Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told judges in a Jerusalem court on Monday that he is innocent of corruption charges before abruptly standing, saying "thank you very much" and leaving with his motorcade.

Netanyahu quit the courtroom some 20 minutes after the start of Monday mornings hearing, which continued on without him. The sessions kick-started the second phase of a precedent-setting legal procedure, which, for the first time, involves the indictment of an Israeli prime minister while still in office and campaigning for elections in the coming weeks the fourth in two years.

Gayil Talshir, a political scientist at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said the Jerusalem District Courtroom where the trial is taking place is a humiliating departure for Netanyahus usual setting in front of the flag of Israel, and in a position of power.

But he came by himself, without family members or minister loyalists. He is trying to belittle the situation, she said.

On Sunday, Netanyahu posted a video to his Facebook page instructing his supporters not to demonstrate outside the heavily guarded Jerusalem courtroom, saying that it was a health risk as coronavirus cases continue to soar and because everyone already sees that the witch-hunt against me is crumbling, everyone understands that this is a transparent attempt to overthrow a strong prime minister from the Right.

Only one pro-Netanyahu demonstrator arrived to express support on Monday morning, across from some 200 anti-Netanyahu protesters hoisting signs reading Crime Minister and calling on him to resign.

Since the trial formally began last May, Netanyahu has maintained his innocence and decried the case against him as part of a politically motivated conspiracy to oust him from power.

Netanyahu was originally due in court on Jan. 13 to formally respond to the charges, but the hearing was delayed by his decision to implement a month-long, nationwide coronavirus lockdown amid soaring infection rates. Critics said that Netanyahu had ignored suggestions in the past by health officials to lock down cities with high infection rates and that this time it was a political maneuver to delay the trial.

Netanyahus attorney on Monday attempted to defer the proceedings further on the claims of technicalities that constituted a violation of basic law, an argument the judges dismissed.

While his attorney spoke, Netanyahu jotted notes on a yellow legal pad, coughed several times into his black mask, removed his mask to drink water and crossed his arms across his chest.

He spoke only twice: to confirm his attorneys response to the charges and then, after about 20 minutes, to say thank you very much to the courtroom before departing with his motorcade.

In recent days, Netanyahu has been uncharacteristically quiet on his trial, though his political allies have taken to social media and to the press to advocate prolonging the trial and to avoid its politicization.

Knesset Speaker Yariv Lavin, a Netanyahu supporter, on Sunday called on the court to postpone Mondays hearing until after the March 23 elections, saying that going forward with the schedule would amount to the judicial system lending a hand to blatant meddling in the elections.

In Israel Hayom, a free newspaper and unofficial mouthpiece for Netanyahu, journalist Amnon Lord called the trial a pseudo-legal performance for public consumption and added that whatever happens, the State Attorneys Office is ready with a cast of hundreds, a list of 338 witnesses, enough people to remake Ben Hur.

Netanyahu was charged with bribery, fraud and breach of trust in Case 4000, in which he is accused of granting illegal favors to a telecom giant and news website owner in exchange for positive coverage of the prime minister and his family.

Netanyahu also faces charges of fraud and breach of trust in Case 1000, in which he is suspected of illicitly accepting about $200,000 in cigars, champagne and other gifts from the Hollywood-based Israeli movie mogul Arnon Milchan and from Australian billionaire magnate James Packer.

Netanyahus Likud still maintains a lead in the most recently published opinion polls; however, he will have to contend with new rivals from the right, as well as accusations that he has been mishandling the public health crisis and the economic consequences of the pandemic, to avoid standing trial.

While Israel, which has a population of about 9 million, is among the leaders in administering vaccines, it continues to record high numbers of deaths and infection rates and has the highest number of lockdown days in the world.

This has been a difficult day for everyone, a difficult day for the State of Israel, said Gideon Saar, a right-wing politician challenging Netanyahu, in response to the trial. The judicial process should be conducted without political intervention and any kind of political pressure.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/ron-wright-covid-texas-republican-b1799276.html

Texas Republican representative Ron Wright, who previously battled cancer, has died at the age of 67 after testing positive for coronavirus.

