The documents reveal that high-ranking officials generally held the opinion that the war was unwinnable while keeping this view from the public.

And I've read the entire paper. Either you are lying or you ate the propaganda right up from your superiors boy.

It was unwinnable because every year the definition of winning was building some magical ever victorious Afghan army that could beat the Taliban without US support which was not going to be realistic in any of the years we tried it. I was there in 2010-2011 and we actually did push back the Taliban everywhere and keep them from taking the country for another 10 years. I have to believe we gave the Afghan people a decade without them in power.

Oh ok:

Detail the USAs long term plan for Afghanistan. Here I'll do it for you:

We kept the Taliban from taking and holding a single province for 20 years. Then we just up and left because of some fucking nonsense about "the forever war" which ultimately amounted to us as a country getting frustrated that they couldn't stand on their own and bored of the whole endeavor and unlike every other president before him Joe Biden didn't listen to the adults in the room and pulled everyone out and shut the door behind them and said "whats the worst that could happen"

Well here it is.

No. Just that this was inevitable. Because the US military is incompetent. I've read the Afghan papers.

In the time that we had more than 5,000 troops out of the 2 million in our military in the country they didn't capture a single city or even a district center (which in some cases is no more than a small town) and hold it. Nothing about them taking over was inevitable unless you spout some nonsense like "we had to end the forever war".

What you are upset about is that the US military was embarrassed.

You don't actually care about the people of Afghanistan. Its your ego that hurts.

You've dodged this question multiple times.

Are you glad that the Taliban retook Afghanistan? Do you think that is a good result? Mr 14 karma throwaway account. No more just spurting out the same drool of "you don't actually care about the people". Tell us what you think should have happened there if not this apocalyptic disaster that has and is continuing to unfold in the country with millions of people on the brink of starvation in a country with a bunch of barely literate terrorists running the show.

No the US is not a third world country dude. Actually read about why it isn't rather than asking such a ridiculous question.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Developed_country
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Developing_country

I mean jesus the third world term by definition excludes the US because it dates back to the cold war and was just meant to refer to countries that weren't part of the alliance of the US (first world) or the Soviets (second world).

You would know all this if you actually bothered to learn it at any point in your already long life based on the age of your account. Does information just not stick in your brain or have you actually never had the curiousity to learn any of this information?

Your account is 15 years old which I'm going to assume means you are 30 or near to it and you have never bothered to learn much of anything in your entire life. I weep for humanity because I know you are probably above average in intelligence because you are smart enough to have finally arrived at the poitn where you are asking this question.

But I know that nothing of this is actually going to stick in your brain and a day from now if I asked you to define "third world country" you wouldn't be able to say something intelligent. This is something that you will never know. You are genetically incapable of actually having this information stick in your brain.

To be honest, this is one of those things that, as a college student learning things on my own, caused me to often feel like I was missing some fundamental financial concept. Like, it's blindingly obvious that you lose anything you pay in interest, so you should do whatever means you pay the least interest when paying off your loans, yet people I would think should have so much more experience with managing finances would not follow that decision tree. Turns out people are just unbelievably stupid. You're looking at effectively taking a 15% rate of return on that money vs 3% (i.e. every year you'll have another $300 vs another $60, ignoring the compounding rate).

(I'm aware that there are more nuances when deciding whether you should put money towards paying off a loan vs doing something else with it, but generally paying off a loan with a 15% interest rate should be one of the absolute top priorities for your money after the things you need to survive.)

On a side note, my credit card company probably hates my guts since I haven't paid them a cent of interest in the entire 15 years I've had a card...

It was baffling to see because the guy isn't an idiot. If he was stupid I wouldn't think anything of it and stop trying to explain it but in most other respects than math apparently this is a fairly smart guy. We are both software engineers and I know he is capable of doing good work but I just couldn't get him to realize it was basic math.

(355,000*.03) < ( 350,000*.03 + 5,000*.15)

I would write that on the board and he would demand we add in loan terms, map it out on a spread sheet, factor in how much the person is spending on their grocery bills every month, etc.. He just saw the 350,000 and lost his mind.

Give them like 2 scenarios

A: 5 years from now, if loan A is not paid off and B is left to its own devices, you will owe X
B: 5 years from now, if loan A is left to its own devices and B is paid off, you will owe Y

Is X larger or smaller than Y?!?

(disregard stuff like inflation, tbh, just focus on raw growth)

Whenever I tried to do that he would try and say I was trying to make it too simple and try to add factors that had nothing to do with the problem at hand.

Like I would write something on the board like

500*.15 > 500*.03 ..... so he should pay off part of the loan

And then he would demand I factor in the length of the loan terms, and the total principle, and then add in a bunch of other factors that didn't matter and then he would try to cancel out math by saying "and this is like a lot of money you owe like hundreds of thousands in interest on the house so if you pay that off at all its better and if you just pay the required payment on the lower loan it will go away on its own. I'm the one that has paid off his mortgage I know this better than you kids".

He just couldn't wrap his head around the fact that the $500 didn't magically become bigger because he was putting it towards a longer term larger loan.

The basic question from a guy was "should I pay off my small high interest loan or put the money towards my low interest mortgage" which turned into an hour of me trying to plain why paying off $2,000 towards a loan with a 15% interest rate is better than playing off $2,000 towards a much larger loan with a 3% interest rate.

I just couldn't think of a way to explain it. His argument basically amounted to "mathematically it makes the most sense to make the biggest scariest loan slightly less scary than to get rid of that $2000 in credit card debt." How are people this mathematically illiterate?

I generally think about it like this..... this is Squenix basically taking the same route as comic books or actual mythology (think greek and roman gods).

What you are seeing isn't necessarily a scene for scene remake or a new game but just a different story told with the same iconic characters that has a similar tone and elements as the original but with things shifted around.

The original FFVII came out in 1997 and if you are honest with yourself you will admit it was a bit of a scattered clusterfuck in terms of its story. Some memorable elements but this remake is jumping in in the 2020's to dive deeper and take the parts that people liked and expand upon them. Take that tone and the story beats people remember and make something new around that.

John Rabe was a Nazi who tried to stop the Nanjing massacre during WW2

Rabe clearly didn't truly know who the Nazis were at their core.

On 28 February 1938, Rabe left Nanking. He traveled first to Shanghai, returning to Berlin on 15 April 1938. He took with him a large number of source materials documenting Japanese atrocities in Nanking.[12] Rabe showed films and photographs of Japanese atrocities in lecture presentations in Berlin and wrote to Hitler, asking him to use his influence to persuade the Japanese to stop further violence. Rabe was detained and interrogated by the Gestapo; his letter was never delivered to Hitler.

The Hitler and Nazi party that existed in Rabe's mind when he supported wasn't the one that existed in real life or else he wouldn't have gotten himself locked up by the Gestapo for literally asking Hitler to demand the Japanese show mercy to the Chinese.

If you do the math about 170k were under 65 which is about 0.1% of the workforce assuming they were all working.

An added point that is a bit cold blooded sounded but true is that if a group of people that are on average old enough to be retired people die you would actually expect to see the opposite of a labour shortage.

Retired people don't work but they are still consumers that need products and services.

The pandemic is causing these shortages of labor but the deaths on their own aren't.
