I mean, even if you believe that Iron Man was a D-list character pre-2008, he also had the advantages of being played by an A-list actor, superheroes not being a completely saturated genre at the time, and his movie not being complete trash.

Daisy (Character): Of all the major Mario characters, Daisy is the most pointless and lacking in personality. I think I've said that multiple times now, but I mean it this time. She has nothing. Descriptions of her say she's tomboyish or spunky, but man, tomboys do no wear frilly dresses. You can say she looks more energetic than Peach, I GUESS, but that's barely a personality trait. At least Peach can argue that she takes the quality of being feminine to a ridiculous extreme; Daisy can't even argue that. The only thing Daisy has going for her, the ONLY thing, is that she's the hipster version of Peach. When my sister plays Mario Kart, this is who she chooses.

Super Mario Bros: The Movie (1993): Obviously, this movie is terrible. No one will ever deny that. But it's so epically terrible. Every single decision made about this movie is just completely baffling. Can you imagine watching this without having played the games? You'd be so confused. Even having played the games, it's still confusing. The decision to make the alternate dimension this dreary cyberpunk dystopia is so bizarre, and the "goombas" are just atrocious. Like, for all of this movie's infinite flaws, it is at the very least memorable, which is more than I can say 90% of video game movies. Tell me one thing that happened in the Silent Hill or Prince of Persia or Assassin's Creed movies. Yeah, I thought not.
Boswer's Clown Car
Super Mario Bros.
Peach is Bowser Jr's Mom (Fan Theory): This is the dumbest fan theory. I mean, yes, Peach doesn't deny it, but Peach is clearly a moron. She's inbred royalty whom we have never actually seen make a political decision ever; Toadsworth is clearly the one really running the show. All she needs to actually do is look pretty and wave to crowds; this is why she has enough time to learn how golf, baseball, tennis, kart racing, every Olympic sport, dodgeball, and baking. You cannot tell me that you would be comfortable with her as your political leader. And don't say that applies to Rosalina, too, Rosalina is like a million years old and had time to learn these skills. She's great, shut up. Besides which, it's already Mario canon that babies are delivered by stork. It is plausible that the wrong baby, intended for Bowser, could have been delivered to Peach, but I feel strongly that would make Bowser Jr either Peach's son or Bowser's, but not both. So, the only plausible way this can go is if Bowser Jr is delivered to Peach, then Bowser kidnaps him, and Peach doesn't bother contesting it, making Bowser Jr Peach's son, but not Bowser's.

Mario CYOA Books: I had to look these up. I'll be honest, even as a kid, I had no interest in CYOA books. I was a discerning child, and the only books I read for fun were mystery books. Remember Encyclopedia Brown? I remember reading one book where the mystery hinged on the idea that you can't put your left hand into your right pocket. When I read that, I immediately tried to do it and succeeded with no effort, and after that, I was mildly annoyed at the book.

Milli Vanilli: Milli Vanilli is one of those bands that I know existed, but I cannot tell you a single thing about them. Even as a kid, I knew nothing except the name. Wikipedia says they're German, and I didn't even know that. Oh jeez, I see that there was a controversy about them not only lip-synching, but using other performers to sing in their recordings who labeled as talented but unmarketable, that is... pretty atrocious, actually. And one of their concerts had a problem where the recording kept playing back despite them not wanting it to, making it obvious they were bullshit artists? I've gone from having literally zero opinions about them to being very against them in the span of about five minutes. And what bad luck for Princess Peach declaring that this is her favorite band. I guess that's the risk you take when you're making a low-budget cartoon and can only get B-list celebrities to guest star. The Simpsons gets Michael Jackson, and that guy never had any controversies.

Mario Pissing but It's in Friday Night Funkin': I can't believe there are multiple Mario pissing nominations. This earns more points than the original video for being higher effort, but like... I've never played FNF, so it's not doing better based on that. Call me a puritan, but there is no circumstance in which I want to see, hear, smell, or talk about piss ever, except possibly to a doctor. It's just one of the grossest aspects of our bodies. People are sometimes like "we shouldn't have shame about our bodies or what we are," and I disagree, I think sometimes you should have shame and not talk about things, and pissing is definitely one of them.

SMB1 OST: I listened to a playlist of all SMB1 songs. I remembered all of them perfectly EXCEPT for the ending theme, which seemed completely new to me. I felt like I'd never heard it before! It was like discovering an entire new ancient Mario song, very fun. Anyway, this is obviously like the most classic of all classic OSTs, nothing else can compare except Tetris and maybe Pokemon.

Credits Parade (Paper Mario): What's with parades ending Mario RPGs? This happened in Mario RPG, too. I like the triumphant trumpet version of the Mario theme. Man, Peach may not know how to run a country or invest in security, but she... can't invest in parade security, either. Bowser's minions are just right there, celebrating with her. I like how the Yoshi float says YOSHI is big letters. Wait, Bowser is invited to the parade dedicated to the defeat of Bowser? Peach, girl, I don't know what to say. I like the opera singer, I don't remember her at all from the game. Oh man, Merlon! Man, your design got a lot fancier over time. Who invited General Guy to this? God, Peach, you... you are really bad at organizing events. But this does at least feel like the ending to a video game, so you have that going for you.

They Call Me Waluigi: I mean, it's okay. I'm not in love with this. But I like how easy his voice is to imitate, there many Waluigi impersonator musicians on Youtube now. Toad (SMB2): I never played Toad as a kid. It was always Luigi or Peach for me, and for obvious reasons. I understand that even in speedruns, Luigi and Peach are still the favored options because they can skip parts of stages. Toad is also just the most boring of the main characters, and the only one who routinely gets replaced by bullshit like Blue Toad and Yellow Toad. God, is it really that much to ask that you just use Wario or Daisy? Just make Daisy the fast and weak one, no one would mind. I don't really mind when the playable character is THE Toad, but when it's just a random nobody Toad, no one wants to play that. You can't convince me that anyone has ever voluntarily played Yellow Toad.

DK and Bowser both routinely lose to Mario, but I feel like Bowser gets way closer. I feel like Bowser would trounce King K. Rool, too. Super Smash Bros. Melee: I mean, it's almost cheating to allow this, but I guess I have to. I'm not a Project M "Melee forever" person or anything, but I think it's hard to deny that Melee really raised the bar for video games in general. Absolutely EVERYONE was playing this game for years. Brawl's general disappointment was partly due to the fact that although it's still fun, it's not Melee. This is truly the SF2 of party fighting games, the one that all others must be measured against. And look at how many have tried and failed. PSASBR... Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble... It's no One-Winged Angel (I'm sorry everyone, I like Sephiroth, I don't care how edgelordy and stupid he is), but it gets the job done. Sirena Beach: My favorite Mario level is New Donk City, but since I already ranked that, and since I'm going to restrict myself just to the mainline games, I guess I'll go with... Sirena Beach. I shat on SMS quite a bit earlier, but I did compliment that it makes any attempt at all to keep things diagetic, and a haunted abandoned hotel is a weird and unique concept for a Mario level. The awkward controls matter less in this enclosed environment, and the electric manta ray boss, while not especially fun to fight, at least looks cool. Again, I never once insulted SMS' theming or use of environments, and this is probably when they're at their strongest.

Mario vs Samus (2005): To this day, this is by far the most convincing evidence for rSFF's existence. Samus consistently outperformed Mario in every match up to this point, both in this contest and in prior contests... and he absolutely ravaged her. I remember my bracket was pro-Samus, I was a complete fool. We can talk about how Samus outperformed Mario against the same characters, but what it really comes down to, and what I refused to accept at the time, is that it's freaking Mario. This is probably also the single most X-stat-destroying match of all time, I can't think of any match of such importance that the stats got so wrong. Of all the matches I've ever gotten wrong, this was definitely the most memorable... well, that and Link vs Draven vs Shepard, but that's a story for another day.

Tick Tock Clock (M64): Oh, the M64 level, okay. I'll throw this one in for free, since I misunderstood the nomination. This is a good contextualization of Mario having to platform around. It makes way more sense than floating bricks everywhere! The use of clock hands is clever, all of the little gears and mechanisms are clever, and the secret way to manipulate the hands' speed based on when you jump into the portrait is... kind of bizarre, actually. Probably the best contextualization of any platforming challenge in M64, honestly. They tried. Is it the best level? Probably not. But it's still pretty good.

Wing Cap: Oh man, actually getting to fly in 3D. It's like a whole different ballgame. I guess that Star Fox for the SNES already existed, but I have to imagine that for most people our age, this was the first time you got to do this, right? Even if it's not actually that exciting or well-utilized, and even if most of the actual flying sequences are things like "collect these coins" or whatever, the sheer scope and freedom it offers just felt like something new and exciting. Like, Mario using this cap is the cover of the game, so you'd be forgiven for thinking it plays a more central role, or that Mario would use it during an important sequence, like fighting Bowser. I imagine if you were born in like 2009, though, this would feel completely stupid.

