Doom scales really well. I remember watching videos of people playing it on Surface tablets. I remember predicting it would be a third party announcement back during the Switch reveal lol.

No idea about Wolfenstein 2 though. Hopefully both end up good and at 60fps. Don't mind if the visuals are a bit muddier.

People watch this stuff to be surprised I think. E3 conferences have the same issue. They'd rather watch a 30 second CGI trailer for an unannounced game than a 5 minute demo.

I'm still legit surprised at the support from Bethesda.

Doom I thought could have been coming. That's not totally shocking.

But I would never have expected a Wolfenstein 2 port.

But still that's 3 games from them in the space of a few months. I don't think Bethesda has ever bothered with a Nintendo console this much.

Ok? Fable 1 was successful enough for Microsoft to buy the studio in the first place. Fable 4 would have been way more successful than Fable the Journey and Fable Legends. Hell anything else by them would have been more successful than that.

Look at this shit man
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-05-12-lionhead-the-inside-story

Staff say after Molyneux left, the studio became more organised, more structured and more professional. And there were incredibly talented people still at the studio, many of whom had worked there for years. But that creative spark had been lost. And, in some ways, Lionhead missed him.

"We didn't really appreciate Peter's greatest trait until he left: keeping Microsoft at bay," says one person who worked at Lionhead right up until its closure.

"Peter could do what he wanted and he could say no to Microsoft about almost anything. He had that power, and when he left we suddenly felt a bit more vulnerable."

As Lionhead changed, so did Microsoft. As head of Xbox, Don Mattrick had installed a new ethos for Microsoft's next console, the Xbox One, that would stray away from the core gamer audience and toward a more casual audience who might watch live telly on their console. After Molyneux left, Phil Harrison, once of Sony, came in to run Microsoft's European operation. The times, they were a changin'.

Games as a service is a somewhat abstract term that seems to mean a game that is designed to be updated continually post release. It's probably free to play. Circa 2012, games as a service was all the rage: League of Legends, the biggest game in the world, is the quintessential game as a service.

According to three separate sources familiar with Lionhead's relationship with Microsoft in 2012, Xbox executives insisted the studio make a new Fable in the games as a service mould. A single-player focused role-playing game would not be allowed, Lionhead was told. "There's no way anybody's going to be making single-player boxed products any more," sources say Microsoft executives told Lionhead. "I want something that's games as a service."

"You make a service game or you get closed down," was how another source with knowledge of the conversations remembers them. "It was the new big push from Microsoft and I heard that all first party studios got a similar message, however some had more of a push back against it."

What a shitty position to be in.

- Microsoft contracted Obsidian for a WRPG for the Xbox One. Microsoft demanded that game has to be next level and something new. Microsoft execs wanted million man raids and they wanted Kinect features. Microsoft cancelled the game and Obsidian nearly closed down but luckily got saved by Kickstarter

wat?

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-09-08-stormlands-and-the-million-man-raid-obsidians-cancelled-xbox-one-exclusive

"We were given a proposal, the million-man raid," Obsidian co-owner and CEO, Feargus Urquhart, tells me. "Conceptually what came from Microsoft was this idea: imagine you're playing The Witcher, maybe with a friend. What happens if at points in time a giant creature pops up that you can see in the distance and it's not just popping up while you're playing, it's popping up for everybody who's playing. You all rush this creature and there's this haze around it, and as you're all rushing through the haze the game is matchmaking you into 40-man raids who are going to fight the creature.

"Then you fight it, but while the creature is being fought all the footage is being recorded up into the cloud. Then at the end we would come up with some kind of intelligent editing thing which would deliver everybody who fought a personalised, edited video of their participation in the raid. That is what was proposed to us."

Clearly a lot of work had been done. What, then, went wrong? There was a disconnect, a juxtaposition between a dreaming Microsoft on one hand and an Obsidian who had to realise the ideas on the other. One moment Obsidian was talking to a Microsoft executive producer about doing co-op, the next minute a new executive producer was pitching million-man raids. "We look at something like that and it's like, 'Holy Jesus!'" says Urquhart.

But it's important to point out Obsidian never took the million-man raid idea literally, and never believed Microsoft, as ambitious as it was, meant it that way. "This happens with everything," he says. "We do this when we're talking to our people, we give them crazy ideas. The goal was to inspire us to come up with not that, but inspire us to think about how to incorporate all of these elements." It's like the story of the Sony boss running downstairs to the inventors' lair with a pack of playing cards and declaring, "I want a tape player I can stick headphones into that's this big!" and in doing so triggering the creation of the iconic Walkman.

Nevertheless the demands from Microsoft to reinvent the wheel were high. Kotaku writer Jason Schreier talks about Kinect-powered verbal haggling in Stormlands, in his new book Blood, Sweat and Pixels, which I heartily recommend. Chris Parker and Feargus Urquhart don't recall that exact feature when I talk to them but concede there were so many ideas it may well have been one. Ideas piled upon ideas and all the time the immovable deadline to be ready for Xbox One launch loomed closer.

