So I went back and the guy told me they have to check first because they can't sell me their 'display' copy of the case. Which doesn't make sense because majority of their used games have the gamestop boxes. Either way though they had one for me. I think I just need to stop going to the Gamestop closest to me. There's one slightly further out that has been much more helpful

Yeah they've had some assholes working at mine as well. I remember one guy (I think he was new) was literally mocking my voice when I went in there. Then he followed up by continuously swiping my card in the credit machine so hard it scratched my card up. Thankfully I'm pretty sure the dude was fired shortly after.

Well that's relief I'll probably take it back after dinner. I just tend to not trust gamestop after they've screwed me over with some of their really dumb store policies. I also think I was a little worried mostly because they've probably been busy/getting yelled at all day.

Was picking up some games with some Christmas money and I grabbed a copy of Yoshi's Woolly World. Now when I shop at Gamestop I won't buy the game if they don't have the actual boxart/a working case cause at that point I might as well buy new off amazon or get it digitally. Anyway I buy the game along with several others and head out to the car, just to find out that they switched the case for a broken one with no box art. Like wtf? Not only do I feel like it's blatant false advertising, but it's just a shitty way to treat your customer base. Honestly if it wasn't for the fact that I don't like being and asshole/ it probably being an internal policy that the employees have no control over. I would've take it back and demanded a refund. So instead I'm going to come here and bitch about it.

Also would love to hear other Gamestop stories cause I know it tends to do shit like this pretty consistently

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018)

Time for some hype!

Roster
I'm going to go over each newcomer individually.

Inkling
Of all the newcomers I feel like the Inkling is the most forgotten (excluding the Echo fighters that is) which is a shame, because I'm so ready to play as them. Not only do they have cool gameplay mechanics with their bonus damage for inked opponents, but I love both Splatoon games they are some of the most fun games I've played in recent memory.

Ridley
Ok so I never bought into the Ridley hype, I was definitely in the he's too big camp. And I'd be lying if I thought he looked magically better in Ultimate, but I will say I'm incredibly happy Metroid got finally got another rep and I love me some villains. So while I can't say I 100% agree with his inclusion. I'm happy for some more Smash diversity and will probably play as him plenty.

Simon Belmont
Simon is one of those characters that I always thought would be a great inclusion. His franchise was one of the big classic Nintendo franchises, he's got a really cool unique moveset and wow Sakurai went all out with his stage and the music. Really great stuff, and as far as Richter goes, I think he's a little out of left field, but I guess it gives us an excuse to get more of that great SotN music.

King K. Rool
Easily my favorite of the newcomers, I've been wanting him so bad since Brawl. As I said with Ridley more villains are always welcome and we get another DK rep! That aside I think K. Rool's design is really cool, plus he has an awesome moveset that is just a flat out love letter to his games. Plus that Gangplank Galleon remix is dope! I can't wait to play him.

Isabelle
So this is where my hype kinda drops off. Never really got into New Leaf myself, but even my gf who's addicted to it doesn't like her that much. Plus her moveset seems almost an Echo of the Villager? But shes not considered one? Idk I know she has fans and I'm happy for them, but she doesn't really do much for me.

Incineroar
I don't think he's a bad choice, just a boring one. We've gotten a new Pokemon each game and I've just reached a point where if they're going to do that let's see a crazy one. Pull a Pokken and give me Chandelure! As a side note that topic with the fan art has warmed me up to him a little bit. I think what hurt his reveal the most for me was that he was the final trailer and well yeah pretty underwhelming. Thankfully we got one more character..

Piranha Plant
HELL YES! I don't care that Mario has a ton of reps already, I don't care that plenty of other cool characters still aren't playable. Sakurai has always done a great job of surprising us with random ass characters and Piranha Plant beats them all, plus he looks like a lot of fun to play! Let's go!

Echo Fighters
Really happy they finally just came clean about the clones and went all out with it, sure there's some odd ones they didn't include (really surprised about no Shadow), but I think it's great to fatten up the roster with clones that are still unique characters.

DLC Fighters
Where do I even begin? There's so many I want to see. My number 1 is probably Banjo and Kazooie, Microsoft said they're free to use them so it's just a matter of going for it. I think Isaac Waluigi and Skull Kid would be great if they could find a way workaround to them being ATs. Finally I think us getting Geno would be really cool and out of nowhere, but with the lack of FF content so far, I'm not expecting too much on that front.