Cinergi Pictures: They're the ones who made the original Mario movie, eh? Okay, let's see what else they've made. Die Hard 3, Tombstone, Judge Dredd... Yeah, I see why this company went backrupt. I think there's a real difficulty in translating games into film, but in the case of Mario specifically, I think there's an added difficulty of the illogical nature of the games. Nothing makes sense and nothing is meant to make sense, so what do you do? In Cinergi's case, they created pure chaos. Just complete, sort of disgusting nonsense. I mean, everyone loves the recent CGI one, but it doesn't actually make any more sense than this one. In some ways, it makes less sense. And this was Cinergi's second movie! How the hell did it survive? I guess it didn't survive for that much longer, but-- they made The Scarlet Letter? The Alan Smithee film? God, how bad can you be? When the best most in your filmography is Evita... I'll let you in on a secret, though: these movies are still better than Morbius and Madame Web. I'm sorry, I don't hate Dr. Mario being in Smash, but to me, he's just a slight mixup from regular Mario. Bowser Jr.: I refuse to believe that anyone likes Bowser Jr. He serves a purpose, I guess, but he has all of the negative qualities of being an annoying kid and a useless minion character, and the role he fills was already filled by both Kamek and the Koopalings and (for whatever it's worth) Koopa Kid. I guess you can argue that he allows Bowser to show an emotional side, but who cares? And like... I was going to bring this up for Peach, but forgot. In SMS, Bowser Jr calls her "mama," and Peach blinks and is like "I'm your mama...?" and it's like, Peach, how much cocaine are you on right now that you aren't sure if this ten-year-old turtle dragon monster is your son? I realize Peach was never portrayed as a super smart scientist, but I'd at least like to believe that she is capable of counting how many babies she has, and if the number is zero, then capable of figuring out that Bowser Jr cannot be her son. I dunno, let me just be clear about this: no one likes kids in fiction, except for Terminator 2 and Home Alone. Definitely the worst 'main' Mario character.

Bowser in a Bathtub: Why does Bowser fight you in a a giant bathtub? I never understood this. And while it doesn't really look like a bathtub, you can't deny it is one, because Peach is standing on a rubber ducky the whole time. Like, sure, this has to do with the water theme of the game, but who cares? Why a bathtub of all things? The entire game has had a wacky tropical aesthetic up until this one point. Have Bowser fight Mario on some fast-moving awesome surfboards or something. Have Bowser turn into a giant and smash up the amusement park while you turn it against him. Have FLUDD fill up with paint and turn the paint against him! There are many ways to do this, and they choose maybe the worst one. God, is this the worst final boss in a mainline game? I think it probably is.

Mario Timeline: I love this image. We all know it. As a parody of the Zelda timeline, it's flawless done. I even love how the top of it is 1-1. The divergence point being Yoshi rescuing or defeating the babies is wonderful. I love how the darkening of Mario's heart timeline leads him to become a referee. The randomness of where everything is placed is also to its great credit. Tomm Hulett should be proud of himself.

Nintendo (Company): Easily the best and most iconic video game company. They ARE video games. The Disney of video games, except less evil and toxic... but merely less.

Donkey Kong Country (Series): I have a dark secret I must now admit. I've never completed DKC3. I just wasn't in love with it, I'm sorry. Graphically, this is surely the best SNES series. I remember seeing my friend play it in kindergarten and having my mind blown. Completely destroys all competition. Aside from that, though... It's not a hot take to say that 2 > 1 > 3, right? I guess Tropical Freeze counts, okay, slot that behind 1 and above 3. Rebooting Donkey Kong as just his own hero with his own adventures was a good choice, and having zero Mario references in it was an even better decision. It really helps set DK apart as having his own series, with a more coherent story and logic (somehow!), but also some more fourth wall-breaking shenanigans. But in the all-important question of "are DKC1 or 2 better than SMW," I... think the answer is sort of yes? At least for 2. DKC definitely has better music. It has a very specific, coherent theme going, and it's just well-made in general. Sorry if that's an insane take. Was it just DK64 sucking that sort of killed the series? Oh also, if I didn't make this clear before, I hate King K. Rool. He always sucked. Diddy Kong is probably even a better 2P character than Luigi! He's at least more distinct, and the idea back then in the early 90s of the characters having completely different abilities in a platformer was rare. Even when Mario games did it, it's still not AS different as Diddy Kong's cartwheels, DK's strength, and Dixie's flying. Someone please tell me why they added Tiny Kong instead of just reusing Dixie, by the way, I never understood that. Just make her also able to shrink, there's no reason for that second character to exist.

Jump Up, Super Star!: Oh, it's the Odyssey song, okay. It's really good. It absolutely nails the, like, 1940s/1950s style of music, except it actually sounds good. Yeah, I said, music from before like 1975 is mostly trash, sue me. Contextualizing it in-universe as Pauline singing is a little weird, though. What do you think their relationship was like? "Mario, I'm a little concerned. I feel sort of indebted to you for saving my life, but... I don't know how much we have in common? I have political aspirations, and you seem satisfied with your life as a plumber." "Wahoo!"

Pennington: I once showed a picture of Sherlock Holmes to my students, and they all knew him. I showed them a picture of Hercule Poirot, and no one knew him. It's unfortunate, because Poirot is the better series. And here Pennington is investing a murder on a train, exactly like Poirot, but he looks and acts like Sherlock Holmes. Anyway, the incompetent detective who thinks he's hot shit, but is actually pushed along by the competent assistant (in this case, Mario, but Pennington thinks it's Luigi) is a classic trope for a reason. One of the most memorable jokes in the entire Paper Mario series is him telling Bowser that "Luigi" beat him to a star, and Bowser being completely humiliated that Luigi got him. Hm, the Wiki says he's a "Bumpty," a race from Yoshi games, but I don't know if I believe that. He could easily just be a miscellaneous blue penguin. But do you understand why TYYD is the best thing ever, when even secondary characters you see for one chapter are this good?

Bob-Ombs: You can probably argue that this is technically the most important contribution of SMB2 to the greater Mario mainline series. Unlike Shy Guys, Bob-Ombs appear in a million games. They serve a really clear purpose, too, since explosives are easy to integrate into gameplay and story. I remember as a kid, getting Bombette in my party, and being like "won't she just die if she explodes? I wonder if she'll just bop the enemy instead," but no, she explodes, and just survives anyway. Okay, it's Mario, sure. I dunno. I feel like I could make some kind of kamikaze-based analysis of this, but I won't bother. Of note, however, is that Bob-Ombs are the only enemy race in Mario that have ever been displayed as having more than one faction. All Goombas just serve Bowser, etc, but Bob-Omb Battlefield was a legitimate civil war. The lore runs deep.

Kamek: It makes complete sense for Bowser to have a 'main' minion, both so that there's a lesser boss to fight, and for Bowser to have someone to talk to. I'm just shocked that it's still Kamek instead of Bowser Jr. Like, Toadsworth had essentially the exact same role as advisor, and yet he got erased. I guess Kamek also has the benefit of being a bad guy in the Yoshi games, where he's fine, but I don't know. I don't think of Kamek as one of the major Mario characters.

Wapeach: I expected Wapeach to be in one of the first nomination groups. I guess I made this topic a month too late. My feelings on her are simple: Miyamoto was absolutely in the right to shut this down. She'd completely change the dynamic of Wario and Waluigi, she's just a reference to an anime character (albeit, I didn't catch it, because I don't know much about classic anime), and her design just isn't that great to start with. The only part I really like is the Xs cut out of her dress. She's not horrendous, and she is better than some real Mario characters, but the series is better off without her.

Anyway, let me tell you, I think the GBC was just straight-up not up to the task of simulating a tennis game correctly. And what is with these early-mid 2000s Mario sports games and including a ton of no-name randos? I don't want to play as Beth. I'm playing a Mario game, I want to play as Mario characters. Super Mario Bros. (G&W): Finding gameplay of this game was way more difficult than I expected. Why would I ever want to play SMB on a G&W system? The announcement trailer proudly tells me that the system also has a clock. This launched in November of 2021. I can't possibly imagine anything less impressive than your electronic device having a clock in 2021. The only electronics I own that don't have clocks are my airpods and calculator, and if you told me that TI-85s have a secret clock function I don't know about, I would not really be surprised. Smithy: I mean, he's barely a character, but it's fine. As the final boss to an RPG, he's very fine. His appearance is kind of interesting; Mario characters are very rarely mechanical and robotic, they tend to just be creatures or plants come to life. This guy looks like a robotic Santa Claus dwarf king, and you fight him in a dark, gross factory. Smithing his own head to turn it into things to attack you with is an inspired choice. Even though I do like Smithy, he's not as good as Dimentio or the Shadow Queen, but Smithy also only shows up for five seconds before you fight him. Heavy Troopa: It seems the remake renamed them to "Big Troopas," okay. Well, the idea of really fat Paratroopas is kind of funny, and the threat they pose to you is immediately obvious, so I'm on board with this. I like their stupid half-closed eyes, like they're barely awake and able to force themselves out of bed to fight Mario. But I bet you nominated them for the quote "Heavy Troopa's ready to launch," which is actually a really good way to get across to a dumbass 10-year-old that it's about to fly into Peach's face. Strange that these were invented by Mario RPG, and have never appeared in a real game, though.

Super Mario Wonder: It's interesting that THIS is considered innovative and crazy by Mario standards. It does anything differently at all, and people (including me) treat it like a huge innovation. It's like... this is the amount of difference and innovation that would ideally be in each Mario game. Like, imagine if instead of fifteen years of NSMBs, each game innovated and differed as much as SMW. How much different would the "default" Mario game be by now? I don't know! This isn't like the greatest 2D Mario game ever, but it sure as hell blows half of them out of the water. Also, the return of Daisy? I wonder what motivated that decision. Probably an attempt to establish that this will be a slightly off-kilter Mario game.

