General Album Comments

Seanchan: Things I learned on a first listen of Dizzy Up the Girl:

This has most of their big hits, with the exception of Name: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQOBUrRaPU0

The Goo Goo Dolls had been around for a decade before this album broke big.
They are still actively making albums today!
There's another singer in the band, who must be pissed none of his songs made the radio.
A lot of those "other singer" songs are really pop-punk sounding.
I went into this thinking, for the larger group of rankers, this might end up in that So Long Astoria tier of "fine but nothing special". Now, I don't think that'll necessarily be the case because the singles here are very strong, and they'll anchor this one further up. But it caught me completely off guard when Singer #2 had 4-5 songs on this album. Had NO idea!

Also, ever since this album got selected, I've had Broadway ear worming in my head, so nice to finally listen to it again for the first time in a long while.

StifledSilence: Its very fascinating seeing the work split between the two singers live. I didnt actually realize how much material of theirs he sang until I went to their concert as a teenager. Very sad he didnt get any singles though, I agree. I can understand why, since this albums singles are so strong. But they could have tossed him a bone after those ran their course at least.
(...)
What I expected: the singles to dominate my list

What I got: a very pleasant surprise of an album

This album came out while I was in middle school. I got it for the sake of spamming the singles and thats pretty much what I did with it. I listened to the whole thing once or twice back then and didnt think it was bad or anything. But my prevailing thought was why is the other dude singing? I softened my stance a bit when I saw them live a few years later, but it was still interesting to me how many tracks the other guy sang on. None of them ended up on the radio, which is both understandable and also a shame because theyre quite good.

Black Balloon and Iris took the top spots quite easily, as I expected. I would say those are the bands two best songs, and perhaps even two of the best songs of the 90s. But as I listened to the rest, I was surprised to see Slide and Broadway drop lower and lower. They are good songs, but I found myself really getting into the other material. This was especially true for the other guys stuff. Those songs added a nice variety to the album.

FoolFantastic: This is late-90s pop rock alright

MaxGalactica: Big fan of this album. I liked pretty much every song here. Iris and Black Balloon are both especially fantastic. Was a bit surprised by Robby Takac's vocals, but his songs weren't bad. Hard to beat Rzeznik's voice though.

HBJDubs: I don't think the other singer is very good. With that said, the top songs on the list are really great, Iris in particular being an all-time karaoke favorite

Seanchan (responding to FoolFantastic): A very succinct way of describing this album. It never becomes terrible but it does fall off fairly hard after the singles. And those singles got overplayed so hard back then that hearing them now, I was at first excited, then by the third listen I was like "okay, I'm good for another 20 years". Also, the "other" singer's songs just feel so out of place compared to the rest of the album.

This was one of my most anticipated albums after "Oblivion" from her previous album Visions ended up being an early contender (and ultimate winner) for my favorite song of the 2010s. There was a period of nervousness, though, as Grimes scrapped an entire album between the two. Luckily, what we ended up with is possibly the greatest electronic pop album ever recorded with so much range, from bangers like "Kill V. Maim" and "Venus Fly" to more relaxing tracks like "Realiti". It's a shame my favorite song here is what led her to meet Elon Musk (...through a Rococo Basilisk joke she made in the video that he happened to also tweet years later and then Googled if anyone else had done the same...) - at the time, this read as a personal, introspective work from one of the most promising new names in music.

my ranking:
Flesh without Blood
Realiti (...though I do prefer the demo version)
Kill V. Maim
Venus Fly
World Princess part II
California
SCREAM
Pin
Artangels
Easily
Butterfly
Belly of the Beat
laughing and not being normal
Life in the Vivid Dream

jcgamer107's week:
Kero Kero Bonito - Bonito Generation
vs.
Tally Hall - Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum
vs.
Elliott Smith - From a Basement on the Hill

Previous results can be seen here:
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks_Set_2
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks_Set_3

