I don't think this is a hot take at all. Returnee seasons are great as a novelty but the problem is that from basically seasons 16-34 they were SO overused that people began to hate them.

oh fair, i don't think it's a "hot take" to dislike, like, caramoan or game changers. it is a hot take to dislike micronesia or heroes vs villains - though i'm not saying i dislike them, just that its more of a fun bonus thing for me than it is "real survivor". and winners at war was a total waste but that wasn't just because of it being returnees.

casual reminder that australian survivor: titans vs rebels is an excellent season that you should all watch if survivor NA isn't doing it for you

i am like 5 seasons behind on australian survivor and i want to watch it because its so much better than survivor NA (well, i haven't reached the apparently bad seasons yet) but man its daunting. but i want to catch up before the next season for sure so i should just watch 1 ep a day so that i can get there.

I'm actually still kinda surprised it won't be until 50. I thought they might finally go for it at 48 - I mean that'd match All-Stars timing but for the "New Era". They're gonna have a lot of players to pick from.

New Era casting has actually been really great - the issue was too many people are of similar life background and philosophy on how to play Survivor, but each of the people individually have been great choices for the most part.

My double unpopular opinion is that a) I don't like returnee seasons much anyway so I'm glad there's less (I think the essence of Survivor is 16 strangers figuring each other out, and returnee seasons with pre-gaming and legacies just isn't the same, though they can be very fun) but b) I actually think a new era returnee season is more interesting as a concept, because of how the new era has become so... y'know, its all 18 superfans with the same meta, with this "no hard feelings" attitude that makes it feel like a casual board game night, so i wanna see just how much they can push this metagame now that they have experience under their belts

I remember finding the start of this one really awkward. Like, if DD was "this is nice but doesn't have the spark of the original trilogy", this was like "this feels entirely alien". But I think as it went on, I did get into the case a bit, and that's probably because of the divination sceances.

Okay I forgot Darklaw was even the prosecutor tbh.

What was she trying to prosecute Espella for though? Like was there an actual crime scene with a set of circumstances and evidence and witnesses to go through, or was it like "well you did this crime and to explain why, I am now going to go back 20 years and talk about the past... (where we also will not get into any particularly ace-attorney-like specifics of the events)"?

But there's no point in answering me, I really don't remember the details of the case. I don't even have any clue what the three different components listed in the OP are. All I definitely remember is that while playing it, I felt like it was just the end of a Layton game where they explain all the mysteries and stuff, but they had to have a courtroom and a judge and a "murder" but it wasn't at all the most pressing part of the case.

That's not really how I remember it (though we've established I don't have a great memory)

Like sure, someone probably died and some witnesses definitely get on the stand, but the "prosecutor" certainly wasn't trying to prosecute your client and most of it amounted to people just explaining the overarching plot to you, not actually getting into the nitty-gritty of a specific murder like in a typical ace attorney case.

i just wish they didn't have him go full evil. like, why do writers feel the need to do this? he had perfectly coherent motives as a "for the greater good" villain, it was workable! why do you always need the evil smile and to make them completely heartless? even beatrice fell victim to this trope a bit which was also dissapointing since she's a great complex character.

For the real test, we need to find someone who has never played an Ace Attorney game and have them try this as their first.

Easier said than done since you'd want to find someone who is open enough to the concept (not someone who hasn't played them because they hate text-based games or murder mysteries) yet somehow has never played AA (or danganronpa because that has the same gameplay system basically)

then again when i say "like" i mean "like" in the same way there are annoying people i know irl who i conceptually like but hate actually being around

but i also don't want to know what any survivors are posting on social media, really. i feel like the social media clout and "becoming part of the survivor family" are sort of related to the "its all just a game, i don't even get hurt when i'm voted out" attitude from recent years and i just want people to go on survivor because of the game, not to get followers. shoutout to rocksroy for being the only cast member on 42 without a twitter. Not sure what show you're watching, but there are still plenty of stupid twists that are disrupting the natural flow of strategy and discouraging interesting gameplay.

I'm probably just so used to them at this point that it's starting to feel normal. I guess that's what the producers wanted!

But what twists? There's still the dumb mergatory immediately followed by a split vote but I feel there's less random shit ending games out of nowhere. Journeys give less stuff because you can fail them and "knowledge is power" hasn't been uttered a single time, thank god.

This season of Survivor has been great. It's so refreshing to see people getting emotional and fighting all the time, compared to the "good vibes only, it's just a game ^_^" we were getting for so many seasons. I feel like there's less sob story flashbacks, more time showing in-game interactions, and tribal councils actually have real things discussed instead of just a bunch of analogies about how Survivor is a complicated game because you don't know who to trust. Feels like less random bullshit twists and advantages too. I thought by now we'd be having extra vote nullifier nullifiers. So credit where credit is due, they've actually listened to feedback and improved the show, I think. That plus the longer eps and I feel like I actually like Survivor again.

Like, english has, what, hundreds, thousands probably, of phrases and sayings and terms that (of course) only exist in english. If you translate literally and only include phrases that are used in japanese, it's like you're painting a picture except you've removed dozens of shades of colors from your palette "because those shades don't exist in japan". But you can't translate the japan-specific expressions because they're not translatable to english, so you just end up with... less possible phrasings.