Goombas: THE video game enemy. Nothing about them makes any sense, except that they tie into the theme of "mushrooms," but you immediately understand that they're here to be enemies. They even look sort of nonthreatening, like they're enemies, but they can't really do much to hurt you, just walk slowly at you and scowl. At least Koopa Troopas have hands. So much of Goomba culture will never be explained, like how they can even manufacture hats, or why they serve Bowser, or why they even bother trying to fight Mario. I dunno, there's just something that screams "mundane weakling" about them, even though if a mushroom sprouted legs, grew to be a foot tall, and started walking at me with a scary face, I'd be terrified.

Goombella: It was a good idea to make goombas be the 'normal guy who teams up with you at the start of the game' companions. The Carth Onasi of Mario, if you will. Goombella is definitely better than Goombario, but I don't know if I'd call her especially good. She is sassier than him, though, which is to her benefit. I don't think I ever used her again after I got other companions. And man, imagine being part of a race where the first syllable of everyone's name has to be "Goom," you'd run out of short names so fast. She got insanely lucky with a three-syllable one.

Chain Chomp: Such a great enemy. You immediately understand the rules it operates under, you immediately understand that it behaves like a territorial chained-up dog, and it just looks cool. Wart: Does Wart... exist? He's only in Subcon, which is just Mario's fever dream. I dunno. As an alternative to Bowser, he is better than Tatanga, but Tatanga is at least not another amphibious green king, which Wart is. What is Wart's goal, even? What is he hoping to accomplish? The Mario Wiki just says he's trying to conquer Subcon, but like, to what end, and why? Even Bowser has more characterization. Like, look at this dialogue: "I am the great Wart!" "Ah, ribbit!" I guess I like his fancy jewelry and cape, it gives him a more hedonistic and idolent appearance than Bowser, and the fact that he attacks by burping bubbles to travel toward you, as opposed to Bowser, who yes breathes fire but also is happy to get up close and personal, does give him at least some IMPLICIT difference, but that's like literally all there is to this character.

Somari: I'm actually shocked the NES can replicate Sonic 1 like this. I didn't think it was powerful enough. The idea of making Sonic 1, but Sonic is replaced with Mario, is really good. The problem is that it should have just been Mario's mechanics instead of Sonic's. Seeing Mario zoom around and turn into a ball as he jumps, I dunno. The wonky physics, I can take or leave it, and I recognize that the game is kind of bad, but the sheer effort of porting Sonic 1 onto the NES, and the idea of Mario replacing Sonic, is worth some points.
Peach Blossom
Wall Kicks Will Work (Star)
Super Mario Spikers
Negative Zone: I don't hate Negative Zone, and I recognize how it represents Luigi's awkwardness and the fact that he's always in his brother's shadow... but it has nothing to do with any game Luigi is in. You can't even say that Sakurai got the idea for using the Poltergust later, since Luigi's Mansion well predates Brawl. Still, this is better than any of the other Mario final smashes that are original to Smash, so it has that going for it.

Mario Mandate: I don't know how real it is, but there must be at least some validity. You look at how weird and inventive the first three Paper Marios are, and then how genericized and bland their sequels are. Until Mario Wonder, every 2D Mario title since World has just been the exact Platonic ideal of Mario instead of doing anything even remotely interesting. Even Wonder is like, just sort of mixing things up a little, and that still comes across as super innovative! This probably does help prevent Mario from having any truly unplayable games, like again Sonic has, but again to compare Mario to Zelda, the most boring and generic Zelda title is Skyward Sword because it does nothing unique or interesting? That was like every Mario game for ten years.
Chill (Dr. Mario Theme)
Green Missile Random Misfires
Torpedo Ted
Mario Finale
Super Mario Run: I have zero interest in autorunners. I've only ever played Temple Run, and briefly. This is the kind of game designed to appeal to like, I don't know, middle-aged moms. I guess I can respect it having a lot of playable characters, let's see... Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toad, Toadette, and then five colors of Yoshi. Yeah, great. Get out of here. Say what you want about Zelda, but it whores itself out for these kinds of games and spinoffs much less than Mario and Pokemon.

I'm sure that Mario Kart purists have some agreement that an older game is the best one, or that DD is the best in the series because it innovated or whatever. But I just want dumb, mindless kart-racing in my Mario Kart. I just want like thirty characters and ninety stages and a bunch of random items and functional controls, and Mario Kart 8 delivers on all of that. Call me a casual, call me whatever. It's the perfect Mario Kart for me personally, even if its roster is bloated with the Koopalings and Peachette and Pink Gold Peach and other trash characters that no one uses, that's fine, I accept that. It even has the best guest character in Link. It's maybe not perfect, but it's close enough for my purposes.

He's probably the best villain character in all of TYYD, and surely the best one relative to the amount of time you see him. This is the closest we've ever gotten to fighting Mario (aside from DK Jr), and it's fun! Everything about Doopliss is fun. That's why everyone likes him. They're the most business-oriented of Bowser's minions. Goombas and Koopas always came across as just being guys doing their jobs, but bullet bills look way more serious. Super Mario 3D World: It's definitely better than Super 3D Land. When it came out, I decided I was going to beat every level, including the challenge ones. Then I just didn't. I appreciate that they actually went the extra mile and gave all of the characters unique powers, and even threw in a fifth bonus character... although Rosalina is ridiculously overpowered. Cat Mario is such a good idea that it even gets to be the power-up featured in the movie! Double cherries are super cool... and then the others are just the standard power-ups, it's fine. I'd say that this game is fun and slightly memorable, but it's certainly not groundbreaking or super interesting. As a random pointless Mario adventure, it blows all of the NSMBs out of the water.

It's shocking how barebones its original appearance is, just a blue Loch Ness Monster, and all later appearances have goofy googles. Definitely an improvement. I dunno, I kind of like them, honestly. Mushroom: I am forced to assume that war means all mushrooms in general, because he is purposefully phrasing these things to be as vague as possible to cause me problems. That's fine. Ignoring the "lol shrooms" joke that we all made in high school, mushrooms obviously have a key place in the series for aesthetics, but they have never once been important in terms of, like, influencing anything. Does that make sense? Like, the mechanics and biology of mushrooms are important only in the sense that there are levels where you jump on mushroom caps that are suspended in the air by stalks, and all other mushroom-related imagery in the series has nothing to do with how you actually play the game. I have no idea what inspired the use of mushrooms, by the way. They're not in the pre-SMB games, and mushrooms aren't associated with size changing, and they don't move around on the ground. Why mushrooms of all things were chosen to grant the player magic powers is beyond me. The problem with mushrooms now is that they're such the default that they no longer feel special at all. You're never excited to get a mushroom, but you might be excited to get a fire flower, you get me?

Saw it last night. It is by no means the Cats of superheroes. Most of the movie is just really boring. The only funny-bad part is the villain's ADR sounding completely unnatural.

Why? I don't really know. She's really bad in combat, too, because any enemy with even low defense completely walls her. I don't know if anyone actually likes her.

Super Mario Galaxy: The most forgettable main Mario game, except SMG2 and maybe LL. SMB1 is the first, SMB2 has all of its weird history, SMB3 and SMW are just really good, SM64 took us into 3D, SMS is the bad one, and Odyssey just gets everything right. SMG gets respect for being generally good, but whatever innovation or interesting ideas it has are wrapped up entirely in playing with the environment, and those are mostly just "here's a cool gravity thing." Like, tell me a single boss in this game besides Bowser and the lava octopus. Tell me a single level with any kind of environmental storytelling besides Rosalina's spaceship. Like, all you need are some aliens you meet now and again instead of Toads, and they can be like "Bowser invaded our planet," and then later you find their planet and it's a city, but Bowser's guys are all over it. e-Reader Functions (Super Mario Advance 4): God, now I have to look this up again. Wait, you need to link a GBA to a second GBA that has a e-Reader installed? You can't just use the first GBA? Bizarre. Okay, so three types of cards: power-up cards, whatever, basically just an amiibo. Demo cards, video of Mario speedrunning a level, wow I don't care. Level cards, installs a new level into the game. Well, that one is actually content, so it wins based just on that, but my instinct is that the new levels will be lazy trash. Let's check them out. You know, maybe I was wrong. They don't look AMAZING, but they do look to be about the same quality as a random average Mario level of the era, maybe a little lower. I dunno, man, Nintendo has to have known even at the time that interacting with physical objects is a pain for these kinds of things. The fact that there is actual real content to them is a bonus, as opposed to Amiibo "you can train an AI to fight without you playing!" content, so it does have that going for it.
Peach Blossom
Wall Kicks Will Work (Star)
Super Mario Spikers
A Day at the Races (Mario Party 2): This is another one of those trash minigames. Whomever gets to choose last is at a huge disadvantage, the Thwomp basically never wins, there is functionally no player interaction (you look at the racers before the race, check to see who moves fastest in their idle animation, and vote for them), and it's basically just another random chance game, except that the first three can sabotage the last by not choosing Thwomp. Conceptually, this is better than the other one, though, because the idea of Mario enemies racing, and each of them having distinct advantages and disadvantages, is actually good. The execution is bad, though.

