I was here before the Xbox launched, when it was announced even. The consensus around gamefaqs was that it would fail.

I don't blame anyone who would think that.

Hell without Halo maybe it would have.

If it did fail, I wonder what would have become of Rare? Would Microsoft keep them to work on PC games? Would another company swoop in and snatch them up? Or would they float around in corporate limbo? I doubt Nintendo would have reacquired them, since they were unwilling to keep them in the first place.

Crazy to think about. If the Xbox flopped out the gate maybe they wouldn't have even bought them the following year.

Some other interesting things

- Square was nearly bought out by Microsoft. To the point where contracts were drawn up and everything. The only thing that stopped them was Square asked for more money in the last possible moment

- Microsoft also attempted to buy Nintendo. They met with them several times. I think most people assume Nintendo would tell them to fuck off and go away but it didn't really happen like that. Takeada even went to Redmond and pitched a joint console. It fell through because both companies wanted to be in charge. Microsoft also pitched them a really beneficial partnership on Xbox. Nintendo knew everything about Xbox before it was announced. They said no because it would appear like a defeat.

The gaming industry was hectic around this time. Pretty much all of the decisions made then are what defines the shape of the industry now.

I made a topic about the Xbox history a few months ago as I was reading a book all about it. There's a lot of interesting stuff.

one thing that annoys me is the Resistance name. it doesn't really make sense. what are they resisting? they won. the Republic should be dominant again and in fact I think they supposedly ARE. and it's the Empire remnants trying to take back power. so the Empire remnants should be called the Resistance. not the other way around.

They're not a part of the Republic. The Republic doesn't have an official army.

Ah, interesting. So, what do you guys think about that? Is that Microsoft reading the tea leaves of Sega's demise, or just not giving a shit about anything cuz bill gates money?

It was a mix of a few different things that all eventually lead to Xbox. This article goes into it pretty well.

http://www.shacknews.com/article/95635/how-the-original-xbox-team-convinced-insulted-bill-gates-to-green-light-a-console
Fries explained that there were two teams trying to sell Gatesthen chairman and chief software architect, a position the Microsoft co-founder created for himselfand CEO Steve Ballmer on creating a game console. Fries headed one team, and put together a proposal for, in essence, a PC in a box. It would run on Windows and contain a hard disk drive to minimize loading times.

The other team, led by designer Seamus Blackley, pitched a box modeled after Sega's Dreamcast, on the basis that "at the time, Dreamcast was king. Influence," Blackley wrote on Twitter upon revealing his original concept sketches for the Xbox.

Gates threw in with Fries' team. He liked the idea of building a game console that served as a Trojan horse: a game machine to the untrained eye, but under the hood, another Windows platform. Gates allotted one year for the Xbox team to put a business plan together and get the ball rolling. The strategy underwent some modifications.

"Then we spend a year going over what it's actually going to take, the [second] team shuts down and joins us, and we become more like them, but at some point we drop Windows. We want this closed thing that runs games really well," Fries explained (via NeoGAF).

There was just one problem. Fries and his teammates, including Blackley and fellow Xbox co-creator J Allard, forgot to inform Gates that Windows would no longer comprise the beating heart of Microsoft's console. At a meeting scheduled for 4:00 pm on Valentine's Day, Gates blew his top.

"So we go into the meeting and four o'clock Valentine's Day," Fries said. "Bill walks in, he's holding a PowerPoint deck and yells, 'This is the blanking insult to everything I've done at this company' and that was the start, so we all looked at [Xbox director and designer J Allard] because we knew Bill's mad about the no Windows thing, because we forgot to 'pre-disaster' him, so J is in shock for a minute and Bill yells at me and shuts me down and Robbie steps up and Bill shuts him down anyway, and then Ballmer goes through and says we're gonna lose a lot of money and he's beating us up about that."

An hour passes. Two hours. Fries and the others steal glances at their watches. It's nearing six o'clock on the most romantic day of the year, and Gates is still unleashing hellfire and brimstone. To Fries' amazement, one of the other attendees raises a hand. Gates pauses in mid-tirade and calls on him.

"'What about Sony?' and he says, 'Sony is slowly invading the living room with a processor here software there, they could be a threat to Microsoft.'"

Gates and Ballmer stared at each other. "Yeah," Gates said. "What about Sony?"

Gates turned to the Xbox team and promised to give them everything they needed to create their console, Windows or no Windows. Ballmer echoed the chairman's vow.

"And I turn to Robbie and say, 'That was the weirdest meeting I've ever been in,'" Fries said.

I think that summarizes everything that lead up to it.

The article doesn't mention it but there were even powerpoint presentations about the threat Sony was making towards the company with the PS2. People don't really mention this these days but Sony was hyping up the PS2 as a computer replacement before launch.

It'll be the biggest thing to impact games since mobile gaming.

We're gonna have Microsoft, Google, Sony, EA and NVIDIA all competing to get subscribers. Some of those will fail. At least one of them is gonna make big bank.