I actually did a little more research on the fighter ballot and apparently there's some evidence of them deciding her inclusion two weeks after the ballot. I think Nintendo wanted to use a 3rd party character for the final DLC and then save the high ranking 1st party characters for Ultimate. Again it's really just a theory, I just wish Nintendo was a little more transparent with the results. Either way I never thought of it as a huge detriment to the game. I just thought it was a fun little bit to include in the review

I couldn't disagree more about the 3DS review. Having smash available as a portable title is amazing ( another reason why Ultimate will rock so much), and I still play it nowadays even more often than the Wii U version since I can take it anywhere. It's great to get a couple games going when out with friends, and it's nice when waiting in line at a convention or something to simply pull out the 3DS and get the games of Smash going with strangers. Saying it has no reason to exist is really harsh. A portable Smash Bros. game should always be an option imo

That's actually something that completely slipped my mind. I never really use my 3DS outside of home, so I guess it never really occurred to me lol. My apologies, I do think that review got a little skewed due to my own personal disappointments with both parts to Smash 4

And as far as that Smash poll goes I'm calling bullshit, it seems a little to convenient that a character Nintendo took a big gamble on won a popularity poll for any Smash character?

I recall Nintendo saying that Bayonetta won out of the "realizable characters" or something along those lines, which seems believable to me personally.

Yeah I just got the vibe they were using that term loosely. Like I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo/Sakurai had a list of viable characters they wanted to push/make move sets for and only used that list. Take Ridley for example, I imagine if he won the poll. They'd say well he's already a stage hazard/too big so who's the next one on the list. Idk maybe I'm crazy, but it just always felt a little fishy to me. Either way I think Bayo turned out great and im happy that she became a lot more well known because of it

Super Smash Bros. for Wii-U (2014)

Gameplay
If the 3DS had amazingly unbalanced gameplay, the final Wii U version had the most balanced gameplay in the franchise. It's the best way to get into the competitive Smash scene, hell even I got into playing For Glory. It's really nice to see the series finally reach this point where everyone can play and have a good time.

Roster
Since I covered my thoughts on the roster on the 3DS review already I'm going to talk about the DLC characters and wow are they great! Not only did we get huge fan favorites like Mewtwo, Lucas and Roy. But we got some great 3rd party characters too all of which had some really creative move sets, sure it led to Cloud and Bayonetta being super OP, but they're inclusion was awesome nonetheless. Now I will say there were some slight frustrations about it. Namely Corrin and Bayonetta, I'm honestly fine with six FE characters, but come on let's get some variety, if they were dead set on Fates characters I think Azura would've been a much cooler pick. And as far as that Smash poll goes I'm calling bullshit, it seems a little to convenient that a character Nintendo took a big gamble on won a popularity poll for any Smash character? But personal wants and conspiracy theories aside, they both wound up being fun conclusions and Smash 4 still ended with a great roster.

Single Player
Hahahahahaha. Aside from the standard there's pretty much nothing and even those aren't relevant cause they were in the 3DS version. So the only real new content was Master/Crazy Orders and well uh..... Smash Tour yeeeaaaah. I really didnt spend much time play this one.

Bonus Content
So I pretty much covered this in Single Player, but there's pretty much nothing. I will say however unlike the 3DS version I spent a lot of time listening to the music player. A lot of these remixes are awesome! While were on the subject of artistic aspects. This game looks gorgeous, Smash in HD is great.

Overall
So Smash 4 made a lot of advancements to the franchise. It stopped the divide between fans debating the competitive format, added a ton of really cool newcomers and had some great technical advancements. Unfortunately I think the lack of content makes them pretty weak as Smash games. They're still a great pair of video games, but I've just come to expect a little more from Smash at this point. Now I will say the best think Smash 4 has done is it paved the way for Ultimate to be the best Smash game. It took care of all the balancing and upgrading so plenty of time can be spent expanding the next entry, needless to say I'm hyped, but I'm going to get into that next time.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS (2014)

Gameplay
When Smash 3DS first hit it was crazy! The game was crazy unbalanced and it was blast, granted after a couple of updates it started to calm down and the Wii U version was out before too long which balanced the game even more, but honestly the Wii U version completely invalidated the 3DS version to a point where it doesnt even matter. I personally think it would've been really cool if the game was kept really unbalanced so it could be an alternative way to play online. That way the game still has a purpose amongst the other Smash games.