I have played exactly one of these, which is NSLU. I'm not going to lie here: the Year of Luigi is super unimpressive. He really needed some kickass game to turn things around, and the best he got was another 3DS horror title. Man, the Year of Luigi was to honor thirty years since Luigi's creation. You know what? In 2026, we'll have thirty years since Pokemon.

The Wright Brothers vs. The Mario Brothers (Epic Rap Battles of History): One of their best. I love the theramin and shitty 1910s silent movie look (even if they're obviously not silent), I love how they have to immediately resort to making jokes about having sex with Peach because these real life scientists have nothing in common with Mario and Luigi besides being brothers, I love the sheer stupidity of the premise. The Wright Brothers sections are way better than the Mario Brothers sections, though. Normally, I'm of the opinion that whoever gets the last word is usually the winner, unless the first verse is just overwhelmingly powerful, like in Artists vs Turtles. But this time, the Wright Brothers aren't completely overwhelming, but the Mario Brothers' verses kind of suck. They must have at least considered making the Mario sections be him jumping around saying "Woohoo!" while Luigi cringes, and I'm sure that would make for a worse song, but the fact that Mario and Luigi do have defined personalities, and yet were changed into totally different people isn't perfect. The comparison is Superman, who in his video is very arrogant and crude, but he does still have the confidence and charisma that the real Superman has, so I dunno.

Super Mario Christmas Carol: See, the reason this doesn't work is that it's actually too clever for Nintendo. Wario as Scrooge, DK as the Ghost of Christmas Present, Waluigi as Jacob Marley, Baby Mario as Tiny Tim? This is way too smart and attentive to detail, especially DK. In reality, the story has ghosts in it, so Nintendo would make Luigi be Scrooge, and all of the living characters would be Toads with different-colored spots, and the ghosts would just be Boos, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come would be King Boo, and Jacob Marley would be played by a ghost Goomba or something. And they're never letting Waluigi into anything, you're out of your mind.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga: This is the only game in the series I played. It was... fine. It's not Paper Mario, but what is? And the idea of controlling both brothers at once is a cool one. "Like Paper Mario the game is an spiritual successor to Super Mario RPG." Wow, this Wiki needs some serious editing. Luckily, I'm too lazy to fix it. I think the RPGs benefit more than any of the other games from having unique villains that aren't Bowser, and I think the reason for this is obvious: it lets Bowser do other things, it lets them have motives that aren't Peach-centric (although, in the five Mario-based RPGs I've played, three of them had villains with Peach-centric plans anyway), and it lets you have more characters with wackier personalities. Like, yeah, everyone loves Fawful, and for good reason. Huh, Toadsworth is in this game, what was his last non-remake appearance? I... actually can't find the answer. Does anyone know when Toadsworth last appeared outside of a remake?

General Guy: At first, I supported his coup d'etat. I know it's a controversial position, but he did live in a very unstable country, and the government was clearly corrupt. There was a possibility of setting things right and stepping aside. I guess I was too naive, though, because after he made that deal with Russia to put Wagner mercenaries to guard his local resources, it became clear that he didn't care about the people at all. Forget the explicit atrocities; after a point, something like 92% of his country's GDP was wrapped up in the export of resources to Russia and the import of Russian weaponry. I know that American interventionalism is a controversial subject and sort of a remnant of colonialism, but I don't think anyone can pretend they were sad when the Green Berets busted into his mansion and ended things. I'm not going to pretend that the Americans did this purely out of the goodness of their hearts, but things have undeniably gotten better for the people in the time since, so I'm going to say this worked out mostly well.
Beware the Forest's Mushrooms
Booster (Super Mario RPG): Oh, I thought he'd be the sword. So be it. "hen Exor crashes into Bowser's Keep, Mario, Bowser and Princess Peach are sent flying in different directions. While Mario lands safely at his house, Peach lands at Booster's Tower. In response to this, Booster decides he must marry this woman who fell from the sky. Booster locks Peach on the balcony of his tower." Can Peach go ten seconds without being kidnapped, I swear to God, Mario rescues her from Bowser and she immediately flies to get kidnapped by this loser. He doesn't even seem that interested in marrying Peach, mostly it's just a thing to do for him because she randomly dropped in. I did not at all remember that he marries Valentina in the ending, okay. I kind of like his hideous appearance, to be honest. He's one of the Mario RPG characters I can imagine in a real game.
Shigeru Miyamoto
Wario
Bikes (Mario Kart Wii): Yes, I actually do remember back when bikes had the ability to do wheelies. It made them absolutely superior to karts if you knew what you were doing, and it basically had to be taken out to keep the game sort of balanced. There's now effectively no difference between them and lightweight karts anymore. It's disappointing, but it had to happen, because balancing wheelies was obviously never going to be possible. Restricting our discussion purely to MKWii, though, I always felt like I was playing suboptimally if I didn't use a bike, so I just felt compelled to try them... but yeah, they were kind of fun.

Back when there were no rails, and my sister simply could not get anything but last place, and would throw the controller down in frustration. I like the idea of every Mario Kart having a different super long, complicated final level that's a big rainbow turned into a road. It's such a part of Marioness that it's even in the film!

Mario (Character): It's-a him, Mario! I wonder where Mario ranks in the most well-known fictional characters of all time. Like, is he more famous than Superman? I don't know! I'll give Mario the second highest tier, but honestly, he is, as we all know, a noncharacter. The most noncharacter of them all, except for Peach. The easiest comparison is Link. Link, to me, is designed to be the embodiment of "the Hero." He's always has his little hero's journey story going on, he always has his classic sword and shield, he always has to obtain The Magic Sword that lets you defeat The Villain, he always has to achieve whatever number of deeds before riding to fight The Villain, the world is always at stake, and so on, and so forth. Mario is the hero of his story, but everything is taken less seriously (even the most serious Mario title is way cartoonier than the least serious Zelda one), he doesn't look or act or sound like a The Hero, his skills aren't similar to what you'd expect from The Hero, he doesn't need weapons or magic to triumph, and he never gets anything at the end of the story as a reward. I guess Peach baked him a cake once. Mario games are almost the anti-Hero's Journey, in that nothing is learned, nothing is really at stake that much, and nothing needs to be achieved besides punching Bowser a lot. I think this is why Luigi is such a more compelling character, because he's the one who has to overcome his fears and insecurities to achieve things, he's the one who needs help from others to accomplish his goals, and he's the one who sort of learns and grows (in comparison to Mario, at least) at the end of his journeys. Then again, maybe I'm just wrong, because I still like Mario way more than Sonic, who also has all of those qualities.

Nabbit: He's fine. One of the better random extra characters added since, jeez, what counts as modern Mario? He's from 2012, I don't even know if that counts anymore. The pun in his name is really good, and I like his kerchief. Is he the first intentionally overpowered player character added to a Mario game to be easy mode? I'm fine with Mario adding a character to the recurring roster who's neither hero nor villain. Honestly a better morally ambiguous character who is ambivalent toward both good and evil than Shadow the Hedgehog.
Bowser
Supernintendo Chalmers: I rewatched the clip for this. I like Chalmers going from happy to angry when Ralph says his name. He'd probably get over it if he ate an unforgettable luncheon, though. Having played a ton of MP3 multiplayer, this is the worst mini-game of the N64 ones, right up there with the MP1 rotate control stick mini-games. It's a "memorize the pattern" but done incredibly slowly. And it almost always goes to the very end and is a draw and no one gets coins. Just an annoying game.
Oh, I didn't even consider the slowness, which is weird because I watched it in action. I can see that being murderously annoying.

Mario's Picross: Picross is this old? I thought it was a 2000s thing. Anyway, contextualizing the logic of picross as Mario being an archeologist searching for stuff isn't a bad idea. Super Mario Spikers: ... A cancelled volleyball game I've never heard of? Well, okay, that's plausible. Wait, it's a volleyball-wrestling game? And Nintendo rejected it solely because realistic wrestling moves are off-brand for Mario? Am I crazy for thinking that you could easily make unrealistic wrestling moves? Like, Mario grabs someone and throws a fireball at them, or Yoshi grabs someone, eats them, and spits them into the wall? Surely it's not that difficult to make this idea work. That said, I have difficulty connecting volleyball to wrestling, it's difficult to imagine two sports with less in common. I dunno, I guess luge + baseball would be harder to make work. Honestly, I don't feel like we lost much by not actually getting this game.

