Sewers
[ai]
Jungle Journey

match 2 hard, at first i thought not in a good way but listening today it is still hard but now in a good way lmfao what

From TunnelScene:
Sewers (Shadowgate 64)
The Magnificents (Lost Eden)
Jungle Journey (Musashi: Samurai Legend)

I was worried i was going to regret not supporting this hard, im glad it got in without my help! will always be a strong recent memory that happened the same month as noms: actually on the day of the eclipse found this game for a surprisingly modest price at a used game store in the middle of nowhere Texas---i bought it near exclusively because i love the soundtrack so much i felt obligated. but i do some interest in the game itself too. Since my own Saori Kobayashi nom fell flat, i am glad she is still represented with this. does everything I love about her inventive tonal & rhythmic tendencies.

another ze person who nommed this speedruns crypt of the necrodancer nom haha

I love deep forest

333rrfffnice chord sweeps.

I LOVE JUNYA NAKANO'S INFLUENCE OVER THE COURSE OF EVENTS ON THIS EARTH

Sensei's Theme (CO Power)
[ai]
Jungle Journey

Match 1 is a little rough, I really like the "fake Ocarina/Majora's Mask" vibes that Sewers goes with.

Jungle Journey is interesting, it feels like a song from Threads of Fate that got injected with the lively synths from PSO2 - I'm thinking of Yggdrasil in particular.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp - Sensei's Theme (CO Power)
Xenosaga Freaks - [ai]
Musashi: Samurai Legend - Jungle Journey

MATCH 1

Don't really like Sewers. It's okay in the beginningthough I wouldn't have voted for it here for that part alone eitherbut 0:37 and beyond is a noticeable step down for me. Though, that rapid string section at 0:45 in the background's not bad. It is, however, made worse by the other instrument that plays here.

Sensei's Theme isn't all that great either, but it's definitely the pick for me here. It's nothing special, but it doesn't do anything I dislike, unlike Sewers.

MATCH 2

Stylistically, The Magnificents is pretty neat. I'm not sure that I like the execution all that much, but I can definitely get behind this otherworldly feeling I get from this song. Feels like something that would play in an abandoned ruins or something, but there's something potent and magical inside. The instrumentation, though, isn't really something that stands out to me. Maybe with a different arrangement, I'd like it more! One thing I'll say is that the deeper vocals during the part at 1:06 almost sound like they're saying "nyaa" so I'm just picturing a deep-voiced cat meowing as the backup singer lol.

[ai] is pretty nice! I like it the most for the vocals. During the beginning part of the song, the vocals have an interesting synthetic feel to it that almost makes it feel like you're listening to a Vocaloid. The instrumental is okay, but the vocals definitely make the song as good as it is. The chorus-sounding part at 1:42 is really nice too with the vocal melody! I think it's kind of funny how everyone in the image for this video is all smiling and happy and then there's KOS-MOS who just looks thoroughly unamused.

MATCH 3

Funny that Jungle Journey is by Junya Nakano because this does feel very Threads of Fate haha. This song has a really good atmosphere to it with the plucky instrument in the beginning and the part right after it too. Okay that's like the whole song basically lol, but yeah, it's pretty good! Definitely my favorite of the songs from this game in the bracket.

I'm Your GPU's pretty decent. I'm not too big on the robotic vocals, but it's catchy enough. Not to pick in this match though, unfortunately. The strings at the beginning are probably my favorite part of the song.

Shadowgate 64: Trials of the Four Towers - Underground (Sewers): It sounds pretty cool albeit super outdated (though I can't really fault the song itself for that even if it does hurt my enjoyment a bit). Some parts of the piece even sound vaguely similar to the SMB underground theme (I wonder if it took any inspiration from that?). Nothing amazing, but pretty solid anyways. Also bonus points for harpsichord.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp - Sensei's Theme (CO Power): Ooh, so jazzy! Pretty nice progression and overall fun song. I just wish it was longer.

Lost Eden - The Magnificents: The mysterious vibe is cool, but I don't really like the execution of said vibe other than some of the instrumentation. The vocals feel a bit overbearing even if they do add to the mystifying tone the piece is going for, and some of the sound effects took me out of the song for a bit. Interesting piece but could be improved.

Xenosaga Freaks - [ai]: The vocals are tolerable so that's kinda good I suppose. The instrumentation, while repetitive, is pretty neat. Really fun bass and incredible synth runs. Overall, a simple inoffensive song that is enjoyable enough.

Musashi: Samurai Legend - Jungle Journey: I wish there was more variety in the instrumentation, but what's here is good. Melody is solid even if I wish it would progress more. Nice piece overall that could use some tweaks.

Astros Playroom - I'm Your GPU: Man, the instrumentation is so cool, but I'm personally not a fan of the robot singing which brings it down in my favor. Fun song that I would prefer as an instrumental piece.

Had to listen to the Astro's Playroom soundtrack for a different project and did not have many kind things to say. For this song, my note is "if Jay Tholen gave up"