Roster
The build up to this game was filled to the brim with hype. Every new character got announced via a cinematic trailer that really hyped up all the characters even if you didnt have an interest in them initially. You know what though even without the trailers these are some damn good picks so many new franchises get reps making it feel like a more complete roster. The returning characters mostly get revamps as well, which gave a lot of people the chance to retry some characters they might not have liked prior. Now as great as a lot of this is, some of these roster cuts are ridiculous. The worst being the Ice Climbers, they flat out got jipped. The only reason they were cut was because they wouldnt work on the 3DS. Frankly it makes me question if splitting the game into two versions was even worth it, but I'll get more into that when I get to the overall section. Oh yeah there's also the DLC characters but I'm saving them for the next review

Single Player
3DS' premiere mode is Smash Run and while technically it is multiplayer, you play most of it by yourself, so I'm counting it here. Smash Run is a blast though! Probably one of if not the best Smash Mode to date. Theres a ton of references to other franchises, it has a lot smoother platforming than SSE and the power ups make each playthrough a different experience, plus it's nice and short so it doesn't really get repetitive. Honestly it's a shame it's a 3DS exclusive because it really deserves more exposure.

Bonus Content
Ugh weve fallen so far from Brawl I know the content is supposed to be split between the two versions, but if Nintendo wants to release them as separate games then that's how I'm going to treat them. There's like minimal content here, Melee had more content than this. Having the challenges back is nice, but it honestly doesn't matter because most the unlockables aren't great. The trophies are pretty half assed, most are just moved over from various 3DS games and the music player sucks, because of the poor sound quality. I hate being this negative about the game, but I really think making two versions of the game was a mistake.

Overall
Smash 3DS has no reason to exist. I know it's harsh and all, but seriously I feel actually cheated by Nintendo. It's clear that they released the inferior version first, so people would buy it due to hype, then drop 60 bucks two months later to get the actual game. Not only was that a dirty move to the fans, but I feel like they did Sakurai dirty too. He had to develop two games and try to live up to all the hype. I don't blame him for the lack of content here, but it's such a bummer that what could be an awesome Smash game was cut short just so Nintendo could make some extra cash. My review for the Wii U version should at least be a little more positive.

Brawl definitely gets too much hate. It added sooo much to the series. If it had slightly tweaked physics and no tripping, it would have easily stolen the crown from Melee. However! I don't think you can really ignore the modding scene when it comes to brawl. It just really extended the life of the game tremendously and a lot of kids even fixed people's main issues with it.

Oh and how easy it is to implement the mods or modes is so nice.

I actually totally forgot about the nodding community! While I couldn't really participate myself I loved seeing what everyone else was doing with it, I always wanted to give Project M a try myself. I just love how much a fanbase will do for something they like.

Brawl might have its flaws, but I've invested so much time into this game it's unreal, not many games can keep me playing them for over a year. Sure some of that content is exactly meaningful or even that good in some cases, but it still feels like a complete game. Which is a bummer that this one always gets the reputation for the 'worst Smash game'. I just think a lot of it is misguided. Thankfully I think Ultimate is successfully going to pull off what Brawl was trying to do, unfortunately before we get into that. Theres two more games we still have to do....

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008)

Gameplay
Sure Brawl is a lot slower and floatier than any of the other games in the franchise, but I never really minded. The core gameplay is still there and is still a lot of fun, plus it adds Final Smashes which are really cool finishing moves even if I disagree with how you get them. Locking them behind Smash Balls might be fun for party games, but are a huge pain in the ass if you're doing anything else. It's almost like drop whatever you're doing or someone is gonna grab it and insta kill you. Now I will say my biggest issue with the gameplay (and the Wii in general) is the default controllers you get. If you didnt have a GameCube or the extra money to buy a Classic Controller you're fucked. The Wiimote is such a garbage controller and the nunchuck only helps slightly. Thankfully the Gamecube controller saves it for me otherwise I'd be ripping the game to shreds right now.

Roster
Each new installment has better and better rosters it seems. My biggest complaint from Melee's was too many clones, but most of them have been dropped entirely with only a handful left and even those that are still around have been made even more unique (Ganondorf still got the shaft tho). Now for our daily "Franchise Revived by Smash" award. The winner is Kid Icarus! This franchise was finished for years, but Sakurai brough him back then gave him his own game in 2012, which completely revitalized the character and introduced him to a brand new era of fans. Great stuff, but what's even better is this was the first game in the series to introduce 3rd party characters with Sonic and Snake, which was huge. Most people expected Sonic would join the roster at some point, but Snake was a totally crazy inclusion that introduced a lot of people to Metal Gear Solid (myself included). Overall an amazing roster and if I had to make a complaint it's us losing Mewtwo, but Lucario was a cool replacement and it's nice to get a recent Pokemon instead of just relying on Gen 1.

