Do you kill off the character or make them a villain to give in to the audience's spite? Do you try and downplay their annoying qualities and attempt to redeem them? Or do you quietly write them off and never mention them again even though the Internet will be calling for that character's blood 20 years later?

Keep in mind, this is a character that you created.

Give character a heroic last stand death that saves other, more liked characters. Some fans would appreciate the redemption and those that don't irreconcilably hate the character anyways and may be glad he's gone.

You're comparing a character that was never named with about 2 minutes of total screen time to a character that was integral to the PM plot and had a ton of lines . . .

Sure, but I've just never found him that annoying compared to what people say.

Star Wars is full of annoying characters is the point, C-3P0 is supposed to be annoying as well (And that's not to say I hate 3P0 but you get it) and hell, even Luke was whiny in ANH (Power converters!).

Only thing that bugged me was that Lucas used JarJar as an excuse for a bunch of the movies more noticeable shortcomings.

I found Jake Lloyd way more annoying tbqh.

Merchandise sales for the kids. Problem was I think Lucas was a bit out of touch with what comic relief should be at that point. Dumb looking creatures with a silly voice were about 10 years too late.
