Yeah, when the trades are pubbing info on exit polling, you'll often see something like...

"Suicide Squad's B+ Cinemascore polling doesn't inspire confidence in a strong second weekend."

And it's reasonable to kind of look at that, and think, "that doesn't seem so bad!" But it's really not great! These are quite curved.

Yeah, they do.

Xenogears is in kind of a weird spot. Takahashi finally struck gold with Xenoblade Chronicles. That series is a.) profitable; b.) iconic to the Nintendo image; c.) 15 years old and counting.

None of this means Square Enix can't remaster or even remake Xenogears, of course. But I wouldn't be surprised to learn they're just kind of apprehensive about the whole arrangement outside of the rare merchandise runs.

The other thing is, legacy IP revisits at Square have long been dictated in no small part by who among the senior staff happens to be pushing for it.

Take SaGa - Akitoshi Kawazu clearly has a passion for it, and that passion keeps it going, even with the notably slim budgets involved. Koichi Ishii left Square ages ago, but when a new mainline Mana game was announced for the first time in ages, it was simultaneously revealed that the series' creator would be deeply involved in its production. Live A Live's remake would never have happened if Takashi Tokita hadn't been trying to make it so for years and years.

I want a Xenogears remake so bad I can taste it, but I'm not sure there's anyone with major pull at the company anymore who would champion its cause, and that's before all the other issues involved with this. At this point, I'd settle for a re-release more recent than the friggin' PS3.

Finished Canon of Vengeance once and Canon of Creation once on Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. Now, I get to do Godborn mode, so I'll go with the other path in Canon of Vengeance.

Whew, good game. I feel like the story could be outstanding if there was, like, an entire game's worth of events before this one (with some drastic edits to the first third or so of this to accommodate it). I said it to some RPG Site friends, but the broad strokes of SMT5 could be, like, the back cours in a four-cour anime or something.

Stuff goes huge, like, royally huge, and if this was a more lived-in world, it could rival something like Xenogears by the end. But because there isn't that build-up, a lot of it just sort of happens, you know? This isn't a Vengeance spoiler, btw. If anything, Vengeance is a little better about this than before!

But I digress. The game's more about the gameplay, and it shines. Vengeance seriously ups the ante. So much has been addressed. Battles are better, overworld exploration is better, performance is no longer middling.

Oh, and for all my "it's not about the story" thoughts, I'll say this much: SMT5 builds on demon personalities ever more richly. Any Persona-only MegaTen fan who wants to get to know the creatures you're constantly adding to your compendium, go with some of these non-Persona games; you're in for a treat.

Has a character you dont like ever managed to make you emotional?

I'm not the biggest fan of Michael Burnham, the lead character in Star Trek: Discovery. I wouldn't go as far as to say I dislike her, but given how so very much of the series is centered on her first and foremost, in a franchise that's often more ensemble-oriented... I'd say it counts enough, if by a hair.

Sonequa Martin-Green's acting, however, was seldom less than fantastic. She could pull me in even when I didn't really want to be in the moment with Burnham herself.