The rules:
1. Listen to the album in full
2. Rank every track on the album
3. For the results, there will be a curve at the top of each list; two additional points between #1 and #2, and one additional point for the next two ranks. This way, the songs that really stick out to someone get an edge that is not immediately negated by someone else putting it lower. In the case of Demon Days, someone's 15th track will get 1 point, 14th 2 points, 4th 12 points, 3rd 14 points, 2nd 16 points, and 1st 19 points. For albums with greater than 15 tracks, everything ranked below #15 will be given 0 points and the scale for the top 15 will be the same as a 15-track album. For albums with more than 20 tracks, you only have to list your top 15 (with 16-20, I still like having the average rank listed)
4. If you want to include comments for individual songs, I will compile them in the results
5. The results will be posted at the beginning of the next topic
6. The deadline to vote is Sunday, April 30 at 4:00 PM Central Time; the future week poll will close earlier, when I am putting up the next topic
7. You can sign up to be added to the user cycle (a new user will be added to the end of the current cycle as long as there are four weeks remaining) - the next person on the list will choose 3 albums which the other users will vote on for the next topic.
7a. To ensure people are being given an actual choice, the three nominated albums must be by different artists. You can otherwise stick to a similar sound or era.
7b. The tiebreaker for these polls will be whichever is listed first in the poll options - make sure to deliver the results in order of your own preference (which will hopefully have the added benefit of influencing people toward your first choice if they can't decide).
7c. I have added a tiered vote structure - the least popular album will be removed and its backup votes distributed to the other two entrants.
8. Starting with the next cycle, every four weeks will be a competitive week where those listed choose a single album to face off against others.
9. Skits and tracks under 40 seconds will be excluded from the rankings unless argued otherwise

Well, anything with an extended number of tracks, I can ask people to just submit their top 15. The main concern is length - I'm sure plenty of people here could list their top 15 FF7 tracks off the top of their head, but would they relisten to the entire thing to make sure? Should we even demand a full relisten in that case (...not that I would know otherwise)?

Seanchan posted...
@FoolFantastic

Over 2 years into this, has the whole Track and Album rankings met your expectations? What would you say has been the biggest surprise so far?

I know you've said you do something similar-ish in a more dedicated music community. What do you see as the main differences between here and there? Are there any albums or styles of music that are only popular in one place?

I've had a lot of fun with this; it's nice to feel like we made some sort of small album club. Also, despite having been visiting this board since the mid-2000s, I've always had difficulty keeping people straight with purely text-based communication, and this has been a good way of getting a better sense of individual users.

As far as surprises, I'm not sure - I'm happy it's lasted this long. Even if it never has a ton of participants, it fills a certain niche here.

Comparing the other forum, the other is on a website dedicated to a music critic consensus list, so the people who stick around there tend to have similar taste to critics. Which, the main difference there is metal; metal is huge here while it is largely overlooked there. Otherwise, I have heard nearly 80% of the albums we have covered beforehand, which I think means our tastes do largely line up with what critics consider important works. Both places certainly focus on pop and especially the various forms of rock, though the other forum shows greater appreciation for jazz, folk, and singer/songwriter types. I think both groups could do with more attention focused on hip hop and electronic - which, speaking of surprises, I thought we would be tackling a lot more electronic here. Maybe even a video game soundtrack - when are we gonna tackle Streets of Rage 2?

The Queen is Dead track ranking

10. Vicar in a Tutu (Track #8)
Score: 16 (Average Rank: 9/10)
Biggest Fan(s): Seanchan (#5)
Biggest Detractor(s): RyoCaliente, Raetsel_Lapin, Johnbobb, neonreaper (#10)

RyoCaliente: I like it more than before, but it's still my least favourite off the record.

9. Never Had No One Ever (Track #4)
Score: 30 (Average Rank: 7.25/10)
Biggest Fan(s): Raetsel_Lapin, HBJDubs (#4)
Biggest Detractor(s): MaxGalactica, Seanchan (#10)

RyoCaliente: Underrated, but I've always really liked this one. When you walk without ease, I love that opening line.

