2017 has a huge number of quality games though. Probably way more than 1997.
2007 is a mix of both

This causes problems in the case of mixed reviews where an author liked the movie despite being critical of its flaws is erroneously reported as rotten when it should be fresh. The reverse also happens if someone is critical of a movie but praises a specific aspect very highly it might be considered fresh instead of rotten.

What are some examples of this?

Generally a reviewer seems pretty clear if a movie is worth watching or not no? That's generally how I look at it. 97% of critics think the movie is worth watching.

I feel like they've spent most of this phase grooming the audience in getting used to the newer characters just to make sure it will work. We started out phase 3 with what was essentially Captain America vs Iron Man and that's basically been it from them until Avengers (outside of Iron Man having a big supporting role in Homecoming). No Iron Man solo movie at all. Their character arcs seem like they're coming to a close too. Civil War was a big climatic moment for both of them and I think the next Avengers movies will resolve it.

I'm not expecting Iron Man 4 in the next phase either. I think the next Captain America movie will be lead by Bucky (perhaps to see if audiences will accept a transition like that). Avengers 4 will probably end with them passing the torch to the new team (Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Ant-man, Wasp, Spider-man and Doctor Strange).

On top of this they recently got the X-Men and Fantastic Four which I'm guessing has totally shifted whatever their previous plans were for movies after Avengers 4.

There was something different about computers when you'd wait several minutes for them to boot up and everything looked so grey and basic. Back when ripping music to the computer wasn't really a thing either (or at least for me) and you'd just hear the silent computer humming away and the noises from Windows.

I remember getting demo discs and playing games I'd never heard of until they eventually ended up on GOG and I was like "shit I remember that!" Desperados was an example.

Post all the random videos, sounds, games etc. that make you nostalgic! It's fun to vaguely remember something and then go hunting for it on YouTube or Google.

it does with sayori

I get what he's saying.

Sayori's depression conversation was great and impactful. But after that it's written off with freaky meta game stuff. It turns out she was depressed because Monika was messing with the game code. That's not really representing it in a realistic way.

It's more used to support the twist later on. After the suicide that angle of the game is done and Sayori is deleted until the ending.

My entire point is that neither DLC or microtransaction is a catch all term that explains completely different business models.

Picking apart Monster Hunter World doesn't fit your completely binary definition of each of them. Monster Hunter World has microtransactions and it has DLC. It's not one or the other. Generally you can't even have microtransactions without DLC. It's really not complicated.

But it's not a microtransaction, microtransactions have consumability attached to them

That's not a prerequisite at all. Microtransactions started out primarily as weapon skins and cosmetics and then consumable/currency stuff came onto the scene to make more money. Those are the more common microtransactions now but that doesn't mean the definition magically changes.

A microtransaction is a microtransaction. What that microtransaction is can differ greatly.

ZombiePelican posted...
DLC for the most part doesn't you buy it once and that's it

DLC is downloadable content. It doesn't even need to be purchased. It's just more content that's downloaded to the game.

that's itAnd that's what's featured in MHW, you buy the emotes once and move on, you don't keep endlessly buying the same emote over and over

In the case of MWH you're paying for the luxury of using it. Other players can see your emote because they have also downloaded it/it's already in the game. They just can't use it because they didn't pay. It's not even really a DLC purchase in that sense. It's not a purchase you make and then you download it to use like expansion DLC or whatever.

It's a microtransaction.

Buying a weapon skin or a gesture for a couple of bucks is a microtransaction though.

The point of microtransactions is to make money from players who make small payments that accumulate over time. This can be done in a variety of ways. Lootboxes, in-game currency, consumables, cosmetics etc. A game can use one of those or all of those.

Capcom's plan with MHW is to keep releasing gestures and little cosmetic stuff over time. As far as I know they're not releasing any paid expansion content.

DOA5 is an example of a game that is absolutely filled to the brim with cosmetic microtransactions.

How microtransactions are done can differ greatly between games. It's not really an umbrella term that tells you exactly what the game has.
