I'm already doing this and not trans
Hey, there are lots of ways to be miserable. We live in a miserable country, even! But having a male level of T was really bad for my brain. That, evidently, was the root of my misery.

googs19 posted...
Well, I'm about there now and working in the "find a therapist" step. Now to see if I can do it without losing my wife and kids!
Ok, so, a few things:
1) Congrats! It took me almost 33 years to get to that point, and then COVID blew everything up and it took forever to get from "admitting I was trans" to "seeing trans dude therapist". So, uhh, I know that's hard

2) I never even managed to go on a date once: I had zero confidence and deeply suppressed jealousy of women (I realized that that's what it was after I had come out to myself and was watching the last half season of BoJack Horseman with a friend. She runs and likes to wear skirts: her legs are and have always been lovely, and I realized I didn't *just* want to stroke them [I never would, for the record: she was never into me like that and is straight as a board], but to have legs like hers!). Combine that with the usual wooziness of being attracted to a woman, and, well...I'm not surprised it never even started working, LOL.

3) But yeah, wife and kids is a lot to navigate. Unfortunately, it's perfectly plausible your wife will leave you, even if she accepts you. It's also possible she'll still be into you. But as I explained above, I can't give you advice on that. Here are a pair of trans women on Twitter who had wives and/or kids, with stories that went various ways:
https://twitter.com/emmy_zje
https://twitter.com/vyrthandi
Certainly I've found following them both helpful myself.

How can I be a happy trans girl like you?
Well, first you've gotta be trans. Unfortunately, that means being horribly miserable. Then you have to admit you're trans, then you have to go see a therapist about it who doesn't suck, go see a doctor about it who doesn't suck for hormones, and find people who don't suck to support you in the process of completely overhauling your identity. Once you're on the hormones, you'll start feeling better and your body will improve. It will improve quickly in some ways, slowly in others, and in ways you didn't anticipate. No two transitions are alike, everyone has their own unique story.
My story includes a ton of super supportive people, especially women.

I've read quite a few, actually. The Disordered Cosmos: On Spacetime, Dark Matter, and Dreams Deferred, The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls (first thing I read after coming out), Norwegian Wood, and Babylon: Mesopotamia and the Birth of Civilization. All great. In fact, I was up past 3 AM last night pondering the parallels between the past-obsessed Assyrians and Neo-Babylonians who seemed to lose faith in the future and our own society, with its increasing unwillingness to grapple with current and future challenges.

Also, here's something I've been working on, or, rather, what I've been working on with.

Yeah, there's a lot that sucks about being trans. Finding a dermatologist who accepts Medicaid AND does electrolysis, for instance estheticians more frequently do stuff like that, but they don't take health insurance and electrolysis on masculine facial hair especially is expensive.

But those difficulties are without, not within.

Is it kind of like Carl Sagan's Cosmos?
Not having read Cosmos, I cannot say, but Dr. Prescod-Weinstein does talk a lot about physics. She also has a lot to say about how we do science, who gets to be a scientist and who gets credit and why, about how she feels the field comes up short and how it could be better, peppered with lots of historical and autobiographical anecdotes.
She's the first Black-Jewish woman (well, technically, she's agender) to be an astrophysicist, and the first one to also teach Women's Studies in addition. As such, it's also a work of sociology studying the field of physics.
One comparison she made was between the quantum physics of electrons and gender expression, and her dismay that many scientists acknowledge(or even study) the complexity of the former but refuse to even consider the latter.

One of my favorite bits about this is from (the otherwise mediocre) Shadows of New York, where you play Julia, a Lasombra vampire.
She needs to have her girlfriend apply her makeup, because she doesn't have a reflection(in Vampire: The Masquerade, this is a Lasombra-only bane: other vampires have reflections) and thus can't do it herself. And she needs to trust her girlfriend to do a good job because she has no way of knowing what her face looks like.
Really, the only really good part of that game (IMO) is its exploration of Julia's fraught relationship with her human girlfriend, and their mutual struggle to stay connected to one another even though they live in completely different realities.

I guess how bad it is depends on what kind of rules your vampirism adheres by. Like, in VtM, you don't have to kill for your blood: in fact, it's considered very bad to drain a human dry, but vampires in other universes have no choice but to kill.
Of course, in VtM, your unlife is going to be a constant mess of centuries-old political intrigues in which you are likely doomed to be nothing but a pawn, which seems like a total drag. I think I would be sorely tempted to catch a sunrise.

I'm happy as hell, because a former coworker of mine took me to Ulta yesterday, where I bought a ton of makeup with her guidance (I felt a natural look was a good place to start. Total damages: $153. Setting spray, tinted moisturizer, bronzer, blush, eye shadow, eye liner, clear mascara, etc.) and then she gave me a primer on how to apply it. I have to train my eyes to cooperate insofar as getting them to close one at a time and habituate them to objects near them, but it feels really good to have my own makeup and know what to do with it.

So TC, do you wear makeup, and if so, what kinds of looks do you favor? Any recommendations?
I plan on corralling other lady friends to give me demos, so I can absorb their culture and uniqueness into my own. Resistance is futile.

https://newsletters.theatlantic.com/deep-shtetl/61f992de9277230021ae11f7/are-jews-a-race-whoopi-goldberg-holocaust/

Really, it sounds like her remarks come from a place of ignorance and confusion as to how to define Jewish people. Rabbi Rutenberg defines Jews as a "people" and Mr. Rosenburg as a "family": they are bound by common traditions and beliefs that cross racial and cultural boundaries in a way that confounds typical modern categories like race, nation, etc.

Connecticut is full of brewers, and both Two Roads and Thimble Island have extensive collections of sours (Thimble calls theirs The Sour Siren series: the beers are all named after women and have drawings on the can of them enjoying or holding whatever fruit is featured. Theyre all drawn by the same woman.)
They both also have a full suite of beers. Thimble makes an excellent ale (their flagship was an ale), pilsner, and several porters and stouts. Two Roads is more IPA focused, but makes a nice Hefeweizen too.

Theyre just the two most prominent brewers in this corner of Connecticut. Therere literally dozens more.

Christine Jorgensen served in the US Army in WW2, went to school, learned that bottom surgery was a thing, and went to Denmark to get it started. She is one of the first recorded Americans to have received the triple triad of trans female bottom surgery: orchiectomy, penectomy, and vaginoplasty. She reported eagerly to friends via letter: "As you can see by the enclosed photos, taken just before the operation, I have changed a great deal. But it is the other changes that are so much more important. Remember the shy, miserable person who left America? Well, that person is no more and, as you can see, I'm in marvelous spirits."* Her bravery in undergoing what were then extremely novel procedures helped push those operations forward.
She also spoke openly about her experiences, as bedeviled by transphobia as she was (for example, she was unable to legally marry her would-be husband Howard Knox, because her birth certificate listed her as male, and Howard lost his job as soon as the engagement was announced). She was a nightclub entertainer until she died of cancer in 1989.

*Ever since I started hormones, people have been telling *me* I looked happier, even sometimes people I wasn't out to yet. And I certainly feel happier, so this little excerpt spoke to me. Nothing feels better than becoming the person you were always meant to be.

Steven Universe ends a little too neatly, but The Movie and Future, whatever their flaws, complicate the picture beautifully. The fact that Steven, specifically, doesn't know what to do with himself now that no one needs his help anymore is a fantastic concept, and the fact that they actually confront how goddamned traumatized he was/would realistically be by everything that happened makes it pretty unique.
