That's quite a bit of stuff, thank you. Will definitely save all this. Despite not having seen much mecha, I'm definitely interested in seeing more so this is pretty nice info to have. Out of what I have seen, my favorite so far was probably Turn A Gundam. In fact that's probably in my top 10 overall anime.
No problem! I'd like to think giant robots are my forte, so I'm always happy to (over)share my experience with them.
Turn A is really a special anime and for a lot of people it's either a love or (unfortunately) hate kinda thing. I'm glad you like it, cuz it's one of my favorites too. Tomino's next closest work would probably be Overman King Gainer, in terms of tone.
Patlabor did catch my eye a while back because I just happened to see the opening on YouTube, was indeed really catchy. Probably be a good place to start. Also not necessarily all mecha but the 80s aesthetic in general is really appealing to me (kind of how Zeta and ZZ looked/felt).
80s was one of the best decades for robots, no doubt. Besides Patlabor, Layzner, Dunbine and Gorg, Metal Armor Dragonar is a really good pick for that aesthetic; post-ZZ, intended to be a starter for a new Gundam-like franchise but ended up only being a single series. The opening is really tight too

And for the triple post, finished GaoGaiGar Final
Kinda weird to go from G-rated stuff to lots of fanservice and sexually charged scenes. Again it wasn't anything amazing but I did enjoy the two Betterman cameos, even if they were voiceless and from behind.

Glad to be done with it regardless.

Finished GGG.

Pros:
Mech design by Kunio Okawara
Character design by Takahiro Kimura
King J-Der and J were cool
Last fight was good

Cons:
Stock footage
Character deaths cheapened by fake outs (can't fake every death and then expect the viewer to feel anything when someone actually dies <_<)
Stock footage
Victories cheapened by ass pull abilities out of nowhere
Stock footage
Due to the fake outs and victories, there were neither stakes nor consequences
Stock footage
Weird music direction (hero's killer move featuring a sinister theme, opening rarely played etc etc)
Stock footage
Stagnant characters, no betrayals or counter purposes (which was on purpose, but with the above low stakes/no consequences, made for a very boring show)
That's about i-oh wait, did I mention stock footage? (At least half, hell maybe 2/3rds of the show was stock footage, is what I'm getting at)
And finally inconsistent themes/lifted ideas from anime that'd already done it, and better, three years earlier in 1994

Although the cons seem more than the pros, I've seen a lot worse and really the worst part was that I rarely felt emotion towards it, positive or negative. Good (mecha) anime should get the viewer's sides splitting, tears flowing or blood boiling. I laughed once, cried never and had lukewarm veins the entire time.

So in the end, GGG wasn't amazing or awful; it was just thoroughly average, at least for me. Hopefully Final is better <_<

Done with GGG through 25. First half was thoroughly middling, too much stock footage, too low stakes. Having the MC literally sacrificing his health and wellness to protect people is infinitely more interesting than "lol magic hammer," but gotta sell those toys I guess.

UX wasn't hitting so I'm moving towards BX. Long story short there's three series I need to see to fill out the list: GaoGaiGar, Raijin-Oh and Shin Mazinger. The high episode counts of the first two (49 and 51 respectively) are something of a hurdle to you know, actually playing the dang game...
But regardless, started em earlier today and what do you know, they're a great match (combination sequences and pollution/waste themed enemies).

As for what each did singularly, I thought Raijin-Oh had some smart animation regarding the "5th dimension" enemies (villain punches at the robot on his viewscreen and his fist appears, giant-size, to physically strike it; later he and his underling literally slip through the cracks of a wall and floor to get to Earth). GGG meanwhile had a really intense DE-combination sequence of all things, with the MC's life put at risk during what in 90% of mecha anime would be downtime.

So I'll try to rip through these over the next few days, pick up Shin Mazinger at the halfway point, and then finally play BX <_<.