8. Frankly, Mr. Shankly (Track #2)
Score: 34 (Average Rank: 7.25/10)
Biggest Fan(s): Johnbobb (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): FoolFantastic, HBJDubs (#10)

RyoCaliente: Lots of lyrical fun here.

7. Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others (Track #10)
Score: 36 (Average Rank: 6.63/10)
Biggest Fan(s): RyoCaliente (#3)
Biggest Detractor(s): Raetsel_Lapin, Johnbobb, neonreaper (#9)

RyoCaliente: Growing up (and to this day still I suppose) I was always a Morrissey kid. I loved Marr's guitar playing, but in my mind I always more the vocalist, the frontman, putting himself on display for everyone. Morrissey sings well on Some Girls, but this is the one Smiths song (aside from the instrumentals) where he's almost completely superfluous to the song; Marr comes up with pure musical wizardry here. The guitar is just stupendous.

6. Cemetry Gates (Track #5)
Score: 51 (Average Rank: 5/10)
Biggest Fan(s): Seanchan (#2)
Biggest Detractor(s): RyoCaliente (#7)

RyoCaliente: I adore this track, but it's probably a bit simpler than the other ones rated above.

5. The Boy With the Thorn in His Side (Track #7)
Score: 55 (Average Rank: 4.75/10)
Biggest Fan(s): RyoCaliente, Johnbobb (#2)
Biggest Detractor(s): Seanchan (#8)

RyoCaliente: My favourite of the middle pop-songs. It's just got such a nice flow to it.

4. The Queen is Dead (Track #1)
Score: 61 (Average Rank: 4.5/10)
Biggest Fan(s): HBJDubs, neonreaper (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): Raetsel_Lapin (#8)

RyoCaliente: Maybe the best opener to an album ever. I love the ferociousness of the drums, I adore the lyrics, and I love the outro as well.

3. I Know It's Over (Track #3)
Score: 65 (Average Rank: 4.25/10)
Biggest Fan(s): RyoCaliente, MaxGalactica (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): Seanchan (#9)

RyoCaliente: A complete, bone-chilling breakdown, every single time.

2. Bigmouth Strikes Again (Track #6)
Score: 71 (Average Rank: 3.25/10)
Biggest Fan(s): FoolFantastic, Raetsel_Lapin, MaxGalactica (#2)
Biggest Detractor(s): RyoCaliente (#6)

RyoCaliente: I honestly probably like Cemetry Gates more; I've just overplayed Bigmouth over the years that it has dulled my appreciation for it. But for this ranking I did try to really listen to the track, and the complexity of the guitar and other instruments just make it that I really can't put it any lower than this.

1. There is a Light That Never Goes Out (Track #9)
Score: 77 (Average Rank: 3.13/10)
Biggest Fan(s): FoolFantastic, Raetsel_Lapin, Seanchan (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): MaxGalactica (#8)

RyoCaliente: THE track. This is one of the first songs I really actively listened to, probably the oldest track that I heard that I still listen to. Will always have a special place in my heart.

General Album Comments

FoolFantastic: It's unfortunate Morrissey turned out like that, because the actual music of The Smiths does such a perfect job of capturing (queer) wistfulness. This album feels relatively short, yet it constantly switches gears from denser moments like the title track to pure pop rock such as The Boy With the Thorn in His Side. There's a clear divide between my top 6 and the bottom 4, but I still find myself singing along to Frankly Mr. Shankly every time I listen, which is probably once every couple months. This was one of the first albums I discovered when I started listening to albums in full, and it has remained a constant member of my all-time top 10 ever since. It's hard to overstate how much this meant to me back when I was coming out of the closet.

And, yes, There is a Light That Never Goes Out is one of my go-to karaoke songs because I am a brooding, overdramatic fop.

Seanchan: I was expecting this to be moody, melancholy album that I wouldn't like. And yet again this album cycle, I come away pleasantly surprised! I wasn't doing super close listening but I did pick up on some of the angsty-ness and melodrama. More importantly for myself, I found this instrumentally upbeat and super listenable.

