I saw "character revealed to have x identity and Discourse surrounding it" and my mind made a connection to a somewhat related issue.

I'm gonna give you one more chance to save yourself, literally just one.

Here is the context:

The character didn't go on some soapbox to announce they're bisexual. They didn't announce they're bisexual at all. They just happened to have a scene where they kissed a fellow man.

Do you think this is "announcing" their sexuality? Please explain.

Oh, absolutely. I'm not denying it's fun as hell to watch, and is a LOT more talent than somebody like me would ever have, for example. I just was relaying what I was told by a friend who actually jumps rope, since somebody brought up Lauren Jumps, who is technically more talented. What Lauren does is less impressive to the senses, but is apparently tougher to actually do cleanly.

So tc saw a topic and got to thinking, and made this topic. And you assume, because of your poor reading comprehension and predilection to be ready for a firefight with anything on the internet, that it only has the worst intentions. Never mind what tc has actually said.

This is the flailing of a man who knows he fucked up.

I'll repost cause I was too late on the edit:

The TC literally admitted they made this topic based on 9-1-1, a show they don't even watch.

You're not looking too good here, chief.

Of course CE would try to twist tc's message into an awful thing with a quick jerk of the knee.

He didn't.

He, quite literally, admitted that he did.

He made this topic based on finding out there's a bisexual character in 9-1-1, from a topic on this board, and he doesn't even watch the show.

The 9-1-1 topic, obviously, but I know nothing about the context.

Yes, because he's apparently getting upset over a character in a show, that he doesn't even watch, kissing another man.

The 9-1-1 topic, obviously, but I know nothing about the context.

I'm gonna spoil this for you: The character didn't "announce" they were bi. They just... Ended up being bi, and it was "revealed" by a character relationship. But them merely existing, as a bisexual character, is considered "announcing" it to people like you, apparently.

Very curious as to what prompted this.

Based on the timing, and since TC specifically mentioned fictional characters, the 9-1-1 thing.

Western style literally depends on the genre.

Comedy shows tend to make the characters look more cartoony, to multiply the effect. More serious shows, such as superhero shows, tend to be more realistic.

Some people are gay or trans or any other number of things and don't feel the need to announce it to the world, and there is nothing wrong with that. The same should go for fictional characters and (I don't know why this needs to be said) celebrities. You do not need to perform your identity in order to be valid.

You're one of those people mad about 9-1-1, aren't you?

Police shows are probably mostly watched by people who support the police, so the backlash isnt exactly surprising unfortunately

Sorry for the triple post, but I wanted to note that I don't support the reality of police at all. I DO support the fictional portrayal of police and what they SHOULD be, in shows like this, Law and Order, The Rookie, and so on. That said, the key word there is "fictional," unfortunately. I support the idea and ideal of police, but not the unfortunate reality.

EDIT: That said, you're right, a lot of people watching probably DO support current police, and that's sad, and it also makes sense why they're freaking out over this. I just wanted to note that you can enjoy the shows as entirely fictional portrayals of something you WISH actually worked as it should, too.

I've been meaning to watch it because I admit I'm kinda a sucker for procedurals like this.

But also as I stated, it's literally just the same word repeated. If someone/thing was named hathat I would see the word "hat" and notice it's repeated twice. So yeah maybe I'm just biased because I knew the word "hoot" existed and was associated with owls, however I don't think that's particularly mind-blowing for a child to know.

To be fair, we had stuff like the anime to go by, too. Hoothoot literally looks nothing like an actual owl until it becomes Noctowl, so it's not necessarily as clear as it appears, so assuming "Oh, it's an owl, so it's Hoot-hoot" isn't necessarily as obvious as it seems. I don't know if I would have known it was Hoot-hoot as a child or not, because the first time I ever saw the thing was literally when the "Who's that Pokemon?!" revealed it and said the name. If I had seen it in-game first, I might have plausibly been unsure, since it doesn't look like an owl, and nothing says it's an owl, initially.

EDIT: I guess the Pokedex does call Hoothoot the "owl Pokemon," but then again, it also calls Sandshrew the "mouse Pokemon," so...

If you look down on others for having an innate disgust response that might warrant some self-reflection.

An innate disgust response to an acronym that most people don't really consider for even a second? Yes, I feel pretty comfortable not caring about those, and wondering why anybody would. I treat them all the same: They're literally nothing, they're just random internet acronyms. Being concerned with them so much that you have an actual "least favorite" implies there are perhaps other problems you may want to address.

EDIT: To be fair, I'm not saying this about anybody in this topic, who is simply answering the question since it was asked. If you're asked to choose one, then yes, you're obviously going to think about it. What I mean is just... Thinking about it that much, completely unprovoked. Seems like an odd thing to spend that much effort on.

They're not wrong, really. In 2022, when Rock actually had movies come out, he was in the top 10 highest grossing stars. Even in 2023, a year when he had barely anything come out, he was #25. He was literally #3 in 2021. He is, inarguably, one of the biggest actors, for better or worse.

EDIT: To be more specific... In 2023, his only actual credit was a cameo in Fast X, and he was #25. In 2022, his only credits were Black Adam and Super Pets, and he was #9. In 2021, he had Red Notice and Jungle Cruise, and he was #3.

I may be personally biased cause it's me, however thinking it makes more sense to deduce a owl's name being pronounced hooth-oot instead of hoot-hoot, when it's literally the sounds they're known for, is insane. It's literally just the same word repeating itself, so it's weird that they'd separate the second h from the rest of oot.

I mean, if the kid's never heard of an owl before and knows nothing about them I guess it makes sense.

The reason I think it's more likely to confuse a kid than an adult is because a kid is literally learning things like how "th" typically works, at that time, so they, more than anyone, may be confused by "wait, this is different?" Like, as adults, it's very easy for us to see what they're going for, but you're basically asking a kid to ignore something they were, probably likely quite literally JUST taught, which is why I could see a 7 year old having more difficulty with it.

Not to be a shithead, but I think you need to stop being so hotheaded, sweetheart.

Not actually being condescending, these were just the first three words that I could think of lol.

This is actually a fair point. That said, shithead isn't a real word, it's considered slang. And then the other two are arguably words that the average person may actually legitimately write out as "hot head" and "sweet heart" and not necessarily be wrong. That said, yes, those words do exist, good call.

Yeah, that's fine tho bc its name isn't an onomatopoeia and we shouldn't be expecting children to know every nuance of English grammar.

Hoothoot tho....cmon.

The point I'm making is literally every other word with a "th" in the middle makes the normal "th" sound. So, yes, if your mind locks in on "It's an owl, it has to be Hoot Hoot," then sure, but that goes against what you've been taught about how english works, so I'm certainly not going to fault somebody who thinks something like "Well, hither isn't hit-her." Especially since, again, even as "Hooth-oot," you still ultimately end with a "hoot"-ish sound.

To be fair, they presented the evidence, the judge ruled to exclude it, and they... Didn't really have an avenue, beyond that. Once a judge rules "No" to certain evidence, you have nobody else to appeal to, you have to wait to appeal the entire case.