Single Player
So this one's rough. Classic and All Star are still around and that's fine and all, but the real Single Player mode was the brand new Subspace Emissary. It was this big grand adventure with cut scenes and had all these different Nintendo characters interacted and it was so cool!...... At first. After you get over the cutscenes, it becomes pretty obvious that the actual gameplay sections were incredibly slow, repetitive and frankly unfair slogs through generic environments. It's pretty much a bare bones platformer that really doesn't offer much. Then there's the final level The Great Maze, I personally kinda like it? I know it gets a lot of hate, but I had fun looking around for all the characters. Now I will admit it's a bit of a slap in the face to play through the entire game just to lose all your characters. I think if they wanted to do the Metroidvania route, it should've just been the whole mode just expanded a bit.

Bonus Content
Ok now for something more positive Brawl has some bomb ass bonus content. Some of the new features open up the possibilities for hours of stuff to do, my favorites being the stage creator and music player. I spent hours playing around in both. More love is given to other Nintendo games as well. Theres a ton more trophies, as well as stickers (sure a little useless, but a fun addition nonetheless), they've even added a Chronicle of a bunch of Nintendo games, they didnt need to do it all but it's there, hell theres even demos of the origin games. In my opinion the best of the bonus content however comes in the form of the challenges. They pretty much work like achievements/trophies, but have actual rewards attached to them. It actually gives you incentive to go out and play some of the bonus content you wouldn't otherwise touch and some of them are actually really freaking hard.

Super Smash Bros. Melee (2001)

Gameplay
So totally in the minority here, but I don't think Melee's gameplay is that good tbh. I hate the faster gameplay. It makes the game feel closer to 'an actual fighting game' which I hate. Most fighting games usually have a huge divide between casual players and competitive players, almost to a point where a lot of competitive players act in a way that competitive play is the definitive way to play Smash. I know it's a little off topic and is more of an issue with a part of the fanbase. I do think it is a direct result of the gameplay and is still worth mentioning. That said a lot of the gameplay additions are incredibly welcome features that evolve the franchise in a way that's crazy especially considering it came out only two years after 64.

Roster
Holy shit, 64's was great, but this one's was even better. It's twice as large and adds a great combination of worthy characters and obscure ones to make a really cool roster. Marth and Roy being the obvious standouts seeing as how their inclusion literally brought FE to the US which is now a big Nintendo franchise. Now if I had to complain about the roster, it would be too many clone characters and yeah I get why they're viable, but Ganondorf especially gets hurt the most by this. He's a Captain Falcon clone for some reason? I get there was a big rush to get the game out, but like he's an important character, save him for Brawl and give that spot to Black Shadow. It's just such a disservice to the character and he stayed that way until now. Anywho still a minor complaint and the roster is still otherwise great

Single Player
This is where it gets really rough for me, if 64's content was limited Melee's was overkill. While I think Classic and All Star are great and a lot of fun, Adventure mode is rough though, conceptually it's one of the best single player modes in the franchise, the reality though is revealed after you clear it after a couple times and well it's super repetitive. The mode is too short to be a single adventure but it's too long to played by every character. So I think I gotta side with 64's minamilst approach on this one.

Bonus Content
Colossal step up from 64, there's a huge increase in bonus modes to play for starters, the biggest of which being Event Mode which is awesome and honestly I think is a way better mode than Adventure and should've honestly been more prominent. Secondly by making a good amount of characters and stages unlockable which always leads to nice surprises while playing. I will say though some of the unlock conditions are absolutely ridiculous, getting Mewtwo is the worst of it, most characters have two methods of unlocking either by playing X amount of matches or by a second method that's a little more secretive and fun to figure out. Mewtwo's second method however is to just play 20 hours of Melee matches. Like really, he's not even the last character it's just such an absurd requirement. The final addition is trophies, which are fantastic it's a great way to introduce people to new games as well some fan service to people that are already fans.

Overall
While I do think it's a tad overrated, thanks to the fanbase and it's pretty repetitive unlockables. But honestly all that's pretty minor especially when you consider all this game did for the franchise. Especially with how little time they had to work on the game, so overall I do think the advancements made to the franchise outweigh the little complaints I have. Definitely a stronger game than 64.

