Side note, if you want to talk historical impact, I haven't played that much Quake, but I think it beats...probably the entirety of 2004, and the entirety of 1994.

This is why we don't vote based on historical impact.

This is just a popularity contest TC and we all tend to romanticize the games we grew up playing, often remembering them as better than they are in comparison to more recent stuff. It is what it is.

ive been playing games for a long time and imo 2004 was one of the best years in gaming. alot of revolutionary ideas that are still used today happened that year. i still play games from that era 1994 not so much .

I think most people would agree 2004 was a great year for gaming. I'd argue fall 2004 especially was amazing, and honestly the last great time for gaming so far.

But it isnt quite 1994. My top 10 would have both years, but 04 would be like 8th and 94 would be like 4th.

I expected more votes to come from World of Warcraft and Half-Life 2 fans. Those two should destroy anything from 1994. I guess PC gamers aren't bothering to vote.

Such a person would hopefully be doing more than just reading whiner topics, and would judge us by our other topics instead. Such a person might even be curious by what's going on in the whiner topics and search out an answer to learn what's actually going on.

No one is debating that 2004 was a really good year. That's how it's still managing to keep it close against one of the most popular years on this site.

fair enough! my history with speedgames goes back to the metroid 02 site and speed demos archive, which was apparently predated with stuff i didn't know about. (i'd still say SM was probably somewhat important though!)

SDA started as a Quake site before expanding to other games (that's what the "demos" in the name refers to).

Metroid did help popularize console speedruns though, with its ingame completion timer and % rating (people still use % as a reference even in games that don't have %).

I'm intelligent outsider will realize what's going on. It doesn't take many brain cells to realize OP has different tastes in gaming than most of the users here and is salty that his tastes aren't being represented in a poll.

An intelligent outsider also tends to lurk and learn what the site culture is about before creating an account.
They will notice this site loves Japanese games and RPGs (specially after going through their first contest) and that coming here to educate people about the wonders of Halo is pointless.
