I was worried i was going to regret not supporting this hard, im glad it got in without my help! will always be a strong recent memory that happened the same month as noms: actually on the day of the eclipse found this game for a surprisingly modest price at a used game store in the middle of nowhere Texas---i bought it near exclusively because i love the soundtrack so much i felt obligated. but i do some interest in the game itself too. Since my own Saori Kobayashi nom fell flat, i am glad she is still represented with this. does everything I love about her inventive tonal & rhythmic tendencies.

I LOVE THIS SONG. I think Ryo Kawakami has this particular approach to megaman music that has been quite perfect for me for some reason. his melodic style is clearly megaman but his arrangement style is always full of this cool substance. mesmerizing looping sequences. etc. That stacked CHORD hit mixed with the snare hit is deeply influential on my taste in music in some many ways. and i love the crunched down sample quality

pryapisme vgm ANd tigran vgm? all the prog bands I liked in 2016 becoming for games. this is less surprising than Tigran to do this though. despite loving this band I am not sure I even realized this existed, well I will have to listen at some point. oh yeah this contest has varra in it too but that's even less surprising to have vgm than this

what aisle are you on LOL (very difficult and close match.) I actually didn't realize I was going to have to make this choice until now. but thsi is way too much the feeling I seek for me to give my vote confidently for the zany prog song no matter how much i literally was a big fan of pryapisme for very many years in my life. surprisingly close match, like infuriatingly so (i can imagine changing this choice on relistens, but I have done many now & swapped repeatedly. but have come to this conclusion at this time)

LONG time fan of Norfairtje original metroid 1 version, THIs version. etc. I could go on. while the odd time of the original is important to me, this more than makes up for that lost by introducing other forms of weirdness I adore.

I will still always respect Hitomi Sato's undeniable distinctiveness as only she could have possibly written this

teh,brooding sequence going from moody piano to church organ in faster than light resonates with me. I don't have a particularly strong conviction with this match and i find it hard to evaluate due to their opposing styles. if slight things were different about either song it'd be an easy choice for one or the other, but as is it's actually the closest match for me so far.

it's so funny to have this between stage of prog metal<->weeb rhythm game but really they are born from the same hole as far as key origin of intent, just opposing aesthetic, but they are in harmony in compositional instinct

I am not sure I comprehend how well this fits with the previous track when i put them against each other

I at some point determined that The Crystal Key may be the #1 most nostalgic game for me? it IS the first myst clone i played (rather than myst series itself), seeing it at a game store on the shelf and thinking it looked just like Myst & Riven!! Saying that as someone who's entire top 30-50 favorite games is games in this style now, so that's fairly profound to me. it takes me right back to teh early 00s in a split second. It's not just When I played it though, it's the fact that much about it contains easily identifiable era artifacts heightened in such a way that is difficult to find deliberately (both music & nonmusic), even in other games i played/that were made around the same time in similar style. This track is super quiet, like in terms of actual dB of waveform in the original raw file from the game, and at this quality level, this results in a beautiful fuzziness when sounds are at the border between silent & audible (actually i ironically think YT's compression may obfuscate THIS compression artifact in itself a bit). This exact sound is one of the unintended artifacts of tech limits i find most powerful, one of the things I most seek that is largely exclusive to vgm storage methods. but also these exact synth patches. Beyond my fond association, this really does do what I look for compositionally, subtle as can be there's lots of parallel motion, stacked intervals as timbre and somehow it all manifests into one or the most viscerally powerful calming things I have ever heard. I would say there may not be a single piece of music on the planet I get as calm upon hearing as this one. I need that lately, I haven't been very well. As much as my identity has been one of edginess and chaos, this piece is proof that you can inject a dose of the most viscerally powerful subduing energy using the same exact composition techniques as the most unhinged abrasive prog I love. The tonal language may parallel, but what matters above all, is the context you intend to convey.

unmistakably Mitsuhiro Kaneda, I love that guy and his wild tonal sense that always leaves me on the roller Coaster in the fog that is so thick that I don't know where the heck I am or where I am going next but it will always be exciting, much more than if it was a normal situation for roller coaster ride. I guess that is the appeal of space mountain
