He went from getting stomped 56-44% an hour in (against an opponent we expected him to beat easily!) to almost catching up 11 hours later. MGS3 was probably going to bleed percentage like crazy that match regardless, just maybe not as much as it ended up actually doing.

I don't think the stats topic noticed any BioShock rallies during the match but there were definitely some for both Starcraft and Mass Effect 2 going on the same day, both of which probably benefited BioShock.

I wouldn't overestimate the impact there though. BioShock has always been a solid midcarder.

Metal Gear in general has clearly lost a step since then and while MGS3 seems to have weathered the storm relatively well compared to the rest of the franchise, it's probable that it's lost a little strength too. You could support that as well with how Big Boss and particularly The Boss have also dropped off since 2013. So yeah, MGS3 being 4.24% behind what KHII got on BioShock in the face of it probably not being as strong as KHII anymore and rallying causing minor difficulties sounds about right.

Jinx might not be fodder like Draven simply because 2018 Draven is one of the worst examples of turbofodder weve ever seen but she should still be fairly bad fodder.

Whether its good or not, I see no real reason why gamefaqs should care about that particular show given they dont even like her game. In the age of near-unlimited options, nothing matters unless it scratches a particular itch of ours or becomes a true breakout mainstream hit.

The Final Fantasy Legend games were neat back in the day for providing more portable RPG options in an era in which we didn't necessarily get a ton of those released outside of Japan but by the end of the GBA era we'd gotten enough games that their merit had kind of expired. FFLII still exceeds my personal minimum standards while being different enough from normal RPG systems to still be sort of worthwhile but FFLI is absurdly unpolished and short enough to feel generally insubstantial while FFLIII standardized too much and thus feels more like just another deeply mediocre early 90's JRPG.

It's pretty well known due to the AVGN Episode though even before that CJayC had declared it to be the worst game he'd ever played.

At one point (dunno if it's still up and functional) you could "play" the game on youtube by watching video of it until you get to a choice, at which point the video would give you clickable links to the next scene depending on your choice. The whole was like an hour long.

If the poll means anything at all I think gauging GSC vs. Link to the Past is more likely to plausibly have some merit since while there was some leeching still, those two unlike Super Mario World at least don't seem to have been facing a hard SFF beatdown.

GSC alone got 34.38% on LttP and I guess you could try justify sticking with around that by how "Pokemon resists LFF better" and "Sure RSE leeched GSC but Link to the Past was being leeched by games too." GSC ~ Final Fantasy IV ( https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/6135- ) just doesn't sound plausible though.

Pokemon GSC and RSE combined got 42.13% on Link to the Past. Given that not every single RSE voter would have gone GSC and that at least voters for fellow SNES games SMW and DKC2 should disproportionately favor LttP, GSC being 40% on Link to the Past sounds overly generous.

I'm guessing from these that GSC gets into the high 30s against LttP 1-on-1. I dunno where people have SMW indirectly relative to LttP but from that I wouldn't take GSC to even get close to SMW.

I mean, if you look at something like MMX/LA in 2009 and FFX/MMX in 2015, it probably does imply LA > FFX, but

1. Constant MMX is pretty dubious.
2. Possibility of LFF and general fourway screwery in 2009.
3. At the margins 2015 MMX seemed to benefiting from Melee's substantial (though not yet dominant) and utterly pointless rally against GSC.

We already had Game of the Decade 2 (about a year and a half ago) between the previous character battle in late 2018 and now.

Since last character battle we've seen all the Smash Ultimate Fighters' Pass inclusions, RE2 (also RE3) and FFVII remakes, Kingdom Hearts III (whatever it's worth), and Metroid Dread, so even among gamefaqs mainstays there's reason for a lot of them to have potentially shifted a bit. Who knows what Geralt or 2B are worth at this point. Presumably Doom Slayer's got enough clout to get in now? Maybe Ryu bombs less terribly now that Street Fighter V is less fresh? Maybe we can have a Sonic vs. Pikachu Battle of "They had a Movie" and perhaps Sonic Mania vs. the post-Sword/Shield disappointment of the latter can make Sonic competitive there? Do people anti-vote Chris Pratt and do we get a trailer mid-contest?

Feels like there's lots of things to discuss by now and cool stuff that could happen that are different than last Character Battle.

There is absolutely nothing here I feel is worth noting. FFI's story is obviously not good at all but the gag that you rescue the princess ASAP and the "what" of the final boss are kind of neat. This one is just sparse and dull cliche about people who barely talk and that you don't care about. Avoids the lowest score for not being a significant active detriment to its game, which would be hard for a game this old to manage.

Final Fantasy II doesn't even really cut it for a late 80's game. Original version of Snatcher (which at least has the same core story as the Sega CD one minus part 3) was a 1988 game. I hear some people still like Ultima IV and V (haven't played)? 1985 and 1988. Ys 1 and 2 is no masterpiece but definitely better than this; the Turbo CD version was from 1989 (based on games from 1987 and 1988 but the Turbo CD's improved pacing and presentation helps a lot). Phantasy Star II from 1989 that we just rated is bad but better than this. Maniac Mansion, which isn't exactly a riveting story but at least has some fun dialogue and multiple paths and endings? 1987. I assume other western adventure games of the era might do something worth noting but I haven't played any besides Shadowgate. Mother 1 doesn't have quite as much of Earthbound's level of weirdness but it's still got a lot of charm with probably a more-coherent main plot and delivers well enough when it counts; it's from 1989. Never played the Famicom Detective Club games but I assume at least one of them does SOMETHING right if some people still care decades later; 1988 and 1989. Sweet Home and it's atmosphere and proto-Resident Evil notes? 1989. Portopia has...Uh. Well not a whole lot in general but there's the one thing at the end; it's from 1983 with the Famicom version from 1985.

tl;dr For games that were actually trying, Final Fantasy II's story wasn't even good for its era.

I can sorta buy "Phantasy Star II's story is a 10/10" being a real opinion. My general understanding of Phantasy Star II's popularity is that it got a lot of praise back in the day (for a Genesis JRPG anyways) and that it still tends to make top 100 Genesis lists but that people who didn't play it back in the day don't tend to like it much.

I mean, I obviously don't agree with him, but if his shit taste plus nostalgia or whatever says it's a 10/10, it's valid.

Am looking forward to the explanation though!

Phantasy Star II is from 1989 and feels every bit like the pre-SNES game that it is. A decent setting idea with a few notable moments but the plot and characterization are so spare and underwhelming its hard to care. I generally expect any JRPG in the last 30 years where any effort whatsoever was put into the story to be better than this simply by trying.

some neat stuff but I thought the really long, climactic cutscene near the end of part 3 was kind of bad.
As a game in general itd be a 6. It was often just kind of annoying to play and felt archaic compared to Ace Attorney. The reputation this thing has seems to me largely due to Kojimas name and people simply not playing many/any other Japanese adventure games/visual novels.
