I definitely get annoyed with the commentary. Striker is so try-hard it's painful. dunno if that gets better once the "fuck you WWE" feeling settles. Vampiro is ok, but he can't seem to decide if he's a face or heel.

Striker can be obnoxious at time, but at least he has passion and seems to genuinely care about the matches he's calling, unlike certain WWE announcers.

While other promotions like Ring Of Honor or New Japan Pro Wrestling embrace trying to be more realistic, Lucha Underground goes the opposite direction and throws realism out the window. It's more like a wrestling promotion meets a TV drama meets a Mortal Kombat game, and I think they make it work. Plus, the production values are fantastic, both in the ring and in the backstage segments. It's a Robert Rodriguez production, after all.

I was the same way at first, but I got used to the newer names (Ml Muertes is my current favorite) and enjoyed some of the former WWE talent that joins in the later seasons. PJ Black (formerly Justin Gabriel in WWE), Big Ryck (formerly Ezekiel Jackson in WWE), Alberto El Patron (formerly Alberto Del Rio in WWE), Chavo Guerrero, and even Rey Mysterio have all shown up and had pretty great matches with the Lucha Underground regulars.

Yes, you guys should definitely watch it. Give it at least until the first Ultima Lucha show at the end of season 1, or preferably the Aztec Warfare match in the middle of season 2. If you're not hooked by then, Lucha Underground isn't the right one for you.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is boxing Conor McGregor this weekend, and the whole thing is completely awesome. While the traditionalist fight press sees this simply as a capitalist exercise with an inevitable result and no titles on the line, that’s not exactly the case—at least not officially, that is.

Back in 1998, what was then known as the World Wrestling Federation embarked on an adventure called Brawl For All. As originally envisioned, this would be a tournament featuring pro wrestlers taking part in legitimate no-holds-barred fighting, or at least something resembling what MMA was at the time. That idea went out the window when martial artist and pro wrestler Steve Blackman asked if kicks to the knee would be legal; instead, the rules were changed so that the tournament would feature pro wrestlers in (still legitimate) Toughman-style contests that also featured takedowns and an esoteric scoring system. The tournament’s eventual winner was journeyman tag-team wrestler Bart Gunn, who had Toughman experience and a powerful left hand; he dropped his next fight to Butterbean, the gimmick super-heavyweight boxer who made a name as a toughman competitor himself.

Butterbean soon ventured into MMA, losing to grappling wizard and general oddball Genki Sudo. And if you track who beat who from there, the lineal Brawl For All title ends up in the hands of ... Conor McGregor, who defeated Dustin Poirier for it before losing it to Nate Diaz and then regaining it in their rematch. There are no stakes more perfect for this momentous exhibition of sweet science than these.

On Saturday, barring some sort of well-played con, Mayweather will win, taking one of McGregor’s two prestigious lineal titles. (McGregor is also the lineal lightweight MMA champion, at least as tracked by Fight Matrix). That this of all fights happens to have this half-real, half-imaginary title on the line is incredibly appropriate … especially since Mauro Ranallo, the voice of Showtime boxing who’s also a WWE announcer, will be calling the action.

And on top of all that? At Wednesday’s press conference for Mayweather-McGregor, the World Boxing Council introduced a new “WBC Money Belt” to be awarded to the winner. Made with 300 emeralds, 600 sapphires, and 3,360 diamonds laid in 1.5 kilograms of 24-karat gold on an alligator skin strap, it’s hard to see it and not think of “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase’s Million Dollar Championship belt from the WWF. The one other thing that could make this spectacle more perfect, more of a spectacle, and more pro wrestling-like has actually happened.

Too bad it’s only the second most prestigious title at stake.

100% agreed. Anyone who votes Ortiz in but not Bonds/Clemens deserves to have their hall of fame voting privileges revoked. Plus, Edgar Martinez is getting screwed over in this too. The voters who penalized him for being a full-time DH but end up voting for Ortiz should also get their voting privileges revoked.

This. The only possible "good" Nazi is one who was forced into service during WW2 against their will by higher-ups threatening to harm them or their loved ones. Even Nazi scientists who made scientific/medical breakthroughs that benefited humankind overall were still evil people if they did so while willingly working to help the Nazi regime.

It's 100% impossible to be a "good" Nazi in this day and age, with 80 years of history and hindsight to look back on their atrocities.

If anything, Dana White let Vince McMahon know before sunday night that the Jones fight was no longer a possibility. With how much WWE was hyping up the stipulation that Lesnar would leave the company if he lost the WWE Universal title at Summerslam, especially with the specter of the Jones fight looming over it, there was no way he would have retained unless Vince knew for sure that fight wasn't happening.

eh. I don't see a problem with the occasional heel vs heel feud. and I definitely don't have a problem getting away from the strict face / heel dynamic altogether (not that I think that's happening here).

But even in a heel vs heel feud, you have to give the fans a (kayfabe) reason to cheer for one of them over the other or a lot of the fans won't care who wins. That usually means temporarily turning one of them into less of a heel. Not necessarily face or tweener, just less of a heel than their opponent.

AoP were more faces, mostly cause their heel character is like a Brock Lesnar heel.

SAnitY was more over though.

I thought that at the beginning because faces don't usually use a 4-on-2 numbers game to cheat and gain an advantage like SAnitY did. But then I saw the pop that SAnitY got, and then I saw the beatdown they took after the match, and that made me think they might have been the faces.

I want Asuka's reign to continue for at least a couple more weeks, and that means her beating Ember Moon tonight. She very recently hit 500 days as champ, and if she reaches 524 days, she officially has the longest title run of any kind since the peak of Hulkamania. Only Lex Luger (who held the WCW United States Championship for 523 days at one point) has had a longer title run since Hogan's 4-year reign of terror. After Asuka passes that milestone, then she can drop the title and get called up.

I'm fine with either Roode or McIntyre winning the NXT Championship match as long as it's a great match, and whoever loses should be called up to the main roster pretty soon. I'd slightly prefer McIntyre winning and Roode getting the call-up though.

As long as she doesn't vacate the title until a few weeks after tonight, then that works. Have Asuka refuse treatment and try to work injured for the next week or two, but then NXT's GM (Regal?) has to reluctantly force her to vacate the title "for her own good". I really want her to pass that 523-day milestone that I mentioned before.