Super Princess Peach: This is one of those games that exists, but no one ever thinks about or talks about. Look, man. I said that Peach is the ultimate video game "the Girl," and I meant it, and I was right. You want to talk about harmful stereotypes in gaming, Peach finally gets her own game where she's not a damsel, where she's the hero who needs to rescue Mario (and Luigi and Toad, just to establish that there's no one more competent than her... And yeah, I guess I would say Toad is better at his job than Peach), and the gimmick of the game is just that Peach has to feel emotions really hard to solve problems. Being happy makes you fly, being angry makes you catch fire, being sad makes you produce water that makes plants grow, and being calm makes you find a husband and make a sandwich for him. Like, even in 2005, I was like "does Peach really have nothing you can make a game out of for her, other than that she is a girl?" Like, I'm imagining a more traditional Peach platformer, and you keep the part where Mario and Luigi are kidnapped, and like, you design it around her floating powers, maybe you give her the ability to use power-ups like Mario, I don't know. Someone made a conscious decision to lean into Peach being "the Girl," and this what we got. I do like the ending, where she rescues the boys, then ignores Luigi and Mario takes her into his arms even though she's the one who rescued him. I obviously can't rank Peach's upcoming game, but making it stageplay-themed where she has to dress up in different oufits to gain new powers isn't a bad idea. I wonder if they'll bother explaining why Mario doesn't just solve the problem for her, though. The enemies are grape-themed? What a bizarre idea, that has nothing to do with theaters. I guess because peach vs grapes? I don't really think of those as opposites, though. Oh, because peaches are sweet and grapes can be sour? I GUESS that makes sense, but that is not immediately obvious. Alright, let's check out these costumes... Swordfighter, Detective, Patissiere, Kung Fu, Ninja, Cowgirl, Figure Skater, Thief, Mermaid, Superhero. Yeah, sure, I guess. It does look better than SPP, so I'll give it that.

Green Missile Random Misfires: This is less terrible than Brawl's random tripping, because at least you have control over when you misfire. But I hate using this mechanic. It's not reliable, and having one horizontal recovery and one vertical recovery is very awkward. Yeah, I realize that fits Luigi's awkwardness, but the result of this is that I haven't played him since like Smash 64. Maybe when I'm unlocking stuff or something, I don't remember.

Imagine my disappointment to learn that this is also the name of a Mario Party 3 minigame. God, the N64's graphics are so ugly. Is this game just a "repeat the buttons pressed by the computer" thing? God, how many of those are there in video gamedom? Almost as basic as sliding image puzzles. Contextualizing it as having to follow the rhythm provided by jungle-dwelling tribal shy guys is really weird, too.

Mario and Wario (Game): I watched some gameplay of this, and man, I forgot about Mario throwing up the peace sign when he finishes a level. He doesn't still do that, right? It's been a really long time since I can remember him doing that. Don't tell me it's in Galaxy and Odyssey, and I just have brain problems. Anyway, the music in this game is like the worst, most un-Mario stuff ever. Completely generic medieval fantasy-esque music for a lot of it. So, the logic of this game is that Wario was flying a plane over a forest, threw a bucket off of it, and it landed on Mario's head, and a fairy felt bad for him and decided to help guide him? Why can't Mario just remove the bucket? Ugh, anyway, the actual gameplay of having to summon blocks for a blind Mario to walk on isn't bad. But like... I just have zero interest in ever playing this crappy early 90s puzzle game. Luckily, it was never released outside of Japan, so I'll never have to. I'm just going to say, if Nintendo released this today, surely instead of just a dumb bucket, they'd have like Mario's hat be cursed to be really big and get all over his eyes, or something like that, right? Like, having something on Mario's head that's not a red hat is so off-brand that they'd never even think of doing it again. Even Link is allowed to wear other hats, but not Mario. Like, in any other franchise, surely there'd have been at least one joke by now where Mario and Luigi switch costumes, right?

Bob-omb Battlefield: One of the definitive first stages of all time. I sure as hell don't remember the first stage of Galaxy or Odyssey! I only remember Sunshine's first stage because I had to start the game over like five times to finally power through it to the end. Didn't beat that game until like 2012. Anyway, I think it's kind of interesting that there's just this battle going on between black and pink bob-ombs? Obviously the pink bob-ombs are angry about bob-omb racism and are fighting for their rights, and Mario heroically joins their cause because he's the hero. But like, in all seriousness, is this the only time in Mario history that there's just a straight-up battle going on that Mario isn't really party to? There's just an unrelated intra-bob-omb war going on well before Mario enters the fray.

Shy Guys on Stilts: Actually, was Yoshi's Island the game that introduced Yoshi being able to float? I just realized that. Contrary to the name, there are several shy guys in this stage who aren't on stilts. Look, there's not a lot for me to talk about here. This level doesn't have some crazy mechanic or insane difficulty, it's literally just a stage of walking and jumping around with some shy guys on stilts. The most difficult part is probably the dark section. I guess it is weirdly long, though. Don't know what motivated that decision. Is this a beloved major level among Yoshi lovers? Because to me, it couldn't be more of a "oh, it's that level" level.

Super Mario Sunshine: Back in the 2000s, everyone on Board 8 considered this to be the weakest full console Mario game. And yes, it is. I cannot in good conscience say it's better than SMB1, 2, 3, SMW, SM64, SMG, SMG2, SM3DW, or SMO. I'm not even sure I'd say it's better than the NSMB games. What it comes down to with SMS is how much stock you place in controls. Because the game controls like ass. SM64, it gets a pass, but every other Mario game needs to feel perfect. Mario needs to have the most polished, flawless controls in gaming. And SMS does not. Mario is so floatly and weirdly frictionless in this game. FLUDD adds an entire extra dimension to his movement, but it's not actually precise. It's just as awkward as Mario's normal movement, like every time you panickingly tap the hover mode (and you will, every time you flub a jump), you're going to float forward slightly despite not wanting to. And the fact that you have to replace the nozzles as you go along, it's like, one more awkward extra thing, even though it's just the new power-up. And then you have the added awkwardness of the FLUDDless levels, which wouldn't be a problem in a normal Mario game, but here are a nightmare because of weird Mario controls. So in pure gameplay terms, this is probably the weakest real game. And yet... this game introduces an entire city for you to explore, which we didn't get again until New Donk City (which yes completely embarrasses Delfino Plaza), the levels are diagetically integrated into the theme of a tropical island resort, and everything looks really nice. It's very difficult to put my feelings about this game into words, because it's simultaneously kind of bad and kind of good, but not damningly bad or overwhelmingly good. It all melds together into this really uneven mess, as opposed to SMG always being good, but having nothing memorable in it whatsoever. And I'll say this: even at Mario's weirdest and worst, his game is still way, way better than the best Sonic, Crash, Spyro, Ray Man, or Earthworm Jim game. Like, imagine this entirely playable, kind of nice-looking 4/10 game being the worst thing in your catalog; Mario's mainline games are THAT strong. Even Zelda can't promise that. Even Pokemon flubs some of its single-player experiences. Is there any other series with as many games as the mainline Mario where even the worst one is still basically okay, just kind of disappointing?

Super Mario 3D Land: Sometimes 3D, sometimes 2D, always 3D... graphically. This is possibly the most forgettable mainline Mario game. Like, seriously, 3D World at least has that it got an expansion seven years after the fact and has five playable characters. This is just the prototype for 3D World, which is already not exactly the best Mario game. Like, again to compare Mario to Zelda, Mario has way more "shitty random pointless little adventure" games than Zelda. Also, I looked up this game on the Wiki again and actually looked up the plot, and Peach manages to get kidnapped by Bowser twice. In a random side game. Embarrassing. I hope she gets kidnapped at least once in the new movie, just for old time's sake. Or I hope Bowser kidnaps Daisy in the next game, and Daisy is just excited to finally get some attention.

Wario Land (Virtual Boy): I'm told this is the best VB game, which given its library of 22 games, is maybe not the most impressive title ever. I watched part of the game on Youtube, and God, the VB color scheme, use of 3D, and double vision thing makes everything kind of painful to look at. The idea of Wario being able to launch himself into the background actually is kind of interesting and novel for the time, but like... I don't know, even in 1995, it's not THAT novel. God, some of the backgrounds are basically impossible to look at thanks to the color scheme. There's this one part with giant spiked balls swinging from the background to the foreground on a really a complex temple background, and I just don't want to look at it at all. And like... I know I gave a lot of shit to the Koopalings, but they ARE better than the bosses in this game, featuring such famous faces as "Dinosur Fish," "Sand Fish," "Tank and Operator," and "Demon Head." Look, I'm chalking this game up as "okay ideas and execution, but severly held back by the technology it was built with." Even if I'd owned this as a kid, I'm sure I wouldn't have bothered beating it. I can definitely see why this is the most loved VB game, but they should have known that the technology for VR wasn't there yet. It's still only kind of here, and we live like thirty years later.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World (Film): Man, this is really pushing it for "Mario-adjacent," but I guess I'll allow it. I haven't watched the Netflix series, but I have read the comics and played the game. I bought the game on Steam again because I wanted to replay it, but it keeps crashing my computer, and I don't know why, does anyone know why it would do that? Anyway, this movie. It's fine. It's casted pretty well, at least. I know people complained at the time that Cera isn't a good Scott, but he's fine. Everything about this movie is fine. I liked the joke at the end where it looks like he's going to fight Nega-Scott, then it cuts to them just being friends and parting on good terms. Compare that to the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, which are better in general, but rely way too heavily on jokes like that, to the point where any time things seem serious, you just immediately know a joke is coming. This is the only joke like that in the movie, so it works much better.

Mario Kart: Super Circuit: I played this game quite a lot as a kid. Perfectly good entry into the franchise, perfectly good translation into the handheld sphere... But again, like I said for some other game, it's kind of fascinating how basic the list of characters is. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, DK, Wario, and Bowser, just the mandatory ones. No frills here. Wait a second, according to the hidden stats column on the Wiki, Luigi is equal to or better than Mario in every way. And Toad is listed as 5 speed, 1 weight, but his hidden stats say 2 speed? I don't understand how these stats work at all. This is super confusing.

