Were people pissed at the manga version of the credits sequence which shows more war and another titan tree?

The manga initially didn't have that, it ends with Mikasa at the tree with a bird wrapping the scarf around her. The credits sequence is the 8 additional pages added to the final volume. Depending on who you ask, this actually made people more pissed lol. Especially because it confirmed that Mikasa ends up with Jean.

Your theory is wrong. I started with the Saiyan saga, like a lot of people. I like the Cell saga a lot because it pays off Gohan's character arc. His power was foreshadowed since the beginning of Z, but it was short lived and it never won him any fights. The Cell saga was the first (and really only) time where his hidden potential was capitalized on and he beat the big bad. Was a good passing of the torch.

Trunks is also a really cool character.

Hard mode is what made me truly appreciate the battle system of the game. It's balanced around the level cap (50), MP management becomes a lot more important, and weapon side grades have more impact.

There's a couple fights here and there that feel a bit annoying, but everything can be resolved by just getting better at the game or adjusting your materia. The block button goes a long way, and you'll want to play as your whole party so that they're always doing something and raising their ATB most of the time.

Three Houses is good. Has a really interesting setting, premise, and characters. Plays a bit like a mix of Fire Emblem and Persona, so it's pretty different from the rest of the franchise but that's not a bad thing (it just doesn't represent how other games play).

Engage is closer to the series roots in regard to it's game design. The story is kinda shit and the character design is polarizing, but the core gameplay is very fun. I like it a lot (but not as much as Three Houses as a whole).

If you have the Nintendo online option for GBA games, you can play the first localized game (Blazing Blade, simply titled "Fire Emblem" here). It's a great entry point as the entire first campaign (Lyn mode) is essentially a long tutorial that introduces series mechanics gradually. Practically everything you learn playing that game can be applied to anything else in the franchise.

Eh I get where he's coming from, a lot of people treat travelling as a checklist for places to exist in for a few days, as if that alone makes them an interesting person. If you're not legitimately interested in experiencing other parts of the world (or not strongly enough to devote time and money to it) you shouldn't feel pressured to do so.

That's fair, traveling isn't for everyone. That said, a lot of posts in this topic are commenting more on the ignorance of acting like it's all the same thing. Posts like this for example:

No, but all places on Earth are just other places on Earth. Yeah, they look different and smell different and have different people and food, but like...how different can one place be from any other place?

It's way different than one would expect. Experiencing other cultures can make you more aware of aspects of your own culture you take for granted.

The whole thing really comes across like someone saying they don't need to visit the pool because they can look up a picture online. There's a world of difference between that and actually swimming in it.

You are taking the best examples of Western games, and comparing them to the worst examples of Japanese games.

Both cultures create games with more intimate sex scenes that only occur after making significant strides in relationship with a character. Both cultures also create fanservicy smut. It really depends on the game, and I don't think it's fair to act like western games are generally more "mature" (while hand waving examples like God of War), and acting like Japanese games are only fanservice (when there's plenty of examples that run counter to that, like a ton of VNs).

VR is essentially a different genre of games, and not many developers know how to take advantage of the features VR offers to make something truly shine.

A lot of VR games remind me of Atari games, in the sense that they're pretty shallow and more of a proof of concept/tech demo than a fully fledged game. Many games are fully playable/functional without VR, and have VR added as a gimmicky after-thought rather than a focus.

Astrobot Rescue Mission is one of the few VR games to take advantage of the medium it's in, and it's an excellent game because of it. I highly recommend it if you have the chance, since it shows the potential of VR.

Beat that game a few weeks ago to settle a childhood grudge. Game is wack but it can be kinda fun. I had a fast forward option this time which makes the game significantly less tedious. I also took the time to learn a bit more about fusion, and I was able to make a Twin Headed Thunder Dragon deck pretty quickly.

Werent you also able to put in numbers at the bottom of real cards to get them in-game? Though I remember most of the good cards not working.

The good cards would work, they would just have an absurd price tag (999999) that's basically impossible to obtain legit. I didn't get much use out of the star chip system back in the day, but it turns out you can get some pretty useful stuff from it. Petite Dragon and the Dragon Scroll are cheap low-level dragons you can use as a baseline to fuse stronger dragons. Jirai Gumo is also pretty cheap, and there's a few other useful cards for a reasonable price.

One of the core aspects of pokemon as a series is training and trading. If you value your time enough to raise a pokemon for someone else then you're doing what the series was intended to do

That's one of the core aspects of Pokemon as a whole, yes. But it's not the core aspect of a Pokemon Battle tournament. Pokemon tournaments don't quiz your knowledge of the story, or check how many eggs you've hatched. It focuses in specifically on the battle aspect and tests your matchup knowledge. As long as the Pokemon you're battling against is legal in all areas, it doesn't make a difference how the Pokemon came into existence.

Sexypwnstar posted...
That's more of an issue with hackers/cheaters/botters/macroers flooding and devaluing the market

That's fair, but for a game like Pokemon, I think all that ultimately does is lower the barrier of entry. If someone has level 100 Pokemon and they're playing against non-fully leveled Pokemon, they're most likely going to win. If both are level 100, then the one who is EV/IV trained is going to win. If both are at 100 and appropriately trained, that's when the depth of Pokemon's battle system starts to come out and knowledge/team composition becomes paramount.

