Perhaps someone smarter than me (not a big challenge) could explain.1) free & easy hosting. might not be much of a difference for random users, but anyone who previously had to manage/pay for the actual servers themselves benefited greatly from the migration. 2) for me personally, the ability to mute/adjust someone else's volume just for myself was fucking amazing and revolutionary. other programs probably have the feature by now, but discord was the first i was aware of to implement. I can't possibly describe how big of a deal it was. i used vent and teamspeak for wow back in the day, and hearing people heavy breathe/chew into their mic/be way too loud/be way too quiet/argue with their parents/ignore their screaming baby/barking dog/chirping co2 detector was maddening. Begging the owner/leader/host/admin/whatever to do it for you was not an acceptable solution 3) i think discord had better background noise detection/cancellation first. could be misremembering this one, though. I guess I've been kind of a discord drone, i feel like every complaint about the program has been due to people using it improperly- it's exactly the same as/better than slack, just with a gamer skin instead of a corporate one. And the big problem with slack is people doing everything in slack without leaving a trail in emails/a shared wiki-like/anywhere permanent. That sounds like the primary complaint about discord as of today We always knew discord would enshittify eventually. Yes they give you locked chests and lockers and stuff so you can technically make a decision between those and doors. But there are so many locked doors that eventually you just can not progress sometimes.I agree that keys can feel bad before you learn how all the rooms work, and especially before any of the meta-progression kicks in. I was gonna say there is a good "default" strategy ( foolm0r0n posted... And yup, got room 46 with that. I feel like I skipped so much.That does seem like the best way to get there. | banananor 04/03/25 2:00:33 AM #19 | devs are free to charge as much as they want, but they've been making more money than ever before, so there really isn't much for them to complain about. it's not my fault they decided to hire thousands of people. i guess we'll see how supply and demand works out. i personally don't care how good the value is, something weird would have to happen for me to even consider buying an $80 video game at this point i'm trying to imagine the scenario. it'd have to be something with online multiplayer that completely captured the zeitgeist, yet would evaporate sooner rather than later. For me personally, I'd need all my friends to play it and only it for around a year and essentially socially exclude me if i didn't make the purchase. i don't see that happening any time soon --- You did indeed stab me in the back.