The Final-Final Test Badge Marathon: I watched a speedrun of this. It's like... Yes, the is is the appropriate level of difficulty for a challenge level. I can imagine myself beating this. I won't go back and do so, but if I really wanted to, I'm pretty sure I could beat this level. I like the lightning section, the pounding the platform into the goop section, the stupid talking flowers, the vine climbing section... maybe not the invisible section, I don't know about that ones. Let me tell you, I got to the second-to-last level in Celeste, and there's a message that says "go back and collect all of the hidden items and come back lmao" and I was like "no u" and just watched the final level on youtube, and I was like "there it no possible way I could ever beat this even if I put in the hours to learn, I'm just straight-up not good enough at video games to do this." Again: screw kaizo stuff.

Mario Tennis N64/GBC Transfer Pack Functionality: You know, at least in theory, connecting your different games using this to access extra bonuses is a cool idea. Compare that to Amiibos, which are just blatantly "how do we squeeze more money out of people?" Okay, so what does this unlock... Four extra characters. Oh, ALex, Harry, Nina, and Kate, of course! My favorite Mario characters! And the Wii, Wii U, and Switch versions of the game don't include them because there's no transfer pack, how lazy and pathetic. And you can unlock six more courts! How nice. Yeah, no. Even as a kid, I would not have bothered unlocking this stuff even if it would have only taken five minutes. I view this as purely a way to squeeze more money out of you, as opposed to the Pokemon transfer pack uses, which were actually valid and some value.
Wario's Woods
Giga Bowser Punch: This is not like a definitive Bowser thing. Bowser's final smash should be, like, him on the clown copter, but I get that that's Bowser Jr's thing in the context of Smash. Either make it some kind of super firebreath, or he knocks you onto a bridge and then cuts it so you fall into lava, or Kamek shows up and curses you, or something like that. Low tier for sure, Smash specials need to be references, and this is just nothing. That said, Bowser is at least associated with attacking things, so it's better than Dr. Mario's and Daisy's final smashes.

Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!: I read a synopsis of the plot, and let me tell you, the most shocking thing is the plot twist that there's a prince who's just a regular guy and he's engaged to Peach. And then he just marries her instead of Mario. It's like... the recent Mario movie did things right. You don't bother trying to have a logical story with Mario. Even Zelda, which is a million times more logic-focused than Mario, is still something you don't bother with story with. Huh, this is the first Mario media to establish Mario and Bowser are both in love with Peach? How bizarre. God, the Toads on the screen cover are so horrifying. Anyway, I'm sorry, this is a mildly interesting piece of Mario history, but I have zero interest in ever watching it. What little I watched on youtube looks like trash.

Doctor Finale: Like, for God's sake, it has nothing to do with Dr. Mario the game besides pills. The only good thing about this smash is that I once knocked out my friend with it. As I used it, I said "I prescribe pain!" and when he died, he punched me.

Mario Party (Series): The second best Mario subseries to play with friends or family. I can't call it skillless, but the randomness and importance of the luck is even more pronounced than in Kart. Kart is, like, a really good player will never lose to a bad player, even if they're really unlucky. A bad Mario Party player can just get a "switch stars with someone else" space at the last second for no reason. It is fun, and it definitely lets Nintendo show off all of their insane minigame ideas, but like... there comes a point in every Mario Party game, about 2/3rds of the way through regardless of length, when I'm ready for it to be over. It's somehow way more exhausting and tense than Mario Kart. At least if you're losing, Mario Kart is over quickly. Mario Party can last what feels like forever.

Pipes: The only remaining conceit of the original premise involving plumbing. Like, there actually is a tiny nugget of logic involved in traveling through a pipe, since they obviously connect Place A to Place B, but everything else is insane. Why are the pipes large enough for Mario to pass through? Why do they never connect to other pipes, but instead just jut out into the air? Why are they green? I've never seen a green pipe in my entire life.

Anyway, I remember when I was like seven, I had a friend whose mom installed a parental control on his computer. He was so angry that he took the software and installed it onto her computer to block her from accessing her work stuff. He got grounded for like an entire month for that.

Peach Blossom: I appreciate that the Peach drawings on the side are a reference to Super Princess Peach, but let's not even talk about THAT game. Why do peaches even appear during this? Peach has never actually has association with actual peaches. I kind of appreciate that this is one of the few final smashes that won't kill the target by itself, which is very Peach-like, so I'll give it points for that. But it's not really a reference unto itself, so it's not getting many points on that end.
Wall Kicks Will Work (Star)
Lou Albano
Shadow Mario Paint: I... guess. This is better than Giga Bowser Punch. It is a reference to a game with Bowser Jr in it, so on that basis alone, it's in the top three Mario final smashes.
Practice Makes Perfect (Legacy X)
Flutter: "Anagram didn't know about this obscure second form of wigglers that have never been in a real Mario game! I'd better nominate it." Wait a second, the first sentence of the Wiki says it's the "imago" of a Wiggler, what the fuck is an imago? The last stage of an insect undergoing metamorphosis? Get the fuck out of here with that. There's no way anyone with a zoology degree has time to write the Flutter entry on the Mario Wiki, so my question is, did someone who already wrote on the Mario Wiki stumble onto this word and then add it, or did he search it out to make the Wiki more technically accurate? God, why is it "Wiggler," someone who wiggles," but it's "Flutter" instead of "Flutterer?" Anyway, these things look dumber than Wigglers.
Toad (Character)
Blindfolded Mario Maker Guy
Dong Dong Never Die
3-Up Moon: "Mr. Producer, fans are complaining that we use magical stars too much in Mario games. What are your orders?" Why does this even give you extra lives? The green mushroom isn't a star!
Mario Bros.
Peach
Pauline
Stanley the Bugman
Chill (Dr. Mario Theme)
Torpedo Ted
Mario Finale: I appreciate that this is very direct and simple, which is appropriate for Mario, but it has nothing to do with any of his games. Mario has never used anything like this. Like, how many power-ups does Mario have that could serve as his ultimate power-up? A blue shell, a cape feather, a starman, a double cherry, Kuribo's Shoe, raccoon leaf, Lakitu's Cloud, mega mushroom, the hammer, the wing cap? There are so many options, and instead Mario just pulls this out of his ass. And don't tell me that it's a reference to Ultra Flare from Mario RPG like the Wiki tries to. Shut up, no it's not.

Mario Characters' Final Smashes

I kinda want to read what you think about them, but if that's cheating I'll just go with Mario Finale first.
I ranked all of the Mario final smashes because I felt like it.

- Cape Feather Tier
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Mario Kart (Series)
Super Mario World
Cape Feather
Admiral Bobbery
New Donk City
Super Mario RPG
Super Mario Odyssey

- Kuribo's Shoe Tier
Rosalina
Luigi Wins Without Doing Anything
Super Mario Bros. 3
Kuribo's Shoe
Paper Mario
Super Mario 64
Bowser (RPG Versions)
Mario Kart 64: Yeah, I said this about Paper Mario, but there are like eight N64 games worth owning, and this is definitely one of them. I don't actually like the original Mario Kart that much, it's janky as hell and not as good as the SNES F-Zeros. But Mario Kart 64 cleans up all of that with its greater power and 3D, and isn't as awkward and "experimental" as Double Dash. Mario Kart Wii is just a straight upgrade, though. Once they decided to just make every Mario Kart the same thing instead of takings risks ever, Mario Kart 64 was never going to be able to compete. God, it's so strange looking at the character list. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, DK, Wario, and Bowser. Mario spinoffs are NEVER this minimalist anymore. There're no extra useless characters padding the resume, like Baby Daisy or Bam-Bam, it's just "here are the eight characters who matter. Figure it out." It's like something from another time, I guess because it is.
Fire Flower
Super Paper Mario
Waluigi
Mario Tennis (N64)
1-1 Theme
Yoshi
Super Mario 64 DS
Minus World
Stretchy Mario Face (Mario 64)
Culex
Count Bleck
Bowsette
There Will Be Brawl
Mario, the Idea vs Mario, the Man
Luigi
Bayonetta Nintendo Content
Thwomp
Charles Martinet
Hammer Bros.
Brawl in the Family
Rawk Hawk
Glitzville
Pirahna Plants on Parade (Level)
Super Mario Maker 2
Hexagon Heat
Mario vs Crono Rivalry
Poltergust G-00: Yes, this is how you do it. Easily the best Mario Final Smash, and probably one of the best final smashes in general, because it's actually a reference to a goddamn video game that Luigi is actually in. It completely nails exactly how Luigi behaves in the game, it looks cool, it's perfect. Luigi is absolutely the only Mario character who gets a good final smash. The worst final smashes are the ones that are just the character doing some fancy attack that's not actually in his game or calling his party from his game to help him.

