God I hope we never do. As much as a hassle as paper ballots are, they are far harder to tamper with.

Eh, Republicans found it pretty easy to just throw paper ballots away in the 2018 midterms.

Throwing out paper ballots does require coordination to pull off. An electronic voting machine only requires 1 person to change a bunch of votes at once.

Also going full electronic means each device is sending their votes electronically to a centralized machine. Which creates a single point of failure.

Editing a bunch of paper ballots and destroying a bunch of paper ballots are far harder to accomplish successfully than through digital means.

Electronic voting doesn't have to be sent to a single centralized machine. Ideally you'd set up redundancy and replication between redundant machines to avoid having a single point of failure.

Those kinds of systems are expensive and largely only useful for asynchronous updates where changes can be made while a change is being processed.

In the US you might see each district tally up their district tallies and report that count. But there's still going to a far easier attack vector.

Also this doesn't even touch on the software aspect.

Tom Scott did a pretty good video on the issues with electronic voting.

I'd rather trust a group of people counting up the votes than software that could be hacked. Also pure electronic voting doesn't leave a trail so harder to verify in the case of needing a recount.

The most I'm okay with is what my area does. And that's you fill out a paper ballot and the insert into a machine like a scantron. The machine can do a quick count and if you need to go back and verify you have a paper trail.

What's also expensive is people spending days or weeks counting paper ballots. Electronic voting can very easily leave a trail for verification purposes. It just has to be designed to leave said trail.

Ahh, this is really cool.

~75k worth of Cisco network equipment for a new floor
I'm doing the setup by myself.
Got all the switches racked
Got all the extra power supplies in
Got the stacking cables inserted.
Got the switch stack numbering straight
Got the switch stack on the network
Got some of the patching done

Working on upgrading the software on the switches to match everywhere else.

In hindsight, it was a mistake to set up the UPS by myself. The extra battery is 174 pounds. I accidentally let it rest on my left big toe, and now my toe hurts when it needs to bend a lot.

They were apparently trying to fix a crack in the concrete and ended up destroying fiber lines from AT&T, Grande, and Spectrum. They even destroyed the conduit the fiber goes through, so they can't even run more fiber through the same path until they bore a new hole.

Their boring drill also got stuck in the attempt to drill a new hole underground.

It's gonna be a long day.

... Conservatives

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/13/us/politics/butina-guilty.html

WASHINGTON To the conservative Americans she courted, Maria Butina was the right kind of Russian.

She loved guns and the church and networking with top officials in the National Rifle Association. She schmoozed with Republican presidential candidates, and became a supporter of Donald J. Trump. She spent Thanksgiving at a congressmans country house, took a Trump campaign aide to see the rock band Styx and helped a Rockefeller heir organize friendship dinners with influential Washingtonians.

On Thursday, Ms. Butina, 30, pleaded guilty to a single charge of conspiring to act as a foreign agent in a deal with federal prosecutors. In doing so, she acknowledged that her activities were motivated by more than mere personal conviction.

As part of the deal, Ms. Butina admitted to being involved in an organized effort, backed by Russian officials, to open up unofficial lines of communication with influential Americans in the N.R.A. and in the Republican Party, and to win them over to the idea of Russia as a friend, not a foe.

Sure is interesting, all the stuff these investigations have uncovered.

The more I learned about networking the more amazed I became that the internet works at all.

In my experience, the toughest part of it all is dealing with service providers in China. Years ago, I was able to figure out that CITIC was causing global routing loops for thousands of prefixes. Getting them to fix that (at least for the particular prefix I was concerned about) was a 4 day affair.

And then recently some Nigerian ISP broke global routing for Google-destined traffic by advertising the wrong prefixes.
