Here are the books I read while I was suspended:
At Swim-Two-Birds, by Brian Nolan: A very funny book, ahead of its time with metahumor and recursive structure.

Hopscotch, by Julio Cortazar
I know there are some on CE who have read this recently, and this comment may only make sense to them: I liked it better read straightfoward than going back and including the supplemental chapters.

White Teeth, by Zadie Smith
Often really funny, it also has commentary on colonialism and immigration that sometimes feels a bit on the nose but was probably pushing boundaries when it was written 20 years ago.

Moby Dick, byHerman Melville
What am I supposed to say here?

Slapstick, by Kurt Vonnegut
I really like Kurt Vonnegut. This book feels a bit like he's a writer doing a Kurt Vonnegut impression.

The United Auto Workers union said Friday it will not expand its strikes against Detroits three automakers after General Motors made a breakthrough concession on unionizing electric vehicle battery plants.

The announcement of the pause in adding factories to the strikes came minutes after GM agreed to bring workers at battery factories into the UAWs national contract, essentially assuring they will represented by the union.

We have had a major breakthrough that has not only dramatically changed negotiations, but is going to change the future of our union and the future of our industry, union President Shawn Fain told workers Friday in a video appearance.

Fain, wearing a T-shirt that said Eat the Rich in bold letters to back his contention that its time for the working class to make gains over billionaires, said the UAW is wining at GM and expects to do the same at Ford and Stellantis.

https://news.yahoo.com/injunction-halts-illinois-law-aimed-091852498.html

A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction to halt enforcement of Illinois' newly signed Deceptive Practices of Limited Services Pregnancy Centers Act.

"The bill is painfully and blatantly a violation of the First Amendment," U.S. District Judge Iain Johnston said Thursday in Rockford's federal courthouse.

The act, signed by Gov. JB Pritzker last week, bans crisis pregnancy centers from using "misinformation, deceptive practices, or misrepresentation" in order to interfere with access to abortion services or emergency contraception. Violators faced up to $50,000 fines.

Johnston listened to over four hours of testimony from anti-abortion advocates during an emergency hearing Thursday afternoon. Witnesses said law has had a chilling effect on their rights to free speech and expression and their ability to distribute literature that identifies alternatives to abortion.

Kevin Rilott, director of the Rockford Family Initiative and a plaintiff in the lawsuit, said before the law was enacted as many as 100 people attended regular prayer vigils. From that group, he drew his "sidewalk counselors," people who routinely gather on the sidewalk outside of abortion centers and confront women with the literature.

After the law as passed, Rilott said the number of prayer vigil attendees dropped to about 30 people and greatly reduced the pool of potential sidewalk counselors.

"It's going to stop us from offering mothers a choice," Rilott said.

The bill was championed by Attorney General Kwame Raoul. The law allows the Attorney General's Office to investigate complaints against pregnancy centers using questionable tactics and strengthens the Attorney General's authority to prosecute incidences of consumer fraud in such cases.

"There's no doubt who the Attorney General wants to win or lose in the market place of ideas, but the government doesn't get to decide that," Johnston said. "The people do."

Attorney Peter Breen of the Thomas More Society, a not-for-profit Chicago-based law firm, represented the plaintiffs. Breen said he was pleased with the judge's decision.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-08-04/grindr-punishes-staff-for-union-drive-with-rto-order-union-complaint-says

Grindr Inc., the LGBTQ dating company, is using a new return-to-office policy to punish employees who are trying to unionize, workers alleged in a complaint filed with US labor officials.

The company has recently restricted remote work and threatened workers with firing unless they live near or relocate to an in-person office, the Communications Workers of America said in a complaint filed Friday with the National Labor Relations Board.

The CWA said the moves were in response to the union drive that workers announced on July 20. Grindr didnt immediately respond to a request for comment.

I dont see any need for a digital product such as ours to require a physical presence especially as we have worked so well remotely over the last three or so years, said Grindr software engineer Jack Alto, a member of the unions organizing committee.

Companies and their employees have been tussling over return-to-office policies.

AT&T Inc. recently told 60,000 managers that they must report to work in person at one of nine locations, which some employees view as a move to reduce staff. Companies in states like New Jersey and Texas could lose tax breaks if workers dont show up onsite often enough. And Google parent Alphabet Inc. said office attendance will now factor into performance reviews.

The CWA lodged a complaint in January against Alphabet and one of its staffing firms, accusing them of using return-to-office policies as a tool to try to derail a unionization campaign at YouTube Music. That complaint is still pending. The companies have denied wrongdoing.

Also a bunch of other billionaires are backing this cretin
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/richard-hanania-white-supremacist-pseudonym-richard-hoste_n_64c93928e4b021e2f295e817

A prominent conservative writer, lionized by Silicon Valley billionaires and a U.S. senator, used a pen name for years to write for white supremacist publications and was a formative voice during the rise of the racist alt-right, according to a new HuffPost investigation.

Richard Hanania, a visiting scholar at the University of Texas, used the pen name Richard Hoste in the early 2010s to write articles where he identified himself as a race realist. He expressed support for eugenics and the forced sterilization of low IQ people, who he argued were most often Black. He opposed miscegenation and race-mixing. And once, while arguing that Black people cannot govern themselves, he cited the neo-Nazi author of The Turner Diaries, the infamous novel that celebrates a future race war.

A decade later, writing under his real name, Hanania has ensconced himself in the national mainstream media, writing op-eds in the countrys biggest papers, bending the ears of some of the worlds wealthiest men and lecturing at prestigious universities, all while keeping his past white supremacist writings under wraps.
...
The 37-year-old has been published by The New York Times and The Washington Post. He delivered a lecture to the Yale Federalist Society and was interviewed by the Harvard College Economics Review. He appeared twice on Tucker Carlson Tonight, Fox News former prime-time juggernaut. He was a recent guest on a podcast hosted by the CEO of Substack, the $650 million publishing platform where Hanania has nearly 20,000 subscribers.

Hanania has his own podcast, too, interviewing the likes of Steven Pinker, the famous Harvard cognitive psychologist, and Marc Andreessen, the billionaire software engineer. Another billionaire, Elon Musk, reads Hananias articles and replies approvingly to his tweets. A third billionaire, Peter Thiel, provided a blurb to promote Hananias book, The Origins of Woke, which HarperCollins plans to publish this September. In October, Hanania is scheduled to deliver a lecture at Stanford.

Meanwhile, rich benefactors, some of whose identities are unknown, have funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars into a think tank run by Hanania. The think tank doles out cash to conservative academics, and produces political studies that are cited across right-wing media.
...
Peter Thiel, the right-wing venture capitalist and billionaire, expressed excitement over the books takedown of diversity, equity and inclusion programs. DEI will never d-i-e from words alone, Thiel wrote. Hanania shows we need the sticks and stones of government violence to exorcize the diversity demon.

And Vivek Ramaswamy, the GOP presidential candidate with a net worth over $600 million a fortune derived, in part, from his work in biotech wrote that Hanania is unafraid to transcend the Overton Window on issues of race and gender, and that his book delivers a devastating kill shot to the intellectual foundations of identity politics in America.