I find it weird as well, but my best guess is because of the way the stages are laid out. Each starting character has a stage and Yoshi's was Yoshi's Story which is closer to being the Yoshi franchise than Mario. Or who knows maybe Sakurai wanted each starting character to have their own franchise to represent

Super Smash Bros. (1999)

Gameplay
While the original has really dated gameplay by today's standard (the lack of side Bs consistently throw me off). I do think that it has a unique feeling that the other 4 can't replicate and it's easily the best one to sit down and play with friends. The simplicity here I think is what sells it. It's incredibly easy for non smash fans to pick up and play, the launch distance at low % is way greater than in any other Smash and it just feels so satisfying to land any type of hit and makes you feel like you're doing better than you actually are. In addition to that every character is simple enough that you dont need to sit there and study their mechanics to be able to play them.
Now that being said once you pass that skill level you start to long for more mechanics to play with, but I think as is it's a great start for new Smash players so it serves its purpose well.

Roster
Honestly I think Smash 64's roster is outstanding and is virtually flawless. The initial eight all have had fantastic games that warrant their inclusion. The balance of the franchises is also pretty solid, with no clear bias or neglect to any franchise. Then there's the secret characters and while Jigglypuff and Luigi are fun characters to play, but the real stars are Ness and Captain Falcon. Ness' inclusion gave EarthBound a second chance in America created an amazing fanbase and Falcon became a Nintendo all star, pretty much solely because of Smash. It's amazing how obscure characters/games can be revived simply by being in a crossover fighting games. Overall I'd say this roster is fantastic and it's a shame that it's overshadowed by the more grandiose rosters of future installments

Single Player
Classic Mode that's it, but you know what the original Classic Mode was great, it had a huge variety in challenges and the small roster meant in didn't get as tiresome as later games, unfortunately that also means you'll run out of content a lot faster too. Granted it's not too big of a deal, because the focus is definitely on the multiplayer, but classic mode is still a good time.

Bonus Content
If Single Player was limited then the bonus content is really bottom of the barrel stuff. You've got the bonus stages from Classic mode and character biographies. The bonus stages are fun and all, but they're still lumped in with Classic and dont feel independent of that. Then the biographies are well biographies, a nice little precursor to trophies, and I'd rather them be here than not, but it's still not much.

Overall
Smash 64 is great and always fun to play at parties, plus it launched the franchise so it's pretty hard to hate on. That said once you experience the game theres not much else to do except move onto the next games..

With only a week left until Ultimate I'm super hyped, but it also got me thinking. What have been the best and worst things about the franchise? So in an attempt to gather my thoughts in a central area as well as hear everyone else's opinion, I'm going to review all 5 games as well as a little 'hype review' for Ultimate leading up to release.

My reviewing process wont be traditional reviews either, I'm focusing on specific topics rather than giving it a number, because all the games play the same, it's the details that make them so different.

Here's the topics:
Gameplay
Roster
Single Player
Bonus Content

If you guys can think of any other topics to discuss feel free to suggest

If you dont have either, GS is much cheaper. HGSS is crazy expensive for some reason.

5

Ganondorf
Pikachu
Bowser
Auron
Sephiroth

Division 2 was my only perfect division. Came close on 4 and 8, but I had Ness > 2B and temporarily forgot that being iconic =/= contest strength and picked Lara > Ammy

I'm pretty conflicted personally, both seem way stronger than usual, but I think Smash hype/Bowsette/Being awesome will push Bowser slightly above Crono

2B got 54% on Ness
Geralt got 56% on Rosalina

I feel like Ness could probably pull off a 55% on Rosalina at least, so yeah I would definitely take 2B > Geralt

Haha yeah I saw it last night, it was pretty awful. Me and my friends had just finished a Harry Potter marathon and still left the theater super confused and disappointed. I think it's worse that the movie was more boring than it was bad

If we're talking this contest Sephiroth

Mega Man - Smash boost as well as Mega Man 11 being pretty well regarded and is putting him back in the limelight. Also Metal Man did way better than he has any right doing.

Crono - Chrono Trigger looks super strong due to low votals. Frog looked great against Monokuma and held up pretty well against Luigi. Even Magus put up a solid fight against Vincent.

Sonic - Huge Mania boost apparently Tails and Knuckles both embarrased all of their opponents so far. Knux even made Zero look really bad.

Meanwhile Sephiroth couldn't even double Captain Falcon and FF as a whole (with the except of Tifa) has looked pretty bad.

Smash counts Dorf as a 90's character so I imagine that should be how it is for the groupings as well

My LoZ lore is a little bit rusty, but I'm pretty sure Ganon's just the embodiment of Demise. I believe Ganondorf on the other hand has his own history. I think Ganon just happened to come to Dorf when he obtained the Triforce of Power.

That's just my interpretation though