Mr Wright, who was elected to represent Texas's 6th congressional district in 2018, tested positive for Covid-19 in early January, following the Capitol riots.

At the time of his diagnosis, Mr Wright confirmed that he was experiencing "minor symptoms", but his campaign announced on Monday that he had died following his battle with Covid-19.

He died just one month after Louisiana congressman-elect Luke Letlow passed away following Covid-19 complications, and is the first sitting member of the House to die of coronavirus.

Congressman Wright will be remembered as a constitutional conservative. He was a statesman, not an ideologue, a statement released by Mr Wright's office on Monday read.

Ron and Susan dedicated their lives to fighting for individual freedom, Texas values, and above all, the lives of the unborn," it added.

Mr Wright announced in July 2019 that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer, and was hospitalised in September 2020 with complications relating to his treatment.

His campaign said that despite his cancer diagnosis, Mr Wright "had kept a rigorous work schedule on the floor of the US House of Representatives and at home in Texas Congressional District 6."

He was a fixture in Texas politics, having served as Arlington mayor pro tempore between 2004 to 2008 and as the chief of staff to former representative Joe Barton between 2009 to 2011.

He later succeeded his former boss in the role as the representative for the 6th congressional district, when he was elected in 2018 and again in November 2020.

According to the Texas Tribune, Mr Wright is survived by his wife Susan, the couple's three children and nine grandchildren.

His campaign team said that his wife was by his side when he died, adding: "He is now in the presence of their Lord and Saviour."

https://www.businessinsider.com/gop-senator-johnson-claims-pelosi-blame-capitol-riot-2021-2

Republican Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin claimed on Sunday that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and not President Donald Trump was to blame for the riot at the US Capitol.

Johnson made the accusation in an interview with the Fox News host Maria Bartiromo in which he discussed Trump's second impeachment trial, due to begin on Tuesday.

He didn't cite any evidence, saying only that he was "suspicious."

Trump was impeached for the second time on January 13. House lawmakers charged him with inciting an insurrection in a speech he delivered to supporters before they attacked the Capitol.

The violence prompted the evacuation of lawmakers who were certifying electoral votes. The insurrection left five people dead.

While a few Republicans have spoken out against Trump, others have steadfastly defended him one element of that has been attempting to shift the blame elsewhere.

Seeking to defend Trump, Johnson suggested, without evidence, that the impeachment was part of a plot to divert attention from Pelosi.

https://twitter.com/atrupar/status/1358440762564898819

"Is this another diversionary operation? Is this meant to deflect away from potentially what the speaker knew and when she knew it?" Johnson said. "I don't know, but I'm suspicious."

Mark Meadows, the former White House chief of staff, also tried to shift the blame for the riot away from Trump on the network on Sunday.

https://twitter.com/Acyn/status/1358433805728575491

Meadows said that the US Capitol Police "do a tremendous job, but they need to be empowered to do that job, and there were plenty of assets there to assist them in their efforts."

"And some of those decisions weren't made appropriately, in my opinion, and those decisions did not come from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue it came from the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue," he continued, referring to the Capitol.

Supporters of Trump on social media have baselessly blamed Pelosi for the breach. But the House speaker has no role in day-to-day policing operations of the Capitol, The Associated Press reported in a fact-check of the claims.

"No one person oversees USCP the oversight apparatus includes representation from the Architect of the Capitol, the House and Senate Sergeants at Arms, as well as committees from both Houses of Congress," Bee Barnett, the director of communications and programs for the US Capitol Historical Society, told the news agency.

In congressional testimony in January, acting Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman apologized to lawmakers for the security lapse that allowed Trump supporters to breach the Capitol.

She took charge of the law-enforcement agency days after the attack, which had prompted the resignation of chief Steven Sund.

In a video last week, Pittman said the department was conducting a full review of security at the Capitol complex.

