There's actually a commonly-held belief in Japanese society that people who are not of fully Japanese descent are neurologically incapable of learning the language to fluency. Seriously. It takes twice as long to learn as practically anything other language on the planet and that's your reward: the people who speak it will constantly treat you like an idiot because nothing will convince them you're really as fluent as you sound. The tiny minority of Japanese women who do want to date a foreigner don't particularly want one who speaks Japanese well anyway, they want someone to practice their english with. |
