The Adventures of Elena Temple (Switch)

This was a fun short little adventure game where you go around to collect gems and coins to escape from the temple.

The game also has many different graphic filters that are based off of other consoles to match with the game's story on how The Adventures of Elena Temple was a "long lost forgotten classic". I liked using the lime green Game Boy filter.

I'm looking forward to playing the Definitive Version that's coming out next week. It looks to be a lot better than the original.

Shovel Knight: King of Cards (PS3)

While this may not be my favorite of the campaigns, I can appreciate all the effort that was put into it.
King Knight took a little getting used to, similar to how it took awhile to get the hang of Plague Knight and Specter Knight.
The more you play as him, the more you get used to his Shoulder Bash/Jump mechanic. There are some really good level design ideas in the later stages. Also some very good pixel art and music of course.

Joustus, the card game, is kinda alright. You place cards on a board and you push your cards with other cards to place on top of gems. The player with the most Gems wins after all the spaces on the board are occupied when all the cards take up the spaces. It's a totally optional mini game to play but it's also worth playing on the side.

I really like the ending as well.

Shovel Knight Showdown (PS3)

Beat the Story Mode.
A fun little Fighter/Platformer where you can play as various Shovel Knight characters.

Geki Yaba Runner is a neat little auto runner I played for a little while.

One Strike is amazing. It's like 2D Bushido Blade. You might also like it if you liked Dive Kick.

I can vouch for Mana Spark. It's a really good roguelike.

Garfield: Caught in the Act (Genesis)

This is a really good licensed Garfield game.
Nice graphics and animations.
You play as Garfield who gets trapped in a TV and he has to go through a bunch of themed stages (graveyard, pirate, B.C era, noir city and a pyramid) to escape the TV.

Brawl Brothers (SNES)

Replay via Switch.
Played co-op with a friend online. I was Kazan and he was Hack/Norton.

A very unique thing about this game is that there is a code you can put in to turn it into the Japanese version, Rushing Beat. Names are changed (Hack is called Norton in the Japanese version), one character has a different grab/pummel where he kicks the enemy in the crotch (Slash/Bild), the difficulty is easier and all the maze sections are not present in the Japanese version which they added in the American version. It's recommended you play this game in Japanese unless you want to deal with those awful maze sections.

Another neat thing about the game is the Angry/Ikari mode you can turn on in the Options that can grant you temporary invincibility and more powerful throws.

I liked this game when I was younger but on this most recent replay I forgot how annoying the enemies are when they grab you. You can supposedly break out of their holds by pressing the Y button quickly but it doesn't work and I think the manual lied about it unless I'm doing something wrong.

Biolab Wars (Switch)

This was a nice and short Contra clone.

Mana Spark (Switch)

I had this game sitting in my backlog for quite a long time and finally started it up.
Surprisingly it only took me 3 days to finish. When you keep at it, it gets a lot easier.
It was a very fun roguelike.

Fighter's History (SNES)

This was the fighting game where Capcom took Data East to court and lost when they accused Data East of Fighter's History being too similar to Street Fighter II.

The one feature that I liked about this game is that it had a weak point system where if you keep attacking your opponent in a certain spot (Mizoguchi's headband for example) they would get dizzy and were dealt double the damage afterward. I thought that was pretty innovative at the time.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Very charming game. This game really made Yoshi come into his own.
The graphics really stand out to this day, aiming with the eggs, the flutter jump, the transformations, getting 100 points on every level, the boss fights are fun stuff.

Solid game all around.

After learning how to do the Mockball, I was very happy with a new personal best and shaved off a good 25 minutes off of most of my previous times.
Getting the early Super Missiles, doing the Spore Spawn skip for the other Super Missiles and early Ice Beam was all very fun to do.

The Revenge of Shinobi (Genesis)

Replayed and beat it without the Infinite Shuriken (Kunai) trick for the first time.

Gotta love a game that features fights against Spider-Man/Batman/Rambo/Terminator/Godzilla rolled into one package.

Demon's Crest (SNES)

Replayed via Switch and got all 4 Endings.
This game is great. It's like playing a hybrid of Mega Man X mixed in with Super Metroid. Some game publications compared those games with this game and they were right.

Despite getting good reviews, it's a shame that a lot of people apparently returned the game more than when they bought it according to some stories. It just came out a bad time and didn't get much attention.

It's downright criminal this game didn't get the respect it deserved when it came out. A gem of a game. This series needs to come back to life and deserves a sequel.

Kirby's Avalanche (SNES)

Puyo Puyo Kirby Edition.
The most amusing thing about this game is Kirby's personality and how mean he is to his opponents with his trash talk.

Spanky's Quest (SNES)

I used to use save states during the Boss Rush super long ago when I discovered emulators.
I'm glad I finally beat this one legit with no save states this time around.

You play as a monkey named Spanky and you have to go through towers by finding keys while you fight against sentient fruit that came to life from the evil witch that trapped Spanky in said tower. There's also a boss fight at the end of each tower.

I like the mechanic on how you attack in this game. You get a magic ball you can bounce on your head and it has 4 power levels. You can use a Baseball, Soccerball, Volleyball and Basketball. Each with their own power properties. The magic ball can also be used to stun enemies and even retrieve keys for you/grab items. Spanky can also wear different hats that can slow his descent after a jump, grant temporary invincibility, not slip on ice, make the magic ball go to maximum power after one bounce and make the ball gravitate toward his head.

Game is very fun and has a great OST.

Refunct (Switch)

The game lived up it's description: "A peaceful, short first-person platformer about restoring a vibrant world."

Moving around felt really good. You can wall jump, slide, go in pipes, ride lifts and jump on springboards while you activate all the switches to restore the world around you.

I felt very relaxed when playing and the soundtrack was really nice and pleasant to listen to.
Makes for a good speedrun game and to go for personal bests.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Switch)

This was a very good remake.

The art style grew on me overtime. It has that whole "diorama thing come to life" type of thing. It gave the characters a lot more personality as well.

I like some of the quality of life things added like the Sword, Shield, Power Bracelet and Pegasus Shoes having their own buttons and that means you don't have to go into the menu too much.

I also liked they added a few new things and surprises to make it a fresh new experience for someone that is already familiar with the original.

The remixed OST is very nice. I like how in some of the tracks they mixed them in with the old 8-bit soundtracks as little callbacks.

If there was one thing that fell a little short to me, it was the Chamber Dungeons. It's nice you can make your own Dungeons except you've been through them before only you can go in a different order.
I almost want to think Nintendo did this as a small experiment if they ever get the idea to make a Zelda Dungeon Maker ala Mario Maker.

Overall, good remake is good.

Super Mario Kart (SNES)

Ancient replay via Switch.
Bowser's top speed felt great and using the Feather to use for shortcuts was too sweet.

Decap Attack (Genesis)

I finally spent the time to play this game all the way through. Used to play it off and on without giving it much of a chance beyond the first world.

You play as Chuck D. Head, a headless mummy created by Dr. Frank N. Stein who is sent to defeat Max D. Cap, a demon from the Underworld that is trying to conquer the surface world.

You can attack with a face from your torso and can jump on enemies. You can also collect a skull that can be be tossed and can come back to you. If you get hit you lose it though.
You can also slowly descend your jump. You can also some very useful potions and items to give you an advantage like using an earthquake (smart bomb), a shield, a projectile to use against bosses, freeze enemies, an item to make you run faster, jump higher and an item to make you reach farther and punch harder.

A few more things that are interesting is that this game is a re-skin of another game that was changed for Western audiences. In Japan, it's Magical Hat no Buttobi Tbo! Daibken

It also had a comic strip.
