See, I was raised Southern Baptist (I got baptized twice because I didn't think the first time was good enough; I was young). I'm not Southern Baptist anymore and I don't go to church. I try to live my life spiritually, not religiously, in the ways taught by Jesus (I try anyway).

See, in Christianity, I was taught that that was the problem between Christians and Jews. That Jews believed in a Messiah, then Jesus comes along and people said well here's the Messiah. And if you didn't believe Jesus was the Messiah, then you stayed Jewish, otherwise you'd be Christian.

Not really. Messianic Jews do believe in a new return of the Kingdom of David, and the arrival of Mach'iah (the Messiah).
But again, the more traditional Judaism usually teaches that a life well lived and full of mitzvot (good actions, and helping others) is its own reward, and a selfish, petty life, its own punishment.

What's the motivation to help others? If being selfish makes you happy, how is it a punishment? (real question, no disrespect)

Thanks for that insight. I actually did read something about there being a brief mention of that reference while I was casually researching. I think it's in the book of Isiah.

Then I went to look it up and I learned that it's a complicated notion that not all Jews agree on. I heard before that Jews don't believe in Hell, but no Afterlife at all? I'm like, what's the point of the religion then?

Life being pointless can honestly help you deal with negative aspects in your life, because they don't matter. Existential dread and nothingness? Doesn't matter.

Those are some good points, but it does matter a bit. Like, you wouldn't go to prison and say, "Oh well, it doesn't matter."