RyoCaliente: Songs that saved my life, part one (three?). The ultimate outcasts' album, still. But it's not emo. The music, and the wit and humour displayed in the lyrics make The Smiths more than just a depressing band (even though they can perfectly be that).

MaxGalactica: Good album. No huge standouts, but I liked every track here. Lots of great acoustic guitar work. Top 5 I'd consider a tier higher than the bottom 5.

Seanchan: After 2 more listens, I'd say that I enjoyed this but it's not a favorite.

HBJDubs: Nothing really sticks out to me, but other than the bottom two the album is pretty good all around

neonreaper: Sorry if its too late, still wanted to rank cuz its a good album

6. The deadline to vote is Sunday, April 23 at 4:00 PM Central Time; the future week poll will close earlier, when I am putting up the next topic

I guess my question is, if RE4 hasn't aged well, what game of its era has? If "hasn't aged well" is simply synonymous with "older," then what is the point of the phrase?

Looking back to the N64/PS1 era, I feel like it's clear games like FF7 and Ocarina of Time aged better than games like Tomb Raider and GoldenEye 007. As someone who didn't start until the PS2 era, a game like Tomb Raider feels like trying to learn an archaic language. Tank controls in a platformer? I honestly struggle to imagine people enjoying that, even though I know they must have.

For RE4, even if future games copied a lot of its technical elements, the truly iconic bits have to do with level design and atmosphere. Few games that followed actually capture its moment-to-moment feel. RE4 is a high point of setpiece-based design, which is something that doesn't really age. Sure, there may be some bits and pieces that could be smoothed out, but I think that's true of every video game ever.

I really don't feel like any major game from the late-PS2 era on has truly aged poorly. They may not match modern design trends but that comes down more to taste than being outright improved upon. The idea of the original RE4 having aged poorly is bizarre to me.

Goldeneye was already outclassed by other FPS games when it released; I've always felt like it's less that it aged poorly and more that people were blinded by the novelty of a decent FPS on consoles.

General Album Comments

FoolFantastic: If you took the most generic form possible of all popular genres, reggae might win out as the best. The problem is, it has such a narrow definition that it is difficult to stray too far from that sound. If you turn on a reggae record, I will probably enjoy it, but I will largely struggle to differentiate between the tracks. Exodus has a few songs that fall into that pit, but it also features several of the most iconic pieces from the genre. I think what gives Marley the edge is the way he utilizes his backing vocalists.

Giggsalot: Hi everyone! As mentioned last week, I thought it would be fun to try a genre we haven't touched yet. Anyone hearing this for the first time, you're not alone! As part of a nerdy personal project to fill in my musical blindspots, I listened to this for the first time about a month ago. As soon as I heard it, my slight sheepishness about never having properly checked out Bob Marley became full-fledged embarrassment. From my very first listen, this was one of the best, most flawless pop albums I've ever heard.

All of the big hits here are on side B, but I think the quality is exceptional throughout. The darker, slightly overlooked songs on the first half really provide the album with gravitas, and every single one of them have moments of pure brilliance. There are so many things I love about this record - the bass lines, the bluesy guitar licks, the simple but evocative lyrics, the vocal harmonies, the fact it ends at the perfect time without overstaying its welcome.

This feels as much like a greatest hits than any studio album I know, just a ludicrous flex of songwriting talent. Entirely deserving of its massive reputation, this is one of the best albums of all time.

Seanchan: Man, that's just an album that goes down smooth. Loving the vibes, even if I'm sure there's more there lyrically than I was paying attention to.

Johnbobb: I've never cared for religious music, largely because most religious music often tends to be repetitive and lazy (Christian rock has to be the single most boring genre of music that exists). But I've also always maintained that Bob Marley is one of the biggest exceptions to that. Most of his music is very directly religious, but never in the generic "god is great" kind of way designed to be easily digestable on mass. It's moreso about how the direct influence on his life and culture, like in So Much Things To Say where he ties the crucifixion to modern day minority oppression or in Jamming, where he sings about how singing and dancing both in the name of equality and his faith.

Seanchan: A pretty great album. Slightly repetitive at points but when I'm enjoying the general sound it hardly matters.