- Hammer Suit Tier
Paratroopas
Dire Dire Docks (Theme)
Link (Mario Kart)
Dr. Goomba Tower
Italians
Chris Pratt
Triple Jump
Timed Hits
Super Mario Bros. Movie
SupperMarioBroth
Super Mario Bros.
Postgame Optional Challenge Levels: I view these as exclusively a good thing. Well, maybe they should be accessible before the postgame, but it's fine, I'll allow it. It's nice of them to add extra stuff to challenge you and keep you playing without it being DLC, and because it's Nintendo, it's never going to be kaizo-level nonsense, or ridiculous Mario Maker garbage. That said, I was not able to beat the 3D World postgame stuff. This isn't a level, but I like that 3D World even adds a postgame CHARACTER with Rosalina. She has now shown up in real games more than Daisy and Wario, and has shown up as a playable character as many times as each of them.
Isle Delfino
Beep Block Skyway
Vivian
Bowser
Hell Valley Sky Trees
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Cappy: Absolutely superior to FLUDD, I think we can all agree on that. It's actually insane that of all the Zelda games, Link teams up with a companion quite often, but Mario only does it twice ever.
Shy Guy
Valentina
Lack of Mario vs Sonic (Character Battles)
Smash 64 Commercial
Pirahna Plant (Smash Bros)
Mysterious (Mario Paint)
Peach's Castle
Mini-Yoshi (TTYD)
Koopa Bros
Hurly Gloves
Tubular
Koji Kondo
Staff Roll (Mario Kart 64)
Autumn Mountain Battle Theme
Fawful
Axem Rangers
Mario Lemieux
Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy: I like how blunt the name of this level is. Alright, I'll just go ahead and click the Wiki's article on Fuzzies. "It is the sole member of the enemy group Dudim Phreykunoutonthis." Wha... what? "Dudim Phreykunoutonthis is an enemy class in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its reissue, Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3. Its name is a pseudo-scientific corruption of the phrase 'Dude, I'm freaking out on this,' referring to the disorientation and dizziness a Yoshi experiences whenever it comes into contact with or swallows a Fuzzy, the only member of this class." I don't... I don't understand who makes these Wiki articles. But the idea of a level in a game for little kids involving psychadelic fuzzy balls is funny, so I'll allow it.
Mario/Sonic Rivalry
Swapping Cartridges
Tanooki Suit
Delay Lama
Super Mario Bros Plumbing Commercial
Warp Whistle
Beware the Forest's Mushrooms
Shigeru Miyamoto
Wario
Super Mario Land 2
FLUDD: I have mixed feelings about FLUDD. I think it's uncontroversial to call SMS the worst mainline console Mario game (well, Lost Levels, but whatever), and a lot of that is down to it feeling way less precise with its controls. The jumping in the game is complete ass, and Mario somehow feels less precise than he does in Mario 64! But much of that is made up for by FLUDD, which lets you to mitigate basically any mistake by hovering in the air for a second. And like, yeah, FLUDD makes SMS easily the most complex Mario platformer in terms of controls. It has no competition at all in terms of how many 'things' Mario can do during gameplay, and the ability to hover in midair really is a crazy, unique idea for a Mario game. And I shouldn't really fault FLUDD for the fact that the game doesn't quite nail the execution of its levels or ideas, right? So, I guess I don't hate FLUDD. This is also interesting in terms of, like, this being the only time Mario's solution to a problem is technological in nature? Mario's power-ups and abilites are always either his own skills (jumping, punching) or magic granted to him by other entities (spin attack, hat possession). FLUDD is the one time that the game's gimmick is just a mechanical device built by some guy. It's so odd that Professor E Gadd shows up for two major games right in a row, drops two major backpack-based devices into the brothers' laps, became a major character for several spinoffs, and then... just sort of disappeared. He fills what you would think would be a major role, being the only scientist in the series. Like, most series would use him as Scientist Man, who comes in to explain the plot and build a device that lets the hero react to things... But the Mario series has so little plot, and whatever help Mario has can just come from magical beings, so E Gadd just has little presence outside of of the Luigi's Mansion series. He's by far the most important Mario character to never be playable in a Party or Kart game, right?

Mario Clash: It's kind of amazing how far VR games haven't come. 1995, and I see this simple black-and-red VR game of Mario running around in 3D, knocking monsters off of things. Take us to the future of 2024, and what's the definitive VR game? Half-Life Alyx? Resident Evil 7? I have never once thought "man, if I don't a VR set, I won't be able to play the super fun game _______ that I'm looking forward to!" Still, Mario Clash deserves some points for being sort of the first 3D Mario game, I guess? I'm actually kind of shocked that it has a unique name instead of just being "Mario Bros. 3D" or something; that's what they would do today. And like, yes, this game obviously sucks, but I can't tell how much of that is due to the game itself versus the infamously terrible console.

Tumble (Mario Party 3): I actually kind of like the idea of each Mario Party having a new host. Too bad that they don't do that at all. Of the sixteen Mario Parties, two don't have hosts, and most of the rest just have Toad, Yellow Toad, Blue Toad, or Toadette, and even most of the ones who do have unique hosts also just have Toad. Like, for God's sake, MP7 has Toadsworth, who is clearly the best Toad-related host possible... and then he just never shows up again ever. It is completely bonkers. That said, Tumble it kind of gross. He has a Toad's face, except with wider eyes, no body, and a die for a hat instead of a mushroom. And like, I'm sorry, am I alone in thinking that his die hat should have been different numbers at different times depending on his mood? God, the last unique host we got was MC Ballyhoo in MP8, and that was in 2007. Am I being controversial by saying the best host is the Star Spirits in MP5? At least they're sort of unique.
Angry Sun
I'm a Chuckster
Captain Toad: What game was he first in, Mario Galaxy? Goddamn, I thought it was Mario Odyssey. Oh well. I never played his spinoff, so I can only judge his appearance in Galaxy. He's a fun mixup to the normal game, turning things into essentially a no-jumping perspective puzzle game. That's all he is, though. He's not blowing my mind or anything.
Do the Mario
Fireworks (End of Level)
Eely-Mouth: The idea of a giant hideous fish with gum disease that's leaking out into the water and causing pollution, and when you cure it, the level is cleared of the toxicity, is great. And it's super ugly, too. Like, so ugly. I think it's because of the teeth; fish with human-ish teeth always look hideous. It looks so much better and uglier than the eels in Majora's Mask. It's actually amazing that this guy only shows up once, like Mario reuses bosses all the time, but this one guy only shows up a single time. I assume it's because he's underwater, and they already had Gooper Blooper to cover that position. And yeah, the pun for Meely Mouthed doesn't make a ton of sense, since the boss isn't timid or evasive, but sure, I'll accept it.

Peach: Princess Peach is the most nothing character in all of video games, at least relative to how much screen time she gets. Sure, she's got more going no than Banon from FF6, I guess, but she's in roughly two-million video games, and he's only in one, and he's so unimportant that you don't even learn what happens to him after the world is destroyed. There is nothing to Peach at all. AT ALL. Even in like 2010, I saw people drawing her or playing her up as a video game sex symbol, and she isn't even that. The most I can say for Peach is that she's the ultimate video game "the Girl," you know what I mean? This character was born purely so that Mario could rescue her. How many jokes have been made about her being useless and getting kidnapped over and over again? Here's the thing: she deserves those jokes. Even Zelda at least like telepathically tells you what to do after she gets kidnapped most of the time. Even Zelda managed to chuck an ocarina into a drainage ditch. And yes, Peach is indeed playable in SMB2, but aside from that, it took until the 2010s for her to start showing up semi-consistently as a playable character in real games. Like, who has more playable appearances in the mainline games: Peach or Blue Toad? I don't even know. But I'll say this: I've played Mario Kart and Mario Party with multiple girls, and they always choose Peach or Daisy. Always, always. And in Smash? Peach, Zelda, or Kirby. If Peach's job as a character was to be a character for girls to choose in multiplayer games, then she definitely succeeded. I dunno. Sadly for Peach, she doesn't benefit from the RPGs as much as Bowser. Even though she gets to talk and display her personality more often, her personality is mostly just "good guy," so there's not a lot to do with her. She's fine in the RPGs, there's no problem with her, but she's not being a completely different, far superior character like Bowser, so she doesn't even have that. By far the best Peach appearance in existence is in the movie. Like, I recognize that Movie Peach is just a completely different person than Game Peach, that they have nothing in common at all as far as personality goes, but it doesn't matter at all, she's still the superior Peach. And she's not even that good! By the way, I see that I put Peach next to Pauline in the rankings, which was not intentional.

"It's a stone, Luigi. You didn't make it!": Jesus Christ, Luigi, you can't just throw a stone football directly into your brother's chest five feet away from him, that could break his ribs! I was going to say Luigi was in the wrong here, but I mean, Mario looks directly at what Luigi is carrying, sees that it's made of stone, and says Luigi can't make stone. And it's like, bro, you can clearly see that it's shaped like a football. It looks nothing like a stone you'd pick up off the ground. So I can only assume that Mario is super contemptuous of sculpting as an artform.

New Super Mario Bros. (Series): I made a joke earlier about the word "soul" in relation to video games, but seriously, if you're looking for technical perfection in design matched only by utter soullessness and lack of imagination, there is no more masterfully-produced game than any of these. When I think of just generic Mario, I no longer think of SBM1, I think of these things. They feel like fake games, like I just imagined them by combining all of my experiences playing other Mario titles without even thinking. I have to believe that these cost nothing to make, too. I remember the first came in May 2006, right before I graduated high school, and while I've changed a bit since I was a teenager, my opinion of NSMB has stayed the same ever since. And yet, I know that if I'm some stupid 10-year-old who doesn't know anything about anything, NSMB probably is going to interest me more than an ancient game like SMB1, so I have to concede that there's at least some element of nostalgia involved. But at the same time, no one can possibly tell me that these games have any imagination to them whatsoever, so I don't feel too bad about ranking them poorly.

