You should probably be fine. Especially if you have White Magic. Do not put a Battalion on Felix yet though. His ability is a godsend in early game. Eventually the advantages of a Battalion will more than offset his ability, but not yet. So if you bought one for him, I'd probably reload to save that money. Likewise if there are any units you don't necessarily plan on using long term (Ashe, Ingrid) then they can probably live without a Battalion because their authority ranks are meaningless.

Anyone you plan on using who isn't Felix wants a Battalion ASAP, but especially Dimitri and Annette. Dimitri's entire purpose revolves around hitting A in Authority, Annette picks up Rally Speed at C+ and in early-mid game having a unit get +4 to Speed and Strength can be very useful.

Actually, I do have a question. I think I might have made a mistake but I haven't saved yet. I just unlocked Battalions. I went ahead and bought and assigned everyone to a Battalion as soon as possible. However, I'm currently out of gold with no Vulnerarys. Is that a mistake? Should I only buy a few Battalions and buy more vulnerarys instead? Will I get enough gold throughout the month to grab more? I don't have merchants unlocked yet so I can't sell fish, vegetables, etc yet either if I wanted to. I just saw Stride and that White Magic Battalions and wanted to buy those instantly and went on a tear buying all that I needed.

What is up with this Shifty Merchant that appears after Chapter 2 in the monastery? He has appeared in every route, stays for several chapters, doesn't sell anything, then disappear. I don't get it. Is he trying to lead me to some DLC like that one Monk I mentioned a while ago?

Beat the second map. What a slog. Once I got the feel for the map it wasnt difficult. Just time consuming. I didnt even use any pulses until the boss because, why not? I see Ill need to buy many more vulnerarys ASAP until I get a healer with more than 5 heal spells.

Yea I will give many characters that ability for sure. Ashe does pathetic damage as well. It seems that Bow might is really bad which I didnt notice before. I think Im going to have to hard bait the enemy and jump them. Have Dedude tank the archer and jump enemies with combat arts and gambits

Well. That chapter is indeed hard. I gave up on my first attempt and felt like I was checkmated early on. Ill have to change my strategy.

Pass is one thing but add in the fact that the archers have 3 range and can double everyone with a high hit rate is just so annoying. Also. Byleths Gambit accuracy is so low early on at 40% without a link attack so stopping the passing thieves feels up to chance as well

What is the best class for Dimitri? I was going to go Wyvern but with limited flying Battalions, Im thinking of making use of budding in riding and go Cavalier -> Paladin. MAYBE Bow Knight? I do need to get Vantage though too.

Finished that chapter. It took me a few restarts. Any mistake was pretty much a character death. Was fun though. It was taking real tactics. Im assuming the next chapter will be easier. Im not going against the students and I THINK I unlock Divine Pulse? Divine Pulse is incredibly important on Maddening it seems. I would have breezed through that chapter if I had it

Catherine's issue is that all she really has is bases and growths and while those are important, she needs a lot of resources to make her more optimal. Sword classes as a whole are just kinda meh, but if she wants to fly she needs to start from scratch on flying and Lances, and she has a boon in neither. If you want Death Blow on her, she needs to start from scratch on Axes to get Brigand.

Eventually her raw statistical advantage will stop being as inherently useful especially as other units with more developed skills, CAs and classes start to come online. Don't get me wrong her falling off is less her becoming bad, but just less useful. You can absolutely use her the whole game. You can even keep her sword focused as a relative low-resource unit (though I'd probably switch to Assassin for the better movement). She'll just not dominate anymore.

That works perfectly fine with me. If I can get great value out of her until late game then she did her job and some. Sounds like a sensational unit. Hell, she is sensational by just making early maddening much easier as you mentioned.

Im assuming that early Maddening will be the hardest by far outside an outlier map or two. That is usually how it goes for these crazy difficulties

Catherine is the queen of early game Maddening. Her base stats especially if your recruit her ASAP are absolutely bonkers. (Seriously, look at that https://fireemblemwiki.org/wiki/Catherine/Stats#Chapter_4) Her relic is amazing. She falls off a little bit later just because she has weird weapon proficiencies. Swords kinda suck, Brawling is mostly useless for women. Her best class is probably Falcon Knight, where she can still operate as a pseudo Petra.

