I think shock comedy isn't in vogue anymore and that's fine. Comedians need to learn they're not entitled to people's laughs and as society changes what people find funny changes as well. You can change with the times or be swept by them. Not to mention, a lot of the humor in shock comedy comes from saying something so out there that nobody would take it seriously. It's less funny when you realize they're a lot of people's actual opinions.

I do find it kind of odd though that when people say "I'm fine with shock comedy/this comedian is usual funnier, but this joke just wasn't!" It's always the joke the person finds personally offensive. It's easier to laugh at offensive jokes that you have no stake in I guess

Life for the average citizen in the USSR was not as bad as people claim it to be, most people did what they do in any country. Obviously intellectuals and people who spoke out against the party were going to have a bad time, but most people aren't politically motivated and wouldn't really ever come under the radar of any party officials. The way we think of life in the USSR is largely propaganda.

That's entirely different than claiming Stalin wasn't that bad and propaganda made him seem worse. He had a complete disregard for human life and no problem killing and silencing people to keep power. There's no disputing that his policies directly led to the deaths of millions. Hundred of thousands of people were purged and either murdered, exiled, or sentenced to forced labor just on the suspicion of having anti-party sentiments. These are well documented events.

Why the hell should intelligent and rational people have to play by the rules of idiots who believe this dumb shit?

Because men still way too often find the need to defend themselves from accusations of being gay, or getting pissed off when they're called gay because a lot of people still have the implicit idea that there's something wrong with it or that it's a shot at their manhood.

Defending Obama from claims that he's gay gives me those vibes.

When people lie, you can expose their lies and the motivations behind them.

Or you can just shrug and say 'eh, anyone who believes that is dumb anyway'.

I get that, and I'm willing to consider I might be wrong. I'll admit letting them pass off obvious bullshit like this isn't great. On the other hand, you don't have to believe it's true to say "So?"

I'm aware they are pushing it because they think it's a bad thing and there's a lot of things conservatives should be called out when they're clearly full of shit.

I just don't think there's a need to defend Obama not being gay because whether he's gay or not is a non-issue. It should be responded to in the same way you'd respond to a coworker saying "I think x is gay." Which is "Cool" or "Who gives a shit"

Having said that, I'm basing that on the story I heard which was letters that were "found" of him saying he imagined sex with men. If people are claiming he was at a party doing crack as well as the gay thing, that's a different story.

I'm not saying the story isn't bullshit, I'm aware it's intended to smear him. But it's only a smear if you believe being gay is somehow a bad thing, so dignifying it with a defense is pointless and gives the impression that there even is anything to defend.

Not all homophobes vote Republican, you know that, right?

There are swing voters, and even Democrats that will find the idea of Obama being gay 'icky'.

The Democratic vote does not solely consist of enlightened, progressive people on the left. Remember when Obama himself opposed gay marriage?

Trying to convince people that Obama isn't gay because some people might find it icky just feeds into the idea that has been far too common, at least since I was a kid, that being gay is fine except not really.

There's no reason to debate with these people about whether Obama is gay because whether he is or isn't, that's his business. Full stop. If people decide not to vote democrat because they're scumbags who can't tolerate the idea of gay people then that's a sacrifice that should he made to not have to defend whether Obama is gay, as if he's somehow done anything wrong.

'His marriage is a sham and he lied to the American people'.

'So much for being a Christian!'

'Isn't a gay president a security risk? What if he was blackmailed?'

'What else is he hiding from us?'

Ad nauseum.

In what sense? Is he being accused of doing anything unethical or illegal or negative in the sense that it's negative because conservatives don't like gay people?

I've only briefly heard about this, but from what I've seen the only actual accusation being made is that he might be gay. Which, really, who gives a shit?

Nobody believes conservatives aren't pushing this because they and the people they sell this stuff to believe it's bad, the only response should be "So?"

Unless there's more to it I'm not aware of.

I mean, why bother arguing it? Likely he isn't gay, even if he was, the only people whose opinions would be effected by that information are the types of people who wouldn't like him anyway.

AFAIK the rumours don't say anything negative other than speculating he's gay, which is only negative if you're already a bigot.

I could be way off but saying she's selfish fot not wanting to be with you, saying she worked on "her not us", letting yourself be rushed into an engagement and a vasectomy. Iunno, I feel like you need to take a look at your own actions.
