back to the one he just left, which is the one that's supposed to make up the Left Timeline. The stuff he did the first time like getting Epona/beating the Forest/Fire Temples is still done. The timeline he travels on throughout the entire game is ostensibly the same one. The split happens at the very end when Zelda sends him back to the way things "should have" been.

Thats a total exaggeration. The FF series does well in Europe but it's hardly a juggernaut. FFIX lost ground to Phoenix Wright and FFX to Viewtiful Joe for gods sake. >_>

I agree with this. I looked at results from this contest and in Cloud/Seph Vs. Kratos/Zeus the regional difference weren't that extreme, while Link did noticeably better in America in all of his matches. If anyone has extreme Geolocation results it's Link's American numbers.

What Bacon should do is just set up a schedule of contests in a five year cycle that can be repeated. If he has time to have little side contests, fine but otherwise don't worry about switching things up.

Year 1: Characters

this isn't OoT vs FFVII guys

this is the entire Zelda series vs FFVII

OoT and the entire series are probably both roughly equal, tbqh.

Edit: I'm not sure where this matter of factness about FFVII freefalling comes from. RPGS boosted a lot in popularity in the past year, and FFVII's playrate has been falling off at a lower rate than OoT's. This match today is the only thing to really imply anything other than a minor drop.