Shamir is the best Sniper in the game and completely invalidates Ashe's entire existence. She gets the earliest Hunter's Volley and requires almost no resources to be good as she naturally comes with a high Bow rank which is really all she needs. You might want the D in axes to cheese for Brigand and Death Blow, but otherwise she is just reliable and low-effort.

I'd probably advise against Manuela for a first time Maddening run. She is just too weird of a unit. She can warp but her warp is kinda meh. If you already have Lindhart and Lysithea that is plenty of warpage.

As an aside, 3H doesn't really have Jeigans. There are early game promoted units like Catherine and Shamir, but they get experience at the same rate as other units of the same level and their growths are comparable to unpromoted units.

Holy shit those base stats are NUTS. She gets experience the same rate too?! I might use her all the way through! With an 18 base speed and a 75% speed growth, she can probably consistently double the entire game. Plus, her relic is a brave type weapon. Im shocked she actually drops off to become meh.

Good call on Manuela. 3 Warp users probably isnt necessary. 2 Warps, Stride and Rescue should be enough. I was able to kill Edelgard in 1 round on chapter 20 with a combination of Stride, Rescue and Warp.

I feel that Catherine and Shamir will be invaluable early on

Alright. Im starting maddening today. Wish me luck lol. Im planning on recruiting and actually using Lysethia, Manuela, Linhardt and Catherine. Maybe Shamir as well. Lysethia, Manuela and Linhardt for Warp, Catherine for her relic. Im not sure if Ill actually use her or not. Maybe early game since she is a Jegan I guess? I dont know how good she gets. Shamir because she is also a Jegan and I probably can get Hunters Volley very quickly with her vs other units.

On the plus side BL Maddening means you get to really appreciate the Enemy Phase God that is Dimitri. Battalion Wrath + Battalion Vantage + Killer Weapon + Retribution means that you can basically Warp Dimitri into the middle of anything but a group of Monsters and watch him Kill every last one of them with impunity. Difficulty be damned.

I might be going off on the deep end here but I have a question. How good would Felix be in Maddening if you end up classing him into Hero or Swordmaster but put a lot of focus on his avoid? Ill try to explain it.

Apparently, Felix is one of the few characters that is fast enough to consistently double based on my research. Physical Avoid seems to be calculated in 3hs mainly based on Attack Speed and Weight of weapons/weapon avoid, shields, etc. There are other things to consider as well but those things tend to benefit the player in most situations when it comes to avoid. Magic avoid is mostly (Speed+luck)/2 but there is more that goes into that too. Felix also seems to have a decent Luck base with decent growths in it. So combing that with his high speed should let him avoid magic reliably as well.

So Felix should already be pretty good at avoiding based on his speed and luck. If I mainly use swords with him then that also helps some because swords should be easier to avoid attacks with. Sword prowess gives him avoid as it gets higher and higher. Level 5 is +20 avoid. I could also have him win the dance competition which gives him the +20 Avoid with swords equipped. That plus, sword prowess can give him a max of +40 avoid at base.

After +40, he can add more avoid based on his speed. Being a Hero, I could have him use Axebreaker and/or Lancebreaker for +20 a avoid. This wont be as reliable and its doubtful you can or even want to use both but it is there. That might even be overkill. Maybe you want Weight -3 which can increase speed which increases avoid. You could also equip Battalion Vantage since this will let Felix attack first which might not have him chance the avoid in some scenarios. Plus, he will get an attack boost of +5 if his battalion is annihilated because of his Lone Wolf trait.

I feel like I could make it work with some fine tuning and testing but who knows. It could all just be terrible. This is just me theory crafting in my head. Im trying to think of ways to make other units as useful as possible since I wont be able to bring infinite flyers.

