TopicHoly S***! Web Site Number 9's archives are back!

Web Site Number 9 was the main archive/center for MSTings in the late 90's/early 2000's. For anyone not in the know, MSTings were basically online text based versions of Mystery Science Theater 3000 where people would riff on fanfiction/rants/other stuff they found online.

In the spring/early summer of 2003, the site went down temporarily while the servers were moved. That brief move turned out to last over a decade, and for 17 years the site's archives were gone, with the site's admin MIA as well, with no word as to what happened. Most of the MSTings had been posted elsewhere and were easily recoverable, but some were gone forever, and since the community/practice had become centered around the web site the MSTing community completely collapsed.

Fast forward to an hour ago, when, for the fun of it, I decide to google an old email address of mine, just to see if any record of it remained on the web. Surprisingly, I find a link to the .txt file of an old MSTing of mine, something which I probably hadn't laid eyes on in 15 years. This leads me to discover that the old domain for WS#9 is active again, with what appears to be a directory hosting .txt files of all the MStings that were on the site when it went down in 2003.

It's not the whole site, and some of the files are hard to read on modern browsers, but this is just crazy to me. It's been 17 years, and I thought that I would never see some of this again. I don't know if this is a glitch in the matrix, or a planned reboot of the site, but the MSTing community was my first online community, and there was always a sense of emptiness for me with how it all ended. I know that they say you can't go home again, but it seems like in this one fraction of a percentage, I might.

Edit: Oh duh, if anyone else is interested, these are at: http://www.mistings.org/mistings/

Well, President Trump seems like he's pretty close to giving up and surrendering to coronavirus. If we end up opening everything and going for herd immunity anyway, then Sephy may have a claim that the quarantine was ineffective and wasted 2 months and trillions of dollars of wealth.

Quarantining without a proper reopening strategy, both in theory and in practice, is definetly ineffective and wasteful, although I'm sure there'll be a variety if opinions as to how that came to be so.

Forgive me for what might be a stupid question, but how are antibody tests going to work logistically unless there's enough for everyone? Say I take one and it shows that I am recovered now, but previously had COVID-19. That's great, but for all I know I was contagious up until last week, so I would have to tell my landlords, who I live above, and they would need to get tested too, since they could be weeks away from developing serious symptoms. And then if they get the same result, they would have to reach out to anyone they might have been in contact with. If I worked at an essential business, even in a very limited fashion, over the last several weeks, then everyone there would have to get tested as well, and so on and so forth. I just don't see any way that this doesn't end up spilling over capacity.

Even based on the NY pregnant women numbers you wont have much of a herd immunity effect. Even if its actually the case that like 13% of people in NYC have it (based on that study) instead of 3%, you still have an R_effective thats .87 as high. Thats not totally negligible, but thats in the hardest hit city in the country. In other places then (under this assumption) you might actually have 2% with immunity instead of the .5% you detected or something; thats not gonna help you too much until things get much worse.

The real advantage of this is true is that it makes the worst case scenario better. It wont be that relevant if were successful.

That's fair, however, the ~16% of pregnant women who tested positive in the study only refers to those who were currently infected. It doesn't take into account anyone who might have previously contracted it and recovered, or the (most likely smaller) number who will contract it in the next several weeks before quarantine measures are lifted.

In regards to COVID spreading more than previously thought:

Ilive in Union City, NJ right across the river from Manhattan, and since I'm signed up for safety alert calls, I've been receiving regular messages from our mayor regarding COVID-19. The most recent one said that in a town of 60,000 people, there have already been 1,100 positive cases. A testing center did just open in town last week, so that might be boosting numbers somewhat, but that seems very high to me considering how many asymptomatic cases there are, or even symptomatic cases that don't/didn't get tested. I don't think it's unreasonable to think that when everything is said and down at least 25-33% of the entire city had/will have had COVID. Who knows what it is like elsewhere, especially in NYC.

Either way how do you even pretend to enforce this? Seems like a recommendation more than anything else

There's also probably a sense that if you give someone an inch they'll take a mile. Is it fine for 3-4 friends with no symptoms to walk through a park together? Probably, but people will push up against whatever you give them, so you might as well go as harsh as you can, even if you don't plan on enforcing it.