THEN I'll be able to watch the next season of Symphogear, jeez

regret
To elaborate further:
PlotThe overarching story was very thin. More appropriately it was a series of situations, but unlike the usual mecha MotW or sci-fi police, the stakes were literally never lower. At no point did the heroes seem seriously threatened in battle or be subjected to a higher power; furthermore casulaties of war were essentially nil. Even with wanton destruction, laser beams firing, losing control of the robot etc etc, there would usually be panels afterwards where the speaker would say "fortunately there was only damage to this structure or that, everyone survived!" Keep in mind, this is despite the entire hook for the robots being that they need a pilot to kill...<_<
CharactersSo the characters. How did they grow or change as people without stakes? The answer is they didn't. Oh sure, the main kid went from being a jackass in the first three volumes to repeatedly, over and over and over, spouting off about how he was an ally of justice; but other than that, from volume one to volume 25, everyone was basically stagnant. There was no death of a friend, no seeking revenge, no personal goal or motivation other than to be poorly defined chess pieces on the main mastermind's board. They went about their business in seemingly nonsensical ways, never really caring for one another except at shoe-horned in talking moments, to confirm that yes the main kid was an ally of justice or yes every girl around him was still madly in love with him.
ArtworkTo wrap up, I'll say this section could be specified as character, battle or mecha, but I'll just cover them all under one blanket. The artwork was bad. Due to the odd shapes and lack of features on the mecha, the excessive use of speed lines and smoke clouds and the bland, featureless characters, the manga was for the most part, unpleasant to read. Certainly there was technical skill involved but none of it was applied to making the action clear, the mecha distinct, or the characters individual.
ConclusionI don't understand this manga. High handed idealism and a lack of death or consequence absolutely have no place in a story about giant robots, which by their very nature MUST result in some kind of casualty or trouble for the protagonists. Furthermore, for a story about saving humanity...they were already too late. Those folk ain't human cuz they had no spark or soul.
Anyway I'm beginning to regret my choice of game, lol

Red = watched
Blue = doesn't matter
Green = haven't seen

So having been awhile since I last played SRW, I've been thinking about having another go at one of em. The situation is that I'd like to play one I've seen most series of, as opposed to the usual recognize some series and situations, blunder through others.

UX, as seen above, has 17 series, 9 of which I've seen. We can knock that down to 9 of 15; Banpresto Originals are of course the main mechs/story of the game, and Fei-Yan is just a guest unit/plot irrelevant.

Another point to knock down is SD Gundam Sangokuden, since I've been through 3 Kingdoms enough times that I should recognize similar plotlines (not to mention the representing mobile suits).

So at 9/14, the remainder is Tobikage, Demonbane, Linebarrels, Dancouga Nova and Heroman. Tobikage I'll probably strike out since it's 49 episodes and I'd like to play this before autumn comes; similarly Heroman (anime) is 26, also unlikely.

On the other hand, Demonbane and Dancouga Nova are both 12 eps, and Linebarrels manga is 24 volumes. I think 12/14 will have to do.

Are any of the villains good iyo?
Definitely yes. Volume one had a nice power creep, with the first villain being relatively "street" level, if I remember the term right, and the final being a seemingly unstoppable force. I thought these two were the most engaging, of the six. That isn't to say the middle four were boring, but I enjoyed Batman's strategies against their powers and plans (especially the fifth villain) more than their actual characters, if you know what I mean.
I might read that.
Give it a shot if you feel like it! There's only three volumes and setting the story aside, the artwork has some of the cleanest lines I've ever seen.

TC I'm really sorry this happened. My dog was the exact same age and suddenly had nearly similar problems. I can't remember exactly how much time went between the first signs and his passing but it must have been months/nearing a year.
My only advice is to get some absorbent pads for if he has trouble walking or holding it in. On the same note, I'd also suggest a backup doggie bed.
You already sound like a considerate and caring friend so I doubt I need to say spend time with him and be patient with him.