The speed modifiers are actually kinda irrelevant, since most characters won't ever naturally double a non-armor the entire game. The entire reason Sniper is good is because doubling combat arts are that important. Any CA that can allow a unit to kill without getting doubled is that important. Sniper just gives relative easy access to one. Anyone who can learn a CA that naturally gives them Player Phase delete ability (Swift Strikes, PBV, Vengence) would never be a Sniper.

Grappler's Fierce Iron Fist is similarly valued.

If you aren't doing NG plus I probably wouldn't have more than 3 Flyers. There just aren't enough good Flying Battalions. One of those Flyers should be Sylvain because Swift Strikes.

Enemy Phase is much more important this time around. Early game you'll want a real tank. Mid-to-late game a dodge tank becomes important for baiting and weakening. Thankfully, BL gives you Dedue and Dimitri who do those trolls amazingly.

Thank you for all this info. The 3 flyer thing was huge. I didnt even consider how many flying battalions existed. I was definitely doing regular new game for this run

Never played Maddening, but a lot of discussion I've seen on the board suggests that Sniper is superior to Bow Knight on maddening due to Hunter's Volley and Bow Knight's poor speed modifiers.

Really? I thought they would be pretty even. Hunter Volley is really strong but I figured Movement + Bow Range + Movement after attacking would be a really big deal. I though Sniper would actually be slightly worse.

How much better are Wyvern Lords vs Bow Knights? Im going to be researching and asking a lot of questions before starting Maddening. Bow Knight is easily my favorite class and I would love for Byleth to be one. I know I should have a ton of fliers too. I also need Rescue and Warp staves so Im recruiting Lysethia. I dont know who else has those staves.

OK. I just beat the Golden Deer route. While it was better than Crimson Flower by a large margin, Im still a little annoyed. So much is left not answered.

What happened to Rhea? Yea she was injured but there was no info on her after the final battle. She could have died from her injuries for all I know. There was still no info on Byleths mother or the entire story of what happened before Jeralt left the monastery. I still have no idea who the mother is. Jeralt is still shrouded in mystery.

Claude never really said he was from Almyra and never got into his details about his past. He promised he would go into details after he learned about me but there was zero payoff. Dimitris death was really stupid. I thought he would escape and I would talk to
him again but nope, he just gets stabbed by spears after collapsing. Dedude just disappeared and he was never brought up again. We also never saw Hildas brother which blew my mind. How can he be mentioned so much with zero payoff? Im also shocked that Flayn and Seteth never told Byleth about who they really are. That made no sense. I got confirmation who they were through their supports and a paralogue but that was never discussed with Byleth directly.

The game also never really explained the Javelin of Light. It was used by those who slither in the dark but nothing really shows how that is happening. If it is a spell then it is unknown who is casting it since the game never really showed someone actually casting it. It also looked man made and just came out of nowhere so I question if it is just a pure spell.

I also felt like Byleth could have saved Edelgard at the end instead of killing her but I can let that pass for several reasons. I could see Edelgard using that moment of weakness to her advantage. Also, you promised several people to kill her so I guess you have no choice.

Im sure there is many more things I want to say but this is everything on the top of my head. I know the criticism seems worse that Crimson Flower but trust me its not. This route was FAR better IMO. Claude is the only sane Lord in this game.

Another thing, Im going to try to beat the Blue Lions route on Maddening. Should be a royal pain in the ass

Dimitri just lead everyone to their deaths. His reactions to them dying was almost nothing. He literally had three dots for Sylvain dying. Im assuming there is something more there with that which you will see on the Blue Lion route. The only one that he wanted to actually retreat, which everyone could have on defeat, was Dedude and it insulted him while telling him to do so. What a piece of shit. You send everyone else to their deaths but you get the honor of retreating along with your best friend that you practically hate? Yea. Great leadership there. Actual asshole. He was so bad that Edelgard seemed like the better individual and she started this war.

OK. This shit is actually bothering me. I combined Stride, Rescue and Warp to get to Dimitri at the beginning of the fight for both Claude and Byleth. This dude has lost his damn mind. He wont listen to reason. None of his friends even questions it. They are just willing to die for this insane King. No questions asked. He is going to get all of his loyal friends killed and it will be all his fault.

Ill actually play the chapter tomorrow but this shit is nuts.