MaxGalactica: Pretty solid album. Reggae is very one-dimensional with little nuance, so it's difficult to get variety in an album like this. It's a nice style regardless. Only the bottom 3 in my rankings didn't capture my interest much.

HBJDubs: Reggae is a genre that I can put on a playlist and chill but I'm not into it enough to seek out specific songs to listen to. If any of these songs came up randomly I would know it's Marley but would probably never remember what song it actually is. Cool album though, it serves its purpose of being something to chill out to.

It's unfortunate Morrissey turned out like that, because the actual music of The Smiths does such a perfect job of capturing (queer) wistfulness.

There is a Light That Never Goes Out
Bigmouth Strikes Again
The Boy With the Thorn in His Side
The Queen is Dead
I Know It's Over
Cemetry Gates
Never Had No One Ever
Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others
Vicar in a Tutu

General Album Comments

FoolFantastic: A phenomenal album from beginning to end. If I prefer the singles, it's more due to exposure than any fault in the rest of the tracks. I feel like a lot of the post-grunge bands took after Pearl Jam in particular. The fact most of those bands became punchlines shows that, even if Pearl Jam's music sounds relatively simple to imitate, it takes a ton of talent to pull it off with convincingly raw emotions. "Black" feels like the underappreciated gem of the grunge era; it's rare for a song to be this vulnerable while also going this hard.

neonreaper: Killer album. Wish I had the ability to type out more on it. No weak tracks!

ZeroSignal: An absolute classic from start to finish. Literally the hidden track is the only thing worth skipping and even that has some good vibe to it.

Johnbobb: Soundgarden is my favorite of the big grunge bands but Ten is probably the best individual album. Just absolute iconic tracks back to back to back.

MaxGalactica: What a great album. Pretty much banger after banger all the way through. Great guitar solos throughout, and Eddie Vedder has a fantastic voice. Black was pretty close to taking the top spot for me, but I like Even Flow too much. Awesome pick this week.

Seanchan: A shockingly good album, outside of the hidden track, which is completely forgettable. I suppose I should clarify and say the "shocking" is for myself, as I have never been big on Pearl Jam's radio hits. I'd listen to them but they were never anything that made me want to see out their albums. Ten is a solid album top to bottom, and even if I'm not super high on any particular song, there's no real weak songs either. Obviously you've got an iconic vocalist but there's enough great instrumentation to keep someone like myself engaged the whole way through.

TheArkOfTurus: This was my favorite album for years as a kid. My tastes have changed, but it's still a good listen.

HBJDubs: I've been sitting on this with a blank top 2 for awhile since I couldn't decide which of Black or Jeremy I like more. They're two of the greatest grunge tracks ever. I never got into Pearl Jam as a whole, but this album is stacked with bangers with the aforementioned two tracks being on a whole other level.

BlueCrystalTear: This is a pretty hard album to rank, honestly. Because every one of these is a banger, most of them in pretty equal ways. I honestly see three "tiers" here with only slight differences between them... well four if you count the weird hidden track, but the other 11 are that close. If you asked me to do this again in two weeks, there'd definitely be a lot of moving around.

ChichiriMuyo: It's nice to do an album I already own. Although I haven't listened to it in a very long time, possibly because the singles are still in fairly heavy rotation on my local rock stations, it still hits. It's also crazy to be reminded just how much this album influenced rock going forward - perhaps even more so than any of the other big four grunge bands at their heights. A real nice hit of nostalgia.

Xtlm: This is near impossible for me to rank. It's one of my favorite albums from one of my favorite bands. All of the songs on here are great.

These days though if I want to listen to this album, I usually just turn to a live concert, or if I need a pick me up, specifically a 1992 live concert (like Pink Pop for example). I would rate this whole ranking differently if we were going on live performances, as I think they play better live then in the studio. While the studio album has this cool mellow rocking out vibe to it that's very unique. Their live stuff was just pure unbridled energy while somehow playing and sounding better then in the studio. Heck, the current version of the band still is lol

The rules:

Seanchan: One of those metal classics that I sadly hadnt heard before, other than the significant radio play the hits have received. This is a really solid album, and an interesting and easy listen.