And you can't trust the guy making these pics anyway. Like, just looking at the japanese lines myself (as an amateur), it's clear to me that there are lots of nuances about the way the characters are speaking that are completely left out of the "literal translations" on the right. Like for example, in the last quote, the way she says "yo' hands" instead of "your hands"? Imagine if I gave a literal translation of that and I said she said "your hands". But she didn't, she said "yo' hands" which conveys a much rougher tone. That's what the "literal translations" are doing. She's slurring a lot of her words but it's coming out pristine in the "literal translation".

This sounds like these people are saying they want the game to be AI-translated (because they hate localizers), not that they think it is. Their issue is that it was clearly localized by humans.

These people don't understand that it's completely normal for game localization to "change" lines, because the same tone/intention from the japanese can't be conveyed by a literal translation, and certain expressions, when translated literally, won't sound natural.

Like if the best you can come up with (the #1 leading example they started their thread with) is dialogue where all the lines are the same except one of them has "rub-a-dub-dub" in it then you really don't have a case. Especially when they mistranslated one of the lines themselves.

People like this have taken the few cases where localizers did take extreme liberties or inject american politics into lines, and have gone crazy over it, now seeing red at every single localization change ever. Games from 15-20 years ago that were beloved for their localization, they'd hate if they saw it now, nitpicking every single line for not being enough of a literal translation.

Played til second boss.

First Impression:

I like it. I no longer expect to agree with Jason Schreier.

Of course, I haven't played Suikoden II, so I can't compare if it's lacking "heart and soul". But so far I like all the character designs, the voice acting, the writing. Battle animations are sick.

I have no clue why IGN says it has a slow start. When I hear slow start I think Persona, I think Suikoden V which takes hours to get to gameplay. This game has you in your first dungeon after a short 15-minute intro! And to the second dungeon shortly after! Maybe they mean it'll take a while before the grand epic military stuff starts.

Oh and I hate Lian.

My theory (for this Sea of Stars discussion thread) is that, yeah, reviewers have to play so many games, they probably don't, like, get fully enraptured by them anymore. So, Sea of Stars, on the surface, is beautiful, has nice music, cool character designs, good UI and combat feels good and looks flashy at first... and that first impression just carries them. The fact that the game sort of fails to hook you or really have the charm of the games it's inspired by, doesn't register for them because they play 3 games a week and don't get hooked like that anymore anyway so it's all the same to them. Like having dulled taste buds when you're sick. "Yeah, this game probably tastes good, because it's presentation is really great!"

I'm not surprised at the ratings. I am a bit surprised to hear how "oldschool" (read: lack of modern conveniences) the game is.

You've gotta think, if all these outlets that gave Sea of Stars raving 9/10+ reviews think this game is a 7/10, then oof, how bad is it?

I feel like I'll probably agree with Jason Schreier's take but I'm going to try it anyway.

I didn't love it either (as you could assume) but I tend to stay quiet about that because the people who love it really love it and I feel bad bringing down their vibe.

But this style of storytelling isn't really my aesthetic anyway. I do appreciate what they were doing with the story. Most of my feelings are just gameplay-related where I didn't think the moment-to-moment gameplay was that interesting (because of lack of enemy variety and how most rooms felt very similar when it came to evading said enemies. ah, grey rectangular hallway. run around the edge here... another rectangular hallway, let's just swerve around past this enemy... repeat...)

I didn't look up any explainers of the story after beating it so I still have no clue what any of it means.

My only idea for the sequel is that Tyrion should defend a Demon at some point. Either as the hook in the very first case, or I guess maybe in the final case. That's assuming we go in further on the angel/demon world stuff, which we may not, I think the post-credits hook seemed like more political stuff in some other country so idk (don't think the spoiler bars are needed at this point but just in case)

Yeah, you have to be really careful with feedback. People (especially in 2024, but it's always been this way) have a tendency to want everything to go quick, to "respect my time", etc. I can think of so, so many pieces of media (usually very famous ones!) that are constantly accused of being "too slow". I'm sure you're well aware of this yourself as a writer. But (as a non-writer) I think there's a reason lots of these things are "too slow". Proper buildup is really important for a story, and while you can sometimes go too far and end up with plodding cases like AAI2, there's probably a reason that happens so much more often than the alternative. Better to err on too slow because at least the payoff for the buildup is really earned.

A lot of people are just looking for media to give them their next "hit" of dopamine with an exciting twist, cliffhanger, plot development, etc, they don't necessarily realize how important the buildup is for those moments. The customer is not always right, in this case. And if you're a new writer, I can understand why you give in to the instinct to just try to please people, because it must feel horrible if your already small number of playtesters drops and someone says "eh i got bored it was too slow" and stops playing. Whereas the feedback from people who feel it went unsatisfying quickly might not have as much of an immediate sting.

Voted "Maybe/I don't know/Unsure" because I sort of disagree with the premise of the question. Discord and a message board are just not really comparable (unless we use this threads feature which I've never even seen used before tbh so idk how similar it is). I'm already on the discord but the convos there aren't the same as following a thread here so I just don't think it could replace it, and if anything, the chat scrolling by even quicker would make me less likely to try and follow it.
