So in general, if you're pulled over while driving with reasonable cause, and a police officer asks for ID and registration, you are required to give that info to the police officer. An alternative is the officer looking up your information, either in their police cars or by bringing you down to the precinct to verify your identity and vehicle registration. However, if you're illegally pulled over, you are not required to show ID or registration.

In this case, this was a DUI checkpoint. Unfortunately, the US supreme court has found that DUI checkpoints are legal, and that a motorist must answer the basic questions and provide ID during said stop. Some states, however, passed specific laws to outlaw this; while others passed laws to make it legal under specific circumstances (e.g., must be done at night, must be advertised that there will be a DUI checkpoint, etc.).

So if this driver was in a state that made it illegal for a DUI checkpoint, he was full within his rights to refuse to answer and refuse to hand over his ID and registration. But all other states, the driver was wrong.

In the wake of the Chinese outcry over the two U.S. Navy aircraft carriers now cruising the South China Sea, it's easy to assume the carrier deployments are yet another needless and bellicose nationalistic chest thump from an administration infamous for blowing up longstanding arms controls treaties and undermining key alliances.

But that would be wrong. In fact, they laudibly uphold the U.S. commitment to defend the common global good of entitling all countries the freedom to navigate the seas. The patrol missions are a rare case in which international law, defense of weaker nations and pursuit of the national interest are aligned.

These patrols involve U.S. military ships deliberately cruising through waters that China has claimed jurisdiction over to make the point that they are not, legally, under Beijing's exclusive control.

At issue is a simple, widely accepted principle of the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea: that international waters extend no further than 12 nautical miles (13.8 miles) from a country's shore.

But the Chinese Communist Party doesn't think that principle should apply to the South China Sea, a body of water boxed in among southern China, Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia through which over one-fifth of the world's trade passes every year. Beijing makes sweeping but ill-defined claims to waters more than 1,000 miles beyond its territory, as can be seen in the map China submitted for international arbitration. (China lost the case in 2016 but had vowed beforehand that it wouldn't abide by the court's ruling.)

China's maritime militias ostensibly civilian boats under government control are being used to hound commercial and military shipping of nations that dare to traverse the South China Sea. And the Chinese military has used this claim to justify harassment of U.S. ships and aircraft, including unsafe intercepts by Chinese jets and the flashing of damaging lasers into the eyes of U.S. military pilots. The two-carrier patrol the first in the South China Sea in six years overlapped briefly with large-scale Chinese naval exercises near the disputed Paracel Islands, and it was met with bellicose threats in China's Global Times that the carriers could be sunk by China's "aircraft carrier killer" missiles.

U.S. policy is to conduct Navy patrols through these waters to challenge China's legally unsupported claims, preventing them from being enforced de facto. These freedom of navigation operations, therefore, uphold a principle in international law observed by virtually every other country, including the U.S. (though Republicans have prevented it from being formally ratified).

There's more than just international law at stake; China's expansionist claims come at the expense of countries with far less military and economic clout. The U.S. presence and patrols make it feasible for those countries to stand against Chinese pressure and defend their rights.

Are you implying that the taser put the cops life at immediate risk?
While a taser is a non-lethal weapon, I feel for the cop, because it all happened so fast. If Rolfe had the time to think it out logically, I don't think he would have shot Brooks in the back, but would have rather continued pursuit or let him go and go arrest him later (as they have all his info). It's just that all of this (struggle, Brooks overpowering both of them, Brooks reaching and taking the taser off the cop, running away, and pointing "a weapon" at the cop) happened in literally less than 10 seconds. I also don't think it was right that Brooks was shot in the back. This is just a shitty scenario for all of those involved.

Should Garrett Rolfe be charged with felony murder?

Donald Trump has defended the police officer who shot dead Rayshard Brooks in Atlanta, as a number of officers called in sick after their colleague was charged with murder.

Garrett Rolfe, a white officer, shot Brooks, who is black, twice in the back as Brooks pointed a police Taser stun gun in his direction while running away. Rolfe faces 11 charges over the killing.

Trump appeared on Fox News, where he defended Rolfe and appeared to criticize Brooks.

You cant resist a police officer, and if you have a disagreement, you have to take it up after the fact, Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity. It was out of control the whole situation was out of control.

Trump said police had been treated unfairly in the US.

He said: Its up to justice right now. Its going to be up to justice. I hope he [Rolfe] gets a fair shake, because police have not been treated fairly in our country. But again, you cant resist a police officer like that.

If youre yearning to plan a trip this year, but find that finances are tight after the pandemic, the U.S. tourism industry may just come to the rescue. Industry lobbyists in hotel, theme park, and other tourism sectors are lobbying for a plan that would provide travelers with $4,000 in tax breaks for their upcoming vacations.

According to Jason Garcia of the Orlando Sentinel, the plan already has received strong support from President Donald Trump. Of course, these subsidies would benefit hotel owners like himself, boosting revenue at a time when people are either wary of travel or see the new restrictions and guidelines as cumbersome.

Tori Emerson Barnes, a lobbyist for the U.S. Travel Association, whose members include the Walt Disney Co. and Comcast Corp.s Universal Parks & Resorts, spoke to the Sentinel on the current state of the travel industry:

Right now, our businesses need relief. But ultimately, well need recovery.

With increased travel to theme parks, workers unions are also fighting to preserve the safety of front-line employees, with new conditions that include better job security, wages, and paid sick time, according to Wendi Walsh of UNITE HERE, which represents thousands of Cast Members at Walt Disney World.

We really need to move from incentives to requirements to get these companies to do the right things.

Orlando was one of the hardest-hit cities in Florida with the shutdown of the theme parks due to COVID-19. The unemployment rate in metro Orlando was 16.2% in April, with a number of theme park employees struggling with the overburdened unemployment benefits system.

As for the Explore America tax credit, lobbyists are still working alongside Congress officials and the Trump administration on the details of the plan, possibly capping the credit at $4,000 per household for travel expenses through the end of 2021.