FoolFantastic: One of the earliest metal albums and still among the very best. Sits at the perfect midpoint between atmospheric and technical magnificence.

Seanchan: A towering achievement and an absolute classic. I hadnt listened to this in a few years and somehow I had forgotten just how amazing this is, a perfect combination of pop, punk, and rock. Never anything but an absolute lock for the top spot in this Rank the Albums.

FoolFantastic: Not my favorite album of the 2000s by any means, but almost certainly the most representative of the culture at the time.

Children and the parents who have to take them to the movies deserve actual effort. There are a ton of great works targeted at children, so it's annoying when a major production clearly puts in little effort because it's coasting on branding.

Seanchan: An overall good album but one that doesnt really thrill me. Still, theres a lot of her hit 90s singles here that make this very listenable.

FoolFantastic: I think this album sits in that unfortunate zone where it was popular right when I was developing my first memories, so it feels too familiar for me to truly appreciate its strength. Despite this, I can't deny the volume of great songs here.

rwlh: This was the biggest disappointment of the bunch for me. Ive always been interested in Bowie, but this album feels like stereotypical classic rock, which Im not that into. Maybe Id like his later output more?
Favorite song: Suffragette City

Seanchan: A rock classic that I sadly had not heard before doing this ranking. Doing a re-listen for this album ranking really cemented that it HAD to be higher than I originally placed it. This is a really solid album front to back! Even if it doesnt have as many big hits (radio or personal) as my next 2 ranked albums (Fever and Thriller) have, it has the advantage of being a no skips album.

FoolFantastic: Simply the best album by one of the greatest musicians (though Low and Blackstar make worthy competition). Though none of the tracks would crack my personal Bowie top 10, pretty much every song here is great at a minimum. Few albums have ever been this consistent front to back. Tying this all together is a story of stardom gone wrong, truly bringing the 'glam' to life.

I don't remember the seasons but I do remember individual episodes. I think the parking garage episode was in one of the first two seasons. Jerry urinating and getting caught is the highlight of those two seasons.

The show improves dramatically when more and more side characters get introduced.

It's actually season 3. I think The Chinese Restaurant is the only episode from the first two seasons typically held up as a classic.

If you took the most generic form possible of all popular genres, reggae might win out as the best.

My ranking:
One Love/People Get Ready
Jamming
Three Little Birds
Exodus
Waiting in Vain
Natural Mystic
Turn Your Lights Down Low
So Much Things to Say
Guiltiness
The Heathen

rwlh: A bit long, but it has an all-time favorite and a bunch of other songs I like too.
Favorite song: Funeral for a Friend (Love Lies Bleeding)

Seanchan: This was one of those albums I wasnt sure I had initially ranked correctly, but after a re-listen, this is exactly where it should be. The opening 4 songs, clocking in at 20-25 minutes, are pretty incredible. Yes, at 75 minutes it is a little long, but theres always something to look forward to. Even my lowest ranked songs arent terrible, they just look bad when you realize there are some stone cold classics at the very top.

FoolFantastic: A sweeping piano rock epic, which is the only time those words will ever go together. Home to several of the greatest songs ever recorded, and though there may be one or two obvious duds among its 17 tracks, the rest all showcase Elton's range. One of the few hour-plus albums I will regularly put on.

Not bad, just something thats hard to remember which tracks are which even a few days later.

Grimes - Art Angels > The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds > Misfits - Static Age

Part of the reason Grimes falling into Musk's circle was so devastating is because Art Angels just might be the greatest electronic pop album ever recorded, with a lot of heart and vulnerability. Pet Sounds, meanwhile, is listed as the single greatest album of all time by Acclaimed Music - this is largely due to its revolutionary recording techniques, but still a phenomenal album in its own right (...if probably not to board 8's particular tastes). Both sit in my all-time top 100. I unfortunately know nothing about Static Age.