I felt like World took you by the hand and showed you how to do everything. Got to play it due to Xbox Game Pass. It's an interesting game, but It's just not a satisfying gameplay loop for me. I don't really have any desire to hunt the monsters.

Its on Game Pass? I might try that game. Maybe I just need more hand holding? I doubt that is the case because I never needed that for other games but there is no harm in trying I guess

Im pretty sure there is a full compilation on YouTube but I avoided it to not be spoiled.

On a side note, I once again must say how impressed I am with how everyone actually matures post time skip. Physically sure but the mental maturity is fantastic. Their post time skip supports show it well and even their dialogue in battle really shows this. I know its small but it really immerses me into the story. The game does a very good job of letting you getting to know everyone pretty intimately so the 5 year gap feels like you havent seen them in 5 years. Hell, even some voices sound different.

Ignatz is an all around good example. His voice is deeper and he sounds far more confident than he ever did before. Especially in battle. He is still Ignatz but you can see the maturity.

There are plenty of other examples too. Marianne shocked me with how much better she got at talking to people as another example.

So I just saw a video talking about the worst map in the game. I never played it on my first playthrough but I did recently on my second. I think someone mentioned it in this topic its the map after the time skip.

I did struggle on this map even in Hard Mode but I thought it was because I screwed up leveling up my units or something. I didnt put much thought into it outside of that. I remember Byleth could be one rounded by the enemy and there was no way that map would be that hard without me screwing up ahead of time. Apparently.. I was wrong.

If that map is that difficulty by design... I cant imagine that map on Maddening Mode. Jesus...

The White Clouds section does Leonie a giant disservice by locking her B support until right after chapter 9, even though the actual contents of it has no reference to chapter 9, and Leonie seems like a fucking turdmeister because of the comments she makes, right after the events of chapter 9. It's honestly baffling as a choice.

I always wondered about this. If the chapter is the one I'm thinking about, she said some things that made me flat out hate her. Like why in the hell would you say some of those things right after something like that happened? Her other supports after the time skip definitely make her feel like a much better character.

The Time Skips in this game are so satisfying. Post timeskip Leione is much better IMO. Sure she still looks up to Jeralt as a hero but it isn't so damn obnoxious anymore. She also seems to be more calm. It's quite impressive that the game feels like every character has actually matured in 5 years. Doing that with so many isn't easy. Also, Flayn seems a little... odd. She is very... forceful... when in battle. "OWNWARD!" She says it like she is so angry. That can't be on accident. I wonder what it is.

A couple of classes have a combat art that can only be used in that class as their mastery ability. Off the top of my head, Grappler, Warmaster, Swordmaster, Assassin and Sniper. Though Grappler, Warmaster and Assasin also get abilities in addition to their class-specific combat art.

Im guessing Hunters Volley is the Sniper ability. It was insanely powerful on my first run

Wait a second. Im concerned here. What happened to all the Knights of Seiros after the time skip? I thought they would have returned to the Monastery after we reclaimed it and fixed it up. No Alois, Catherine, Shamir or the teachers. No one outside of Seteth and Flayn. I know I didnt have see the teachers in the Crimson Flower route but I thought it was because of that. I didnt expect everyone to just disappear without even being mentioned.

I don't think they should build on Three Houses' class system. I think they should burn it to the ground. Which is not to say I dislike it, I don't. It's really good. For this game. For one game in the franchise. It shouldn't be the norm. In general my feeling towards many of Three Houses' systems is that they work well as a one-off thing apart from the franchise's standards. Sorta like a Gaiden game really. The monastary can be obnoxious, but contained to this one entry I've never minded it. If that sort of between chapters busy-work is going to be standard moving forward, I will absolutely detest it.

Oh yea. I hope they can integrate on it while dropping the monastery. I ended up liking it but I can see it being annoying. In fact, once I play through every route once then I know it will be annoying.

I need to play Dimitris route to see the deterioration first hand. Im one the last mission before the time skip on the Golden Deers route. This man seemed to have flipped the switch in his personality. Ill have this girls head. I swear it.