Microsoft's answer? Throw more resources at it. "At some point Microsoft was saying 'maybe this needs to be an even bigger game'," Urquhart says. "'Maybe we just need to add a bunch more people onto it - maybe we don't have enough people to prototype all these crazy ideas we have.' Well no, actually that sounds terrifying, that sounds like a really bad idea for us to do."

The article has more info.

They f***ed over Swery65's D4 with their change in attitude toward the Kinect. Didn't even attempt to advertise the game or even let people know a release date. Swery himself had to tweet the date like a week before release because even he wasn't sure.

Oh yeah I forgot all about that. I liked D4 too. It seems like they burnt all of their bridges with partnerships they've made this gen. Swery, Remedy, Respawn, Obsidian, Platinum etc. Studios who partner up with Nintendo and Sony generally stick around.

halomonkey1_3_5 posted...
yeah idk how you can paint MS as a greedy publisher when they drop so much money on projects that just wind up canceled for no apparent reason

they're more impressively incompetent than greedy, IMO

I guess so. Phantom Dust and Stormlands was due to Microsoft demanding more stuff while also refusing to put any more money into it.

So I suppose it's a mix of both. Probably too many people making calls at Microsoft who don't really understand game development.

- Literally let their golden goose Bungie leave when they didn't want to work on Halo anymore

- Bought out Ensemble due to their success with Age of Empires. Eventually Ensemble wanted to start making other games but Microsoft weren't interested. Until they pitched an RTS for the Xbox 360 which was a new IP. Microsoft said they'd only approve it if they used the Halo IP. Ensemble had to scrap a lot of their work to accommodate this and a lot of the staff weren't happy (Bungie also weren't thrilled with another studio working on Halo). Microsoft closed down Ensemble right before Halo Wars released

- Lionhead wanted to work on Fable 4. Microsoft wanted them to work on a Kinect game so they did. When they finished they expected to work on Fable 4. Microsoft told them they're gonna be working on a Games as a Service title instead. Microsoft closed them down during development

- Microsoft approved a Phantom Dust reboot with a new studio called Darkside. They gave them a $5 million budget for a multiplayer only game. Microsoft came back and demanded a single player campaign as well. Darkside attempted to make the game with the same budget. Microsoft kept demanding more features and wanted a longer campaign. Darkside eventually added for more money ($2 more million). Microsoft declined and cancelled. The studio closed down.

- We don't know the story about Scalebound. But it's likely similar to the above two stories.

- Microsoft cancelled a new IP by Black Tusk Studios. Rebranded them to The Coalition and forced them to work on Gears of War.

What happened to this company? It seems like once they hit 2010 they just became a nightmare publisher who only solely care about money. When was the last time Microsoft legit had good stories about them? It's been bad for a long time. These stories have been way too common with them.

As for the second example, how is an owner supposed to know if someone is gay without the patrons explicitly stating so? That being the case, a wedding cake without mentioning they are gay would never be an issue, even if the couple was "flamboyantly" gay.

Two men or women ordering a wedding cake together and looking up designs seems sorta obvious no? Do you think he'd just overlook that?

If religion was his thing then he would have to be checking the purpose for each cake ordered right? Like he would need to know I'm not ordering a wedding cake for a porno. I'm under the belief that what I use any of his cakes for is pretty irrelevant. Do you disagree?

Their religous beliefs are that gay weddings shouldn't exist, not that gay people shouldn't exist.

Try asking for a cake with a cow on top at an Indian bakery or a pig at a Jewish/Muslim bakery. Or two male figurines at a Jewish/Muslim bakery. They're allowed to not make a specific cake, but there's plenty of other options they will be more than happy for you to choose from.

The bakery often doesn't even make the cake toppers though. I supplied my own for my wedding.

I haven't read anywhere that this is where the dispute happened. Do you have a link? The statement I found was;
The legal fight broke out in 2012 when Phillips told gay couple David Mullins and Charlie Craig that because of his Christian beliefs, his store’s policy was to deny service to customers wanting to purchase cakes to celebrate a same-sex wedding.

Right, it's because they don't want to put 2 male figurines on a cake. The gay couple can get a million other different cake combinations and the owner will make it because it is illegal to not sell to a person because they are gay.

Finally got Ending E. I liked it. Great game.

Not sure I understood everything
Was the red eye virus the machine network (that girl in the red jacket) or something else? They used it to wipe out YorHa but plenty of machines were infected by it too. Did this virus infect Eve at the end of Ending A?

I'm not sure why the machines wanted to kill Pascal's village too. Because he was pacifist? Because they wanted to be like humans and have in-fighting? I thought more was gonna be explained with that machine network thing but it still seemed pretty vague. Did they even really have a goal throughout the game? It seemed like they kept the androids around to have someone to fight and after that they decided to launch a rocket to the moon with their data to find a better purpose. Was that it? Was Adam and Eve just an attempt by the machines to create a new human race?