Without genning or battle simulators, a lot of people would be stuck on the lower levels, not willing to put in the time to overcome the competitive entry barrier. At the highest level of play (like Worlds), EVERYONE is going to have a fully leveled/trained team, and it matters less how you obtained your team, and more how you use them.

One did everything under the guidelines TPC set and one didn't.

That is correct. The TPC is allowed to set and enforce the guidelines they want, and I even understand why they set the guidelines they did.

What I don't understand is why it's an issue to skip the raising and breeding process by generating Pokemon, but not an issue to skip the raising and breeding process by trading. If both Pokemon have legal movesets, stat lines and abilities, then it's a completely even playing field when it's time to actually battle.

My posts aren't addressing the TPC's tournament rules so much as addressing some of the short-sighted arguments in this topic.

Yes, and?

Please note I'm not asking why Nintendo banned sloppily generated Pokemon. I'm asking what difference it makes on a competitive level. As in, if I was a player in that tournament, what difference does it make if my opponent is using a generated team versus an opponent who is using borrowed Pokemon.

Because one person generated a pokemon out of thin air while the other had one that actually had effort put into it, if your example shift to someone paid money, then that's even more reason the genners is at an advantage

It had the effort of a 3rd party put into it, but not that of the competitor. In fact, I would actually argue the player going through the process of generating a Pokemon and putting it in their game is going through far more effort than the person who just traded to skip the process (regardless of money involved). The person who put in the most effort is the one who raised it, who isn't even battling and thus irrelevant to the scenario.

Because someone actually dedicated time to that pokemon and made sure it was legal. Someone had to understand how to build it to that specific need.

But again, from a COMPETITIVE standpoint, why does that matter? In this scenario, we're talking about two people who skipped the process of raising it themselves. One traded it from another player, and one generated it.

If being able to generate Pokemon is an unfair advantage, I don't understand why having money and connections also wouldn't be considered an unfair advantage.

No, because SOMEBODY still took that time, vs. hacking means nobody took the time at all. If you want to pay somebody for their time... Okay, that's on you. But when you just hack, literally nobody spent any time whatsoever.

From a competitive standpoint, why does this matter at all? Throughout this topic, you've been saying that if people don't want to put in the time, then don't enter. Why is it ok to skip the time sink process by paying money for someones team, but not ok through other means like generating a team?

If person A buys a set of Pokemon from someone, and person B generates a team through software, then this ultimately becomes a fair battle because the process by which the team is acquired doesn't matter when it's time to fight. The outcome will be determined by the usual factors (team composition, knowledge checks, etc.)

But if you ban acquiring Pokemon through generation, but approve of them being acquired through money, the tournement becomes less about who is the best Pokemon player and more about who has the most money.

I definitely understand why sloppily-genned Pokemon would be banned from an official tournament. The rule makes sense on a surface level, but I ultimately think it's pretty arbitrary.

When it comes to Pokemon battling, the core decisions people make involve figuring out a team, determining a moveset/item/usecase for each individual Pokemon, and executing the strategy properly. There are also knowledge checks of the opponents Pokemon/strategy which can influence important tactical decisions like switches. Match variance comes in the form of crits, accuracy, and certain status effects.

Raising and breeding Pokemon yourself isn't apart of any of that. If this was a metric that was actually measured in the tournament, traded Pokemon would be banned alongside generated ones.

CM_Ponch posted...
What genre do you think the competitive battling is in?

The point they're making is that in-game battling and competitive battling are essentially two different games. Competitive battling involves exploring/understanding the depths of Pokemon's battle system, while in-game fights can generally be steamrolled with an overleveled Pokemon. A fair amount of the competitive player base spends significantly more time theorycrafting and battling more than any other portion of the games. It's really not much different from the people in the FGC who skip the story mode to spend all their time in ranked or the lab.

I don't get that. Game just feels slow. Stage 4 is slow and repetitive and the boss is a slog, stage 5 is slow and the boss is an even worse slog. That's enough to ruin it for me.

If you started at 6 like I did, then PCB is a notable step up in some ways. First windows game to display your hitbox, first game Sakuya was playable in, and I think the OST is pretty great. Also introduced some noteworthy characters like the ghosts (Yuyuko and Youmu) as well as the entire Yakumo clan. Alice's return from pc98 is cool.

As a whole I like the Scarlet Devil cast and level design more than PCB, but I think 7 is more fun to play.

Yeah, think of Hard Mode as a post-game or NG+ mode. Hard mode is balanced around the max level (50) and you'll have access to your entire arsenal (all weapons with max upgrades, all your materia, etc.)

I personally really loved hard mode, as it made me truly appreciate the combat system of the game. Going through the entire game with my full kit was fun, and there's a lot of small extras you can unlock when going through the game a second time and making some different choices. The no bench healing change isn't as limiting as it sounds, it just requires the player to optimize a bit to account for it.

FF7R has some issues, but the combat system is a blast and I ended up thinking higher of the game after clearing hard mode.
