Translator apps are incredibly effective these days and they are also free.

I knew someone from Japan who could barely speak any English and I couldn't speak a word of Japanese but we could communicate using those in real time.
Translator apps are fine but I hope they don't take away motivation to learn the language since I see the same workers for months with zero improvement.

All of that is your job, not theirs. As for the road signs, maybe you'd like to get in the car and deliver the food with them to make sure they're doing their actual job right? Or no, just focus on yours, cool.
Do you work my job? No? Then don't tell me what it is. You have no clue what you're talking about. Any alteration to the order goes to THEIR app, not ours. We see what the order was and put it together and put it on display for them. THEY'RE the ones who communicate with the companies they work for, or are supposed to.

When they can't use a single word or read a single line to see the order and makes everyone waste time, that's a problem. Everyone I work with agrees.

If I sound pissed off, it's because people like you have no idea what you're talking about.

I live in another country besides my home country, and learned enough of the language to get by.

I still think you are being incredibly harsh and kind of giving off bad-person vibes.

Maybe he just saw that you looked hostile and kind of racist and didnt want to communicate with someone who clearly has no respect for the struggle.
Here's another issue. It's not just about us as individuals, it's about the fact that I work at a very busy store with literally dozens of people and tons of orders. So If I look irritated (along with my coworkers) it's because I'm concentrating on making three or four other orders at once (which is common) and trying to do other things but then needing to stop and help a pick up driver get their thing in front of them which I assemble plenty of the time.

I'm on no high horse, I work my ass off.

Im gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you made this topic in good faith.

I get it. I have people come into my job that dont speak a lick of English. I dont work in food service either so when this happens its a lot more complicated than figuring out which food is theirs. With that being said as frustrating as it is you have show some compassion. The same way Im giving you benefit of the doubt right now that this isnt racist you need to realize maybe people are trying the best they can.

You dont know that these people arent trying to learn the language. You do know it doesnt happen overnight though. Take a deep breath dude. You will be ok. Like I said I completely get your frustration but that doesnt make it fair to be insensitive like this.

I'm not sure what you consider good or bad faith but I've pointed out I have sympathy for the fact they're doing what they need to do to make money. I also said it sucks that these companies they work for are very certainly fucking these poor saps over for paying them probably criminally under substantiated wages and preying upon their lack of skills with the language. (yes, I'll use that word again because that's the core of my argument) Would you trust a company that hires people who don't speak a single word?

It's strange to accuse racism when I would never mention any particular group of people. I've seen individuals from many different backgrounds who all equally fail to put a single sentence together, including Europeans.

Look, I hear what you're saying. But this isn't about me getting pissed off at people who walk up to me and shove a phone in my face with a blank stare (but that's apart of it which I will gladly not deny) but this is 2024 so while it's easy to use a phone to use shitty translation apps, it's also easy to use a phone to pick up even the basic phrases.

If they want to improve and learn English, great! I mean it. I'm happy for that. But it's just a pain when it cuts into other people's jobs and, even more than that (so this is beyond just me which is a big point of mine here so people get I'm not being selfish) when someone can't really communicate with those around them and these delivery companies cut every single corner they can with probably almost literal wage slavery.

Very ironic you are complaining about people not being able to do their job while bitching it make yours hard.

Quit crying. You have more than enough technology at your disposable to figure out what someone is trying to say. It shouldnt be needed anyway.
Ironic how? Their inability to speak the language inhibits their performance and infringes on mine.

If you have technology at your disposal you can dedicate time to learning the language instead. The technology I need comes from the directions I need to build the food. Anything after that is in their court not mine. I shouldn't need to take the time to stop what I'm doing when there are other coworkers and customers waiting for what they need while I help someone find something sitting in front of them.

Now maybe you understand it's about the dynamic as a whole, not just individuals. They can't do the job when they have more than enough technology to learn the language instead of relying on their phone for everything when they can't read a sign or speak a word to anybody.

As an immigrant in a non-English speaking country, I know plenty of people who have lived here for years and barely know ten words of the language. It strikes me as strange that nobody gives them a hard time for it, but in English speaking countries, immigrants who arent fluent are often given a hard time.
I don't know how long some of these guys have been here but it's the effort that counts, like you say.

And it's just fucking rude to stick a damn smart phone in my face with a silent blank stare when I'm working and the food is right in front of them. You can't use your phone for everything.

everyone needs work. Food delivery and Amazon are usually their first source of income due to the lack of needing to pass an interview. These people need an income while learning English.
First sentence in my post was "I'm fine with people making money while working here" but this is a job that needs communication skills. I ask simple things in English and the single only phrase is "No English." How many weeks, or days does it take to learn enough for basic communication?

And it's more than the individuals, these companies are really fucking shady for not needing English at all, it's predatory.

Uber Eats, Door Dash, Grub Hub etc.

I'm fine with people making money while being here. But learn the fucking language. I work in food service and it's very frustrating dealing with someone who silently just shoves a phone in your face with a blank expression about an order that's sitting right in front of them. I ask them if it's there and their reaction is to look at their phone and then look back at you just holding the phone in your face with the same blank expression. If I say anything else, they say "No English."

I don't want to hear shit about racism. I don't want to hear about English not being the official language. You need to speak the language that people speak in this country. Plenty of immigrants I've spoken to agree with me. They come here and learn the language. It's dangerous when someone relies on their phone for everything. What if they can't read road signs correctly? What if there's an alteration with the order? What if they need to fucking talk to someone? They can't do the job as well as they need to.

It's shady as fuck these companies hire people who are being taken advantage of and probably paid piss poor rates. Their reply is that they're "happy to work with people from all backgrounds" which is bullshit armor to protect themselves if rightfully complained against or sued.