It's not going to replace traditional games. It's going to be an alternative. The good thing about this is that it decreases the hardware and price barrier for a lot of people. Hell it might even convince some people to buy hardware and games to play them in the best possible way. We already see Xbox Game Pass improving sales for their games. People like owning the stuff they like.

A lot of people will complain but overall I think it will be a good thing. Imagine how many more people can get into something like Life is Strange.

At the very least it'll be interesting to see.

Microsoft primarily approved the Xbox because of how Sony was hyping up the PS2. They were considered a threat.

I don't think Sega mattered that much overall to them. They were trying out a few different things around that time and all these different teams were competing. The original idea for the Xbox was a gaming PC with a quick boot up time.

Bill Gates seem to have given the go ahead for the actual Xbox in early 2000. I think the Dreamcast was still okay then.

There was a pretty big internal debate within Microsoft at the time. There was a team within Microsoft arguing that the Xbox was a waste of time because they were working with Sega.

They were working on a few different things at the time and a few teams were competing with each other. The Xbox team won in the end.

Because the two parties disagreed this lead to them being slow and ineffective. Which gave an opportunity for the New Order to rise and gradually get the support of Centrists in secret.

This is a legitimately interesting backstory, but all for naught since I heard all the New Republic's governing infrastructure got shot to heck in the first movie and none of the other materials cover much so it all just reverts to Rebellion vs. Empire with added feminist propaganda.

It's no wonder that they're trying to replace Kennedy lol.

They probably avoided covering this stuff in the movies because they didn't want another episode 1 style backlash. Either that or JJ Abrams just wanted to play it really safe with TFA.

Starkiller base was a weapon. The Republic was the Government. They disarmed themselves in an attempt to have a peaceful Galaxy. The Resistance was an unofficial army lead by Leia who knew the First Order was gaining power.

The FIRST ORDER reigns. Having decimated the peaceful Republic, Supreme Leader Snoke now deploys his merciless legions to seize military control of the galaxy. Only General Leia Organas band of RESISTANCE fighters stand against the rising tyranny, certain that Jedi Master Luke Skywalker will return and restore a spark of hope to the fight. But the Resistance has been exposed. As the First Order speeds toward the rebel base, the brave heroes mount a desperate escape.

https://www.resetera.com/threads/new-intellivision-console-details-no-ports-or-dlc-strictest-quality-control-ever-all-games-7-10.46182/

Facebook Q&A is up. They discuss plans for the console but not specific tech details as those are coming October 1st.

https://www.facebook.com/IntellivisionEntertainment/videos/863584233843255/

Summary:
Online, Wi-Fi, capable console
Digital Store
Online Leaderboard
Will include as many OG Intellivision games for free as they can get (apx. 60 to 80).
Old games are not the focus. Not a "flashback" console.
Will include at least 7 new games or updates of Intellivision games. "New graphics, new sounds" but the same gameplay. These will be free and are the 10 games mentioned in the VB article.
20-50 new games on the store at launch.
Project has been in the planning stages for "many years". Not trying to cash in on the Nintendo Classic craze.
Aiming for the "games for everyone" crowd. Want families to be able to play together at the same level. Don't want to have games just for kids, casual or hardcore games. Everyone is at the same level as importance when getting software for the console.
They understand that the console needs to have, exclusive, must play titles to not fail like the OUYA. Console will live and die not on specs, but the launch lineup.
"In no way" trying to compete with the existing platforms.
No media solutions like Netflix.
Not looking for ports from developers. Will welcome existing licenses but want original projects.
Want 2D games (including "2.5D").
Controller will be based the original Intellivision controller (disk) but there will be alternatives. Can't speak to overlays but they are doing something with it. Sounds like a touchscreen that will use overlays onscreen.
Want to involve the homebrew community.
How will the console be different from everyone else? Quality control will be the strictest in a platform ever.
Games on the platform will be at "least a 7 (out of 10) or higher".
No DLC allowed. New games only.
Video breaks up at this point. Giving up.

Uhhhh ok, so the 7/10 bit is like 47 minutes into the video and its even more wild to actually hear him talk about it.

They dont seem to have any understanding of how games are made? They dont seem to have any understanding how games are made. I skimmed a bit beforehand while trying to find it and the way they talk wanting emails of game submissions sounds sort of like they want pitches, but I guess its more that they want finished games? Because then they talk about wanting strict quality control and probably only 10/1000 e-mails making it, etc. And just...

Who in the world would develop for a platform that could so easily arbitrarily reject them right at the end?

Oh, but dont worry, if youre at least at a 5 or a 6, they might work with you to improve the game. His example is... if the graphics are bad, they could try to get you connected to a different artist. Because Im sure that would go over well with your team members...