Bucs had a really rough time out of the gate during their first 20 years, which included just 2 wins in their first 2 years. Over the last 25 years, while they arent a winning club, theyre pretty close to .500:

First 20 years for the Bucs = 94 - 214 - 1 (30.6%)

Bucs after first 20 years = 184 - 216 (46.0%)

46% still leaves them as the 8th-worst team all-time and they'd still be the worst team with multiple Super Bowl wins (Washington at .499 is the only other team with multiple wins and below .500 all-time).

British actor Jameela Jamil has shared a message on the online harassment she has been facing since speaking up about the farmers' protests in India. Jameela, who is the star of the hit show, The Good Place, said she has been regularly speaking about the protest and has been getting rape and death threats online for it.

"I have *repeatedly* spoken about the farmers in india over the past few months and what is happening there at the moment, but each time I do I am met with death and rape threats. so while you are pressuring me in my dms please keep in mind that i am a human being who has some limitations as to what i can handle," she wrote in a message on Instagram on Friday.

"I do however maintain. my solidarity is of course with the farmers in India and everyone fighting for their rights during this protest. I hope you are also pressuring men to speak on this subject too as they are far less likely to be attacked the way women in the public eye are. To everyone reading this. As I've asked many times before, please read about what's happening," she added.

Responding to her comment, Four Weddings and a Funeral star Andie Macdowell wrote, "Went to India for my first time last year right before coronavirus. I am watching. don't know why people are threatening you ? You can block those people."

On Saturday, Oscar-winning actor Susan Sarandon had also voiced her support towards the farmers, who are protesting against the new farm laws by the central government. "Standing in solidarity with the #FarmersProtest in India. Read about who they are and why they're protesting below," she wrote in her tweet.

Before them, pop star Rihanna had also tweeted about the protest, raising awareness about it on Twitter. Later, Swedish activist Greta Thunberg also extended her support to the farmers' cause.

On Wednesday, a host of Bollywood celebrities, including Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Karan Johar, Ekta Kapoor and Suniel Shetty, put out similar statements about the ongoing farmers' protest with the hashtag 'India against propaganda'.

Bio1590

https://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/2421

In the past 24 hours, House Republicans made it abundantly clear where their allegiances lie: with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, conspiracy theorists and QAnon believers. From their standing ovation for Rep. Greene to their votes this afternoon against punishing her for spreading QAnon, 9-11, anti-Semitic and school shooting conspiracy theories.

Tonight, nearly 95 percent of House Republicans put partisanship ahead of principle and voted against holding Rep. Greene accountable for her unacceptable, violence-endorsing rhetoric. Only 11 of the 211 GOP Members voted to remove Rep. Greene from her committee assignments.

But, not only are Republicans in the House refusing to hold Rep. Greene accountable, they are actively celebrating her dangerous behavior and views. Last night, at the meeting where Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Q-CA) announced he would take no action to sanction QAnon adherent Marjorie Taylor Greene, half of the House Republican Conference behind closed doors gave a standing ovation to the anti-Semitic, shooting survivor-harassing, 9/11 Truther Greene.

Given Greenes refusal to publicly apologize for any of her violent conspiracy theories, McCarthy deserves to be asked: what were his members clapping for?

Were House Republicans applauding Greenes stated support for QAnon?

Were House Republicans applauding her racist, Islamophobic and anti-Semitic statements?

Were House Republicans applauding her 9/11 Trutherism?

Were House Republicans applauding her harassment of gun violence survivors?

Were House Republicans applauding her calls for executing Democratic members of Congress?

Were House Republicans applauding her insistence that the Sandy Hook shooting was a false flag operation and that the Las Vegas shooting was staged?

McCarthys failure to lead his party and House Republicans refusal to reject QAnon adherents has effectively handed the keys to the conference over to Greene. Unfortunately, this is just the latest step by House Republicans on a slippery slope towards conspiracism and intolerance, as evidenced by their shameful votes on January 6th when nearly 60 percent of their conference voted to overturn the results of the 2020 election and throw out the will of voters even AFTER the deadly insurrection.
