This could've scored excellent marks for its melody, but it does the thing Disney songs do much too often. It pauses the song right as it's getting good to have an annoying interlude of the hyenas being silly While I would have ranked this higher, I think you make a good point. The hyenas do disrupt the flow and dramatic buildup. |

As far as I know, the TV intros topic hasnt purged yet if anyone wants to discuss TV intros in there, but Ill cover this one here. I watched the first two (I cant get the third to work without a prompt to download something, which Id rather avoid), but I didnt have too much to say about them. They both strike me as intros that would have placed somewhere in the 4 to 5 score range (probably slightly below the top 50), with Xam'd placing a bit higher than Angel Beats. The animation and music, while good, strike me as about average to slightly above average using the (tough) scoring system I employed, and neither intro jumps out at me as that unique or with much apparent story standing on their own. Thats just a superficial evaluation because Im not doing the multiple watches and thorough write-up that heavily influenced my scoring, but its a fair guess. |

Hey Jesse, since I missed nominations for TV show intros, could you say where HDM's opening would have placed or roughly how it would have done in your rankings? This is an excellent intro! Its got a unique look with some great visual effects and a strong song, and I really like it. Id have to give it more thought to decide exactly how it would have scored, but I feel pretty sure this would have placed in the top 20. If anything might have held it back it would have been the Story factor, although there are definitely some elements to boost that score as well. |

I don't know if you'd consider the OP alone as part of the intro since it comes after another section I mean that cinematic sequence certainly is intended as an opening, but I dont know if it counts as an intro for purposes of this topic because it follows the segment with dialogue. Im defining an intro as something that comes before or immediately after starting a new game, the very first thing you see. But maybe this is an exception, I have to think about it. What I was trying to avoid was things like an early cutscene thats not an intro like the FFX nomination above. But this is presented like an intro. |

If theres an additional scene that plays after you start a new game, that would also count as an intro. Whether its part of the same intro or two separate intros is more debatable. Since theyre separated by the act of starting a new game, Id say they should be counted as two intros (meaning you could nominate both). RyoCaliente posted... Also ME 2 does give you control at the start, but it is only to basically walk from A to B. Would that one count? This is a tough question I knew would come up. My initial instinct was no, but Ive changed my mind. If its literally just walking down a hallway or something very simple and brief, I think it counts as an intro. And Raka has given me the perfect idea for a follow-up project, Video Game Intros. So first off, whats a video game intro? For purposes of this project, its not a sequence where you control a character. It should be a sequence you watch passively. And it probably goes without saying, but it should be the first thing you see after starting a new game (or a sequence appearing before you start), not 12 minutes into the game when the title screen finally appears. It also shouldnt be too long, generally no more than around four minutes, and it could be much shorter than that. Unlike my TV intro rankings, I will not be using a scoring system this time. My goal is to treat every intro as if Ive never played the game, and to rank each intro based on how much it would make me want to keep playing. You may nominate up to 4 intros, and Im planning to cap this at 100 entries (even though it always winds up being more). I just wouldnt want to have to rank a sequence that gets to be more than around 3-4 minutes. I think if I did a game intros ranking, I might not bother with scoring factors. For one thing, it would be tough to score the quality of the visuals given how much they change with technology over time. Also, its not really the job of a video game intro to sum up the story of the game, but just to serve as a compelling introduction that makes you want to keep playing. So I guess my criteria would be, treat the game as if Ive never played it, and then rank it based on how much the intro hooked me. |
