Yeah it's worded poorly, basically it's just learned behavior in the face of aggressors. There's also a lack of "older" Elephants to impart behaviors onto younger generations due to poaching. It's a whole thing that's hard to go into with a post or two. I remember reading it in some study awhile ago.
