fair enough! my history with speedgames goes back to the metroid 02 site and speed demos archive, which was apparently predated with stuff i didn't know about. (i'd still say SM was probably somewhat important though!)

SDA started as a Quake site before expanding to other games (that's what the "demos" in the name refers to).

Metroid did help popularize console speedruns though, with its ingame completion timer and % rating (people still use % as a reference even in games that don't have %).

You're not allowed to enter multiple brackets with the same results anymore. I've always wondered to what degree you could fill out multiple brackets with every permutation of the most debated close matches, but I've never bothered to do it myself. I think I only did 4 or 5 this time, mainly with different versions of the 1997/1996/2000 cluster.

The match pics have 4 games; what happens to the years with more than 4 major highlights? 1998 gets OOT and RB for sure. MGS probably gets the third spot. Out of the games listed on the bracket, Half-Life is probably the next most important, but is Allen seriously going to leave StarCraft out of this?

And what about something like 2002, where all 5 of the listed games could be argued to deserve a spot?

fun fact: you don't actually need to read the book - there's a "default" pattern that works until you read the book, after which it selects one of four patterns (including the default)

The egg has 4 different patterns, which is random per file. But it's not generated until you read the book for the first time. If you go into the egg without reading the book, it's always pattern 1 on every save file (it's even possible to go to the end with pattern 1, leave and read the book, and return with a different pattern).

Honestly 1989 is the only year where I'd take a console's release (Game Boy) into consideration for the overall significance of the year. Every other year with console releases, even ones that I like, has enough of a games lineup to stand on its own.

... I mean, what exactly are you expecting from a 2DS. The original point is that it's a 3ds without 3d.

Well the original 2DS also had a horrible design/shape which contributed to its low cost and people thinking of it as a "secondary" model... Plus during the time when it was sold concurrently with the N3DS, it had the "missing features" caveat as well (this was after the o3DS was retired, so 2DS was the only non-New model available). Now with this one, both of those downsides are gone so the non-3D is the only difference between them.

And tbh it sounds like a good tradeoff for $50.

The purge rate at this exact second in time is 2 days instead of 1 day. It's usually 1 here, so the last purge must have pushed it under the threshold.

Edit: IDK, I have a script that shows the purge rate of each board, and it keeps flipping between 1 and 2 days when I check it.
