ElatedVenusaur 11/07/18 4:20:07 PM #9 | Giant_Aspirin posted... Tyranthraxus posted...99% chance this is preemptive to avoid being subpeonad by the house for Russian connections. Yeah, he doesn't have to fire Mueller, just shoot down everything he wants to do and give him a budget of $1. Subtlety is obviously not Trump's forte though, so I expect it'll get dumber. |
Topic | Poll: do you think the mid-terms were a success or failure for Trump? |
ElatedVenusaur 11/07/18 12:32:40 PM #12 | This was a mixed result. The Democrats come out a bit ahead(what with winning back control of the House of Representatives and all), but the Senate results *were* a bit disappointing for them, as was Andrew Gillum's (somewhat) surprising loss in the Florida gubernatorial election. They did; however, make some impressive gains on the state level(Florida notwithstanding), including complete control of New Mexico, Colorado, New York, and Connecticut. |

ElatedVenusaur 11/07/18 11:00:24 AM #15 | I don't understand why you would need to make something up to smear Menendez. The blindingly-obvious corruption is right there. |
Topic | I'm an ignorant Brexit resident...what does Democrats winning mean for Trump? |
ElatedVenusaur 11/07/18 10:49:29 AM #20 | Basically, American elections are staggered. The House of Representatives has two-year terms and all 438 seats are up(this is too few, but that's another topic) The President is elected every 4 years, and can only serve 2 terms total*. The Senate has 6 year terms, but they're staggered. About 1/3 are up every election year. This bunch of Senate seats was very advantageous for the Republicans. *2 FULL terms. In other words, if a Vice President becomes President more than half way into a term, they can still serve an additional two terms. |
Topic | Nationally, this was a win for Trump and democrats |
ElatedVenusaur 11/07/18 9:57:19 AM #9 | Giant_Aspirin posted... The House will not pass anything Trump and his cronies put together. but you can continue living in denial, we know Trumpers are really good at that. They probably will be willing to compromise, possibly on the worst things. |

Topic | Why are conservatives celebrating? |
ElatedVenusaur 11/07/18 12:03:38 AM #5 | Picking up seats in the Senate is very good for them, as the next two cycles are going to be hard on them and they can more easily pack the judiciary with chuds. Also, winning the Governor's Mansion in Florida and (likely) Connecticut represent upset victories. |
Topic | Republicans got their embarrassing, archaic asses kicked tonight by Democrats |
ElatedVenusaur 11/06/18 11:59:36 PM #3 | It wasn't nearly as good a night for Dems as anticipated, particularly in the Senate, and especially in Florida. |
Topic | Phil Bredesen endorsed Kavanaugh and still got ***** wrecked in the election |
ElatedVenusaur 11/06/18 11:58:18 PM #5 | I forget who said it, but, there's a good quote for this: "You can't make a man understand something when his job depends on him not understanding it"(or something like that). Pelosi, Schumer, etc. are all beholden to wealthy Democratic voters for whom the status quo is just fine, thank you. |

Generally speaking? Probably. But does that hold in, say, Tennessee? Texas? And if it does, is it enough to put Bredesen or O'Rourke over the top? |
Topic | 2018 Early-Vote Turn-out Has Been Massive |
ElatedVenusaur 11/03/18 10:44:39 PM #1 | https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/11/02/us/politics/early-voting.html https://www.texastribune.org/2018/11/02/early-voting-turnout/ Voters in Nevada, Arizona, Texas, and Tennessee have shown up in droves to vote early, nearly matching the total number of votes cast in those states in 2014. Almost every other state with early-voting has seen a marked increase in turn-out as well. This is great news, but what exactly this means is unclear as of yet. |

ElatedVenusaur 11/01/18 12:14:23 AM #8 | I don't really pay attention to anyone in particular, but Chris Hayes and Nomiki Konst are pretty good(the latter is running for public office, so she may not technically be a "pundit" anymore). He's not a pundit, but if you also like football, Sage Rosenfels is way better on Twitter than he ever was in the NFL. |

It's simply a (seemingly) principled excuse for why they oppose government programs, and one that the press(composed primarily of wealthy technocrats) finds compelling. |
