And it looked like it might work because the rally topic was taken down on the LoL reddit, but then they put it back up with a sticky and the very next update was Draven just absolutely stomping on Snake's throat and the match was immediately over at that point.

I was reading through the old CBIX Stat Topics (because I had somehow lost the trend charts for that contest and cn's site was down and had been down for a while), and I had totally forgotten that somebody lied to the Subreddit admin that B8 had deliberately created and mass downvoted a rally topic so it wouldn't appear high on the Subreddit (since you could only have one rally topic at a time). The admin believed him and pinned the rally topic to the top. I think Draven had like a 1200 vote update on the very next update and we all knew it was sadly over.

Wasn't this Smurf? IIRC, he posted (under an alt) on Board 8 that he had created the current rally topic on the subreddit, and that he was planning to delete his post shortly, which would cause the rally to collapse and have to start over. It was a lie (the person who had made the topic came forward) but the B8 post was brought to the subreddit's attention, and they stickied the topic. What a traitor.

The copyright extension act that expires at the end of this year means that everything from 1923 that's not already public domain will become so, no questions asked. I don't believe there's any way for something to leave public domain once it has entered, short of technicalities like It's A Wonderful Life, and that was not a chronological expiration issue.

One of the best touches George Romero had in his AIM interview after Kefka/Vercetti was claiming to have stuffed *against* Starcraft in all of its matches, but that there had been an even more powerful force stuffing for it instead.

Speaking of Undertale, I side with red sox that it could have lost. I know that the stats Bacon provided said that the Twitter account was the source of most of the rallied votes, but I think that might be a technicality regarding how refferrals are recorded.

I've mentioned this before, but there was one Tumblr account that was key to all of this. I don't remember it's name, but it was a fairly generic looking Tumblr that mostly created user requested Pokemon sprites for people. Its reach was so large, that whenever this Tumblr reposted something about the contest, the amount of overall reposts on Tumblr would surge, and Undertale would start slicing off votes again. Once I figured out how much traffic it was causing, I started monitoring this Tumblr, and Undertale's surges were very much tied to it. Whenever Undertale started lagging, the person would repost about the contest again, and the surges would restart. If this one person went on vacation or something, I'm not sure Undertale could have won. I thought that Pokemon might have had a shot considering the subject of the Tumblr, but I guess not.

the Nintendo boost happened. once that happened, everything mature kinda went out the door.

That would make sense but more mature, casual friendly entrants were doing fine in contests up to 2009/2010. Vercetti's collapse and Master Chief's boost is literally the same match.

What happened to GTA? Yes, it's "not a GameFAQS series", but as was just pointed out, Vice City WAS very strong in 2004, and Vercetti, while overrated by casuals was a decent midcarder as well. Even CJ was probably above the fodder line in 2005. Then all of a sudden GTA blows its match to Warcraft in the Series Contest, and it's been all downhill from there. This happened well before the site's votals dropped off, and it's not like it reflects overall trends in the gaming community.

Samus/Tifa 2006's biggest influence was finally proving that pics mattered. The dominant view amongst the contest cognescenti at the time was that, outside of obvious jokes like Duke Milkem or Snake/Sora, pictures did not make a difference. Voters were not so stupid or so fickle as to not recognize or to not vote for someone based on their picture, especially someone at N9 level.

Even Solid S*** was explained away. Oh Frog was being bandwagoned, Bowser really was that strong, etc. etc. We'd even had Snake/Yoshi just four days earlier which seemed to drive the point home, when Snake performed about as expected based on his 2005 numbers, the picture making no difference, or so we thought.

Samus almost blowing the match was what finally laid that to rest for good.

I'm intrigued by the concept of all-fictional characters, but only in relation to each other. I don't really have any interest in seeing them go up against our usual crew though, except maybe as a bonus match at the end. I know that's not really the popular consensus, but *shrug.*

I think people are overrating this female factor a bit. Samus and Tifa have had impressive performances in SFF matches, sure, but overall they don't look any stronger than in years past. "Edgy" characters have dropped off, so it's creating an optical illusion of rising strength amongst the FF women, for example.

Zelda has gotten a legit boost, but she was worth 45% on Snake back in 2005, and I think that having a more prominent role in a super acclaimed Zelda game should be enough to overcome that*, without needing anything else factored in.

*Assuming that Snake is back at those levels.

Do you sleep still? Wait! Do not be so hasty, boy... I can see this
girl's dreams... Oceans... Oceans... Oceans... Oceans... Oceans as far as the eye can see. They are vast seas... None can swim across them... They yield no fish to catch... What did the King of Hyrule say? ...That the gods sealed Hyrule away? And they left behind people who would one day awaken Hyrule?!

How ridiculous... So many pathetic creatures, scattered across a
handful of islands, drifting on this sea like fallen leaves on a forgotten
pool... What they can possibly hope to achieve? Don't you see? All of you... Your gods destroyed you! I have been waiting for you, boy. For one like you... Yes... For the hero.

When the sun rose into the sky, a burning wind punished my lands, searing the world. And when the moon climbed into the dark of night, a frigid gale pierced our homes. No matter when it came, the wind carried the same thing... Death. But the winds that blew across the green fields of Hyrule brought something other than suffering and ruin. I coveted that wind, I suppose. It can only be called fate. ...That here. I would again gather the three with the crests. ...That I should lay my hand on that which grants the wishes of the beholder... That when power, wisdom, and courage come together, the gods would have no choice but to come down... The power of the gods... The Triforce! He who touches it will have whatever he desires granted! Already, the crest of wisdom is mine... All that remains...

Just to be clear, aren't the Peru stuffer and the VPN stuffer different issues? I think people are mistakenly conflating them. The possible VPN stuffer was brought up fairly early (Monika Vs. Wario maybe) and the Peru thing is from Draven's match.

Not sure that Peru's results in this last match really point to anything though. 86.36% seems like a low number for a stuffing inflected result. Cirno's number when she was caught for example was 99.95 or something like that. Peru has to have a low enough voting base that even tens of MMX votes should be throwing things off by more.