Meanwhile, immediately before this he talks about wanting to build a community to help people make games... but he compares it to Fiver. The idea being people can form a team and make a game even if they only have design ideas by getting other team members that way and like... on a team that small, for the small amount of money youd surely be getting, is it really worth being bossed around by someone whos just an ideas person instead of making your own game? And his example is a 10 year old girl having an idea other 10 year old girls would also like and being able to act on it, which is a neat concept, but... I dont think a 10 year old can manage a team of professional adults or, uh, pay them.

You might have missed it, but just before E3 2018 a new challenger entered the console war: The Intellivision is returning nearly four decades after it initially launched.

The original Intellivision, released as a competitor to the Atari VCS in 1979, had a much better controller than the Atari and a great library of often oddball games. According to current Intellivision Entertainment president, Tommy Tallarico, the controller and games remain the focus of the next-generation Intellivision. Speaking to IGN at E3 2018, Tallarico shared a few new details about the console, its controller, its planned library, and his vision for what could make it a success alongside modern PCs, phones, consoles, and even its resurrected rival, the upcoming re-launched Atari VCS.

Who Is the New Intellivision For?

Tallarico says targeting basically everyone but "the gamer" is the goal.

"So at Intellivision, we have a big white board in the office... I write on there 'hardcore gamer, casual gamer, 10-year-old girl, 40-year-old single mom, 70-year-old grandpa.' I put ages and creeds and colors and races and age groups and genders. We have this all on a big wall. What I tell my team is this: Not a single one of these [types] of people are more important than the other. So we're not trying to create a system for hardcore gamers, Tallerico said.

Tallarico and the newly formed Intellivion Entertainment used the Nintendo Wii as a starting place for designing a new console.

So how can Intellivision build a library of hits? Tallarico believes dipping into the classic Intellivision library is a good start. Shark! Shark! is one example of a classic game that he plans to bring back to the forthcoming Intellivision.

"Shark! Shark! is a really simple, fun game that people get into You're a small fish. You can eat smaller fish to grow bigger and a shark comes out and you want to grow bigger so you can keep eating more fish. That's a concept that's simple, but we need to update the graphics, you need to update the sounds."

Tallarico also pointed to Astro Smash, Tron: Deadly Discs, Biplanes, Snafu, Major League Baseball, Pitfall!, and Night Stalker as examples of old Intellivision games that could see a remake.

Perhaps more importantly, however, is what you won't see on the Intellivision:
Violent Games: "[If it's] violent, if it's not E for Everyone, then no it's not going on the console." Tallarico wants the console itself to be rated E for Everyone.
Complicated Games: "If you can't explain the game in 10 seconds, or if it needs a manual, it's not on our system."
3D Games: "There's not going to be any 3D. We're not trying to compete with Nintendo. We're not trying to build the next Zelda.... We're not going to be creating 3D worlds."

Development on the Intellivision and at least 10 launch games is happening now, and the big reveal is planned for October 1, 2018. On that date Tallarico says we'll see the system and "Get a list of all the amazing things that we're bringing back."

But unlike other systems out there, there won't be any crowdfunding or preorders.

"I'm not going to ask anyone to invest any money into this until they play it, and that's the big difference between us and Atari and Ouya," Tallarico said.

Ummmm?

Apparently the 'A-Team' has Dragon Age 4 on the backburner so that would likely be before Mass Effect if that one even happens.

Anthem won't be what traditional Bioware fans want but it will probably be a huge success.

Which means that either way we're probably not seeing traditional Bioware games anytime soon.

Xbox has had its ups and downs like any other company. They're in a good place right now. Game Pass and the Xbox One X is great. All they need to do now is improve their exclusive line-up. That probably won't pay off until Scarlet though.

What platform are you on?

Vive / PC

I already have The Lab, Srirento, Fallout 4, light tracer, redout, and vanishing of Ethan carter.

The Brookhaven Experiment is a fun wave shooter that's only a few bucks. Same with Space Pirate Trainer. Job Simulator is a fun quirly little game too.

I've heard Budget Cuts is good but I haven't played that one yet.

You can also look into playing Oculus games too using a program called Revive. I've heard Lone Echo and Robo Recall are stand outs.

Also it's worth just looking at all the free stuff. They're usually only 10-15 minutes long but they're usually neat little experiences. There's a couple of Star Wars ones for example.

I'm only just getting into PCVR games myself.

I don't know why some manchildren have to be such dicks to people just because they didn't like a movie or character. Get the fuck over yourself. It's like they forget these are people on the other end who have an actual life outside of the 2 hours that 'ruined your childhood'

Why haven't they done some definitive trilogy collection that includes all the DLC. I'd buy that for Switch.

Yeah Obi and Yoda hid away to fight back another day and for the hope that the Skywalker's can fight back.

Like exiled himself because he wanted the Jedi to fade away and because he believed he will never be this legend or solution that people expect him to be. In his mind the Jedi just end up creating more Vader's and Kylo's. He's not exactly wrong.

But he realises at the end that passing down hope to people who need it is far more important and that he can be a legend in his own way.
