Yeah, I find it really difficult to imagine how they'd manage her being a transgender woman. Her mom is not the kind of person who'd let her transition, so this'd be Carl White for most of the movie. I think this is also a case where her being trans doesn't really fit with the story. Her getting her period is kind of a big part of it.

I believe Carrie also just resonates with the LGBT audience even without her being LGBT.

It's because in the book, Carrie is pretty ugly. She's fat, she's pimply, she's balding, and I believe she's unusually hairy.

More specifically, the DiC dub of the original anime (when they were trying to make it more US kid friendly).
Makoto (dub name Lita) (aka Jupiter) and the others were arguing about who's to play the lead for a school play Romeo & Juliet.
Out of everyone there, Makoto blatantly points to her chest and says she should get the part of Juliet because she 'has the most talent.'
Where-as, Japanese dub she outright says its cause she's got bigger boobs</explaining the joke>

Remember the episode where "Prince Darien" attacks Greg? When Moon Mercury and Jupiter are facing Zoicite in the alley, Mercury falls over and Jupiter is shocked looking up her skirt. They never edited that out lol