Beware the Forest's Mushrooms: I praised Mario RPG quite a lot earlier, but one thing I didn't talk about was its music. Specifically, I can't remember a single track from it... except this one. This is THE Mario RPG theme. It's so whimsical and mysterious, and feels very woodsy, too. The nearest equivalent I can think of is the Lost Woods theme from OoT, which has the elements, but a different emphasis: Lost Woods is much happier and adventurous compared to Forest's Mushrooms. Or maybe I'm just full of it! It's up to you. But even though I like the song well enough, it's not something I ever listen to outside of the contexts of playing the game or ranking Mario things. It's like, yeah, I sort of am saying this isn't as good as Mario Kart 64's Staff Roll theme.
Shigeru Miyamoto
Wario: I'm not really a Wario fan, but I do think it's mildly interesting to compare him to Shadow the Hedgehog. Except that I don't know anything about Sonic lore post-1995. I Know that Shadow is like actually a robot created by Robotnik's grandfather, right? Something like that. What I actually can talk about with Wario is his use in the Mario series, or lack thereof. I think it's pretty clear that the original intention of Wario was to be another villain besides Bowser, exactly like Tatanga. Except Wario immediately after his first appearance, and I mean IMMEDIATELY, became the hero of his own series. And sure, it's like a """hero""" thing, but the point is that he no longer opposed Mario in any way. Even his one later appearance in a real Mario game is just him as a playable character in 64 DS. And I wonder what inspired the decision to make his a gross troll? Like, he's not like that in his first appearance. That has nothing to do with reversing Mario's traits. I can only assume that since Wario is meant to be greedy and hideous, they decided to make his personality like that as well. I think sort of the most interesting thing about Wario might actually just be his name, though. The fact that M upside-down is W, and that makes Wario, and Wa = evil in Japanese, but War = also a bad thing in English, is just an insane lucky coincidence. I'm not sure if I want Wario back in real Mario games. Probably not. He doesn't really serve any purpose anymore, and he barely served a purpose in the first place.

Disco Devil (Theme): ... is this disco? I'm gonna be honest, I don't actually know what defines disco from non-disco. Like, to me, Abba just sounds like pop music. There's a definitive Middle-Eastern theme going on in this theme, so I'm assuming it's for a desert stage.

"So long, gay Bowser!": I know he's supposed to be saying "King Bowser," but it really does sound like "gay Bowser." It's crazy how this Italian accent makes "King" sound like a completely unrelated, very different word. I thought at first that the Switch version changing the line to "Buh-bye!" was to remove the problem, but it turns out (according to Knowyourmeme.com, the most reliable source on the internet) that it just uses the Japanese version of the game's audio, where Mario never says "Bowser" because that's not his name over there.

Mallow: I have played Mario RPG like twenty times, it's one of my most played games ever from childhood, and I've never used Mallow after I got Peach and Bowser. His damage just doesn't compare to Geno's or Bowser's, his support doesn't compare to Peach's, and he doesn't even have the benefit of looking cool. It's weird, too, because Mallow has probably the longest character section of the game. There isn't really a Geno or Peach section of the game, where you learn about their history and they have to make decisions or whatever, and Bowser's is mostly just him yelling at his former minions, and Mario is Mario, so if you're talking purely about which character has the most characterization and backstory, it's actually this guy... and it's barely integrated into the plot. So strange. Mallow also gets some points for not having the most annoying Smash fanbase. I have no idea why people think Sakurai is ever going to add an obscure secondary character from an early 90s Mario spinoff into Smash, instead of the next Pokemon or Fire Emblem advertisement.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door: I know I said that Mario RPG is flawless, and I stand by that, but TYYD is even more flawless. It's like the perfect video game. PM1 is great and everything, but it's Nintendo's first attempt at this. There are numerous ways you could have improved it, and TYYD does most of them. The gameplay is tighter, the badge system is better-implemented, the companions are mostly cooler (Flurrie...), there are more secrets to find, the locations are wackier, the references are cleverer, even the use of Luigi is better, even the final boss is better, even the use of Bowser and the new final villains are better, even the section where you play as Peach and get spied on while naked in the shower by a horny computer is better. Like, PM1 takes you to a fortress, a ruin, a mansion, a lava stage, a grassy field, an ice stage, and a star stage. TYYD takes you to a run-down shithole, an inverse coloration forest, a wrestling tournament, a haunted city, a jaunty pirate island ruled by the ghost of Hernan Cortez (???), a train-based closed circle murder mystery, and then an alien base. And yes okay the inverse color forest isn't very original, but everything else is super clever. Like, the nearest comparison I can think of is, weirdly, Baldur's Gate vs Baldur's Gate 2, where the first game is pretty good, and then the second game actually does just go in and fix everything, and add a ton of cool new toys and ideas, and actually does do everything a sequel should. Like, I've seen people complain about almost every Mario game ever, but I've never seen anything for this game by anyone except glowing praise and abject worship. Absolutely perfect in 99% of ways, can't recommend it enough. If you were going to ask me to list the five best games ever made, this... I don't know if it's on the list, but it's definitely in the top five RPGs, at least.

Paper Mario: God, the N64. It has like eight absolute must-play games, and then everything else either has a better version on the PC or PS1, or is just bad. Paper Mario was one of the very few games that actually made you want to buy the system. It's not perfect in the way that TYYD is, but it steals everything good about Mario RPG, makes the story a little more generically Mario, and gives us one of the best aesthetic ideas ever. And it's actually interesting how much this game does NOT lean into the paper gimmick. TYYD is what introduces that, and the later games of course ruin the series by taking it way too far ("what goes onto paper? I know! Stickers!"), but here, it's just a goofy little style thing. If this game had just used regular Mario 3D graphics, it would be essentially the same, just less distinctive. God, sorry, I want to praise this game more, but I view it as the game that learned to walk so that its brother could later learn to run... and then its second brother could learn to walk, but stumble a bit, and then the family doesnt talk about its other brothers, theyre sort of disowned.
Super Mario 64: THE 3D platformer. It is insane how Mario and Zelda both made the leap to 3D with no difficulty at all, but Sonic completely fumbled the ball, and still fumbles the ball. Like, they got 3D Mario and Zelda right in one try each. Zelda moreso, but it had two extra years in the oven, and so was able to implement the amazing technology known as a "recenter the camera behind you button." God, remember mid-90s 3D games, where they'd have completely insane controls because no one had yet standardized "left stick moves you, right stick moves the camera?" Mario 64 just gets everything right in one try. Is it quite as precise and responsive as Mario Galaxy? No, it's not. But if you can forgive some mid-90s jank that every game was guilty of at the time, then it's probably the best 3D platformer until... God, I don't know. It's way better than B-K and DK64. Definitely better than SMS, Galaxy, and Galaxy 2. Definitely better than any Sonic, Crash, or Spyro game. I don't know, I've never played the Ratchet and Clank or Sly Coopers. Does Prince of Persia: Sands of Time count as a platformer? I admit to liking it more than Mario 64. But while I am of course a major SM64 supporter, I don't know if I can say it's better than the other best Mario games. It's like, it nailed all of the difficult 3D elements in one try, but it's not QUITE a flawless masterpiece. There is jank. The fact that SMS failed to surpass it is sort of its own failing rather than being due to perfection on M64's side, you know what I mean? SMS has a sort of a more interesting setting and coherent theme and atmosphere, but it's bizarrely worse on the platforming and staging than Mario 64. SMG is better on that angle, and has finally erased all jank, but the fact that I can remember entire stages from M64, but you could probably show me a fake stage from Galaxy and I'd never be able to tell, speaks to its own failings to be new and interesting rather than just polishing up what M64 started. Anyway, M64: good game. I first played it at the dentist's office. You should also go the dentist and play this game.

Waluigi: In contrast to Wario, whose name working because Wa = evil and War = bad thing in English is just a coincidence, Waluigi just shoved a Wa in front of Luigi's name, flipped the L on Luigi's hat into a Lambda and called it a day... and it doesn't work at all. It's just the stupidest thing. Everything about Waluigi is lazy, stupid, and pathetic, and that's what makes him so compelling and perfect. In Japanese, does he come across as stupid and useless as he does in English? Because in English, he is the Platonic embodiment of a shitty, worthless non-character. But even more than that, Waluigi is a man defined by what he isn't. Wario is Mario in reverse, Luigi is Mario but lesser, and Waluigi is a reversed and exaggerated version of that. Six degrees removed from Kevin Bacon? Waluigi is two degrees removmed from Mario, twice. Is there any other character like that? I guess if there's like, Bizarro Supergirl, that would be an equivalent to Waluigi. Does that character exist? Someone who knows more about comics than me tell me. Oh, did you want me to actually talk about Waluigi? He's a worthless piece of trash character. Being the lamest, most pathetic character in video games is what makes him the best Mario character. And one more thing: anyone who wants him in Smash is crazy. What would he even do? He would just have to use all of the sports and party games items to pretend he's a real character.
