Fantastic voice acting and some great moments and twists and fun 90s FMVs. The story in general does seem a little thinner than would probably be ideal though, and Kain being Kain generally doesn't leave a ton of opportunities for interaction with other characters,

That would hurt Chrono Trigger a bit but nah. The game tends to be even stronger in the rest of the Western Hemisphere (Canada particularly) than in the U.S. and back in 2015 it easily beat FFX in most of Europe and even came close in the U.K.

Maybe but you're kinda risking coming off like you were born in 1809 yourself.
People overthrowing the government because they're desperate and can't feed their families is one thing. Doing it because they can't buy an iphone anymore is a much bigger ask. Widespread sanctions might be able to cripple, say, Japan or the United Kingdom, which are not even close to food self-sufficient. Modern Russia though?

Doesn't look like the Russian people will likely be starving any time soon. And they have oil and gas to spare too.

Voted yes because companies cutting off additional chemicals, equipment, and vehicles Russia imports may at least hobble their war effort a bit and domestic unpopularity is never good for a regime but I would not be hopeful about a revolution caused by civilian deprivation.

Oh, Putin for sure had other demands ("rollback of NATO forces across Eastern Europe"), which I don't think could have realistically been granted. You typically don't get everything you want out of negotiation. That's basically the point. But if our diplomats were even open to the possibility of explicitly excluding Ukraine from NATO, it's news to me and definitely doesn't match what I remember being reported.

But more fundamentally to me that clashes with self-determination of a country. The US and Russia are going to hash out what Ukraine's foreign policy is allowed to be? Doesn't sit well with me.

Alliances are a two(-plus) way street. You don't get to join NATO just because you want to. NATO countries have to unanimously agree to let you in. The idea that the United States actually normally has nothing to do with or decisions to make regarding whether Ukraine should be able to join our alliance is blatantly untrue.

totally correct that Ukraine's increased interest towards NATO is a result of Russia's actions since 2014 but Russia's not going to be happy about the possibility regardless. It is indeed plausible no reasonable diplomatic maneuvering could have stopped this conflict and that Putin was deadset on war. I just don't really appreciate that a real attempt does not appear to have been made under what seems to me to be reasoning that I don't think holds up.

I think the positions Biden has taken on the possibility of Ukraine in NATO and directly intervening in the Ukraine war don't make a lot of sense when put together.

-If we're not actually willing to go to war to protect Ukraine, Ukraine should not have been in consideration for NATO, as if they activated Article 5, then we'd have to choose between getting dragged into a war we don't otherwise want to be part of just for the sake of NATO's credibility, or going "screw Article 5" and doing significant damage to NATO's credibility.
-Biden clearly thinks going to war to protect Ukraine is not worth it.

Why, then, the unwillingness to negotiate with Russia over no Ukraine in NATO?

I'm coming up with four possibilities.

1. Biden did not expect Russia to actually, actually for serious invade. In which case, bluff called.
2. Biden figured this was a possibility but was totally fine with having Ukraine go through this since he figured the damage it would do to Russia's reputation, military, etc. would be worth it. The brutal realpolitik there doesn't sound much like Biden to me and even on its own terms it's still way up in the air how everything shakes out.
3. Biden figured that Putin would not be satisfied with just "no Ukraine in NATO" and would insist on a rollback of NATO forces across Eastern Europe, and that the invasion was otherwise 100% inevitable regardless so there was no point in giving Putin the time of day. Given that attempts at negotiation were made this doesn't appear credible.
4. The policies on NATO expansion make no real sense and Biden and the foreign policy blob never thought to question them even with the threat of a major European war.

The only way Biden's administration comes out of this looking good to me is "#3 with Biden being entirely correct about how Putin was thinking about this but they lied to the public about actually really trying with negotiations" which would sorta be its own can of worms.

The Corollary draws from the Monroe Doctrine - and then adds stuff that wasn't in it! They're not the same thing and the former isn't 200 years old.

Though regarding U.S. hypocrisy and perfidy in foreign policy, since Gaddafi was mentioned, my understanding is that the Libya intervention was seen by Putin and his circle as an insult in which they were blatantly lied to. Russia avoided vetoing some U.N. resolutions with the understanding that NATO was mainly pursuing humanitarian objectives and then the latter used said resolutions to justify backing a full-on regime change that left Gaddafi dead. Incidentally, regardless of the merits of the Libya intervention, there was unquestionably no self-defense rationale for that, nor for that of the Kosovo intervention. "But human rights" is the opposite of reassuring there given that Russia on human rights is, uh, Russia. Now obviously NATO doesn't seem interested or foolish enough in starting a direct war with Russia but it makes all the self-righteous claims about how NATO is "only for self-defense" and that Russia therefore has nothing at all to worry if they don't invade Ukraine a bit much.

It sounded like that story was supposed to make Russia look worse? It certainly doesn't make them look any better but if Ukraine is willing to disregard the potential consequences to their own territory by placing combat forces there, uh. Hard to blame Russia too much for that one if Ukraine doesn't give a damn what happens in Chernobyl either?