Problem is that they ran a study and to keep the curve low enough for the medical to handle, and this is assuming perfect distribution that it would take 10 years of lockdowns. Now I get your hoping for a best case scenario of a vaccine after 18 months, but still that's like 2 years of lockdowns.

Is that feasible? We would have like 50% unemployment and everyone would lose their homes and such at that point.

I know that medical in the region isn't able to handle things yet, but didn't Lodi province in Italy see the curve start to flatten two weeks after their lockdown went into place? Taking into account that there is a two week delay in reporting, that's a very promising result. It would imply that the effect of quarantining is almost immediate.

I'm not sure I buy the argument being made in some circles that Sanders does better on Tuesday because the coronavirus makes old people stay home. I'm sure that's true to an extent, but a young person's life is much more active and thus likely to be disrupted by the virus, which will cause then to prioritize other things than voting.

I think there's a non-negligible chance that Sanders drops out at the end of the debate anyway, so this might be a moot point.

That's what I thought at first, but New York has 320 delegates to 261 for Texas, and Texas has a much higher population these days (36 to 27 House seats).

I believe it is determined by the amount of votes that the Democratic candidate received in that state in the last Presidential election (and maybe some congressional/state races as well)

Realpolitik Talk: If Warren was planning to potentially release her delegates to vote for Bernie at a contested convention, wouldn't it make sense for her to stay in? I know that votes =/= delegates and not every delegate would do what she said, but in a scenario where she stays in and tells everyone to vote for Sanders at the convention 100% of her delegates would go to Sanders as opposed to if she dropped out now, where some primary voters will choose Biden, and give him extra delegates.

Well it's twofold:

* I want to hear Biden explain his positions now that he's the frontrunner.

* I want Warren to explain why she's still in.

It can be the last debate for all I care, I think enough has changed from the last one that we need to know.

Warren absolutely bodying Biden the way she did Bloomberg would be nice, but I'm not confident she would, or could.

Warren is "reassessing" her campaign, so she should be dropping out soon. That fundraising email that went out was probably just automatic. The other campaigns that bowed out had similar things happen.

Trump really isn't bad unless you're an illegal immigrant or part of the government bureaucracy. There's little question life has improved for virtually everyone else since Trump took office.

This is generally always the case for any country, to be fair. And I don't mean that as a perjorative against your comment. It brings up something to think about, and cuts both ways. Unless your country is in the middle of a civil war/massive civil unrest or a complete economic collapse, the average quality of life is almost always going to improve.

Can anyone explain how Buttigieg has made it this far? I just don't how "Barack Obama, but with less charisma, substance, and experience" would appeal to anyone, and yet somehow he's one of the top-tier candidates.

Buttigieg appeals to people who are proud to consider themselves "non-ideological."

They are clearly different people/candidates, but I actually see a lot of similarities between his campaign and Carter's in 1976. Both were excoriated by the left, and hated by their fellow candidates of all stripes, for saying a bunch of pablum that was lite on policy and had no real meaning, with Carter even saying stuff like "Our campaign is about love." Both were well liked by the media, and received attention even before their presidential runs, both blew up by "kind of" winning Iowa (None of the Above technically finished ahead of Carter), and both attempted to use their religion in an unconventional way for the time to speak of a New Morality. Pete is kind of the establishment version of the more populist campaign that Carter ran back then.

Monumental moment for Parasite!

I will concede to having a blisteringly Hot Take though. Is Parasite really the first foreign language film to win Best Picture? Does The Artist not qualify? It is a French movie, whose initial release in its country of origin features dialogue which is almost entirely in French (the French version has French intertitles, it's not just the English ones subtitled.) It's just that the dialogue is written out and not spoken. The version we got in America was, essentially, a dub, but due to the nature of the film the dub is essentially seamless, so no one watching it realizes that's what it was.*

But congrats to Parasite! Please don't mistake my being pedantic for a criticism. Although I was rooting for 1917.

*I'm not sure if the film was originally written in English, and then translated into French for the French release or not, to be fair. If it actually was, then ignore my point.
