Frankly, the ratings are down not because people don't enjoy watching the events. The ratings are shit because the coverage is shit. NBC's monopoly is cancer and their coverage gets worse and worse every single year.

My last 2 PCs have been gaming laptops. I used to work nights so having a gaming laptop I could bring to work to pass the slow hours was a godsend. And I don't really have a proper desk space at home.

I would go desktop if I could. But that being said, I don't regret buying either gaming laptop and would do so again if I needed to.

TopicWhy is the internet so obsessed with "walkable" cities
Aristoph
06/11/24 5:34:06 PM
#64
I feel like TC literally just doesn't understand the concept of a walkable city.

The grocery thing is a non-issue. When you can walk to the store in 2 minutes, you don't need buy 400 pounds of groceries to stock up for weeks in advance. Feel like a salad for dinner? Go to the store and buy salad stuff. It takes 2 minutes. That's the point. You can buy things fresh as and when you need them because it's no longer a major inconvenience to go to the store. You end up with better/fresher meals and you waste less food because you don't buy enough at once for it to go bad before it's used.

Going to work is also not an issue because, hey, it's a fucking walkable city. You can walk to work. That's the point. And the few buses the city might have for public transportation are more efficient and more reliable because there's far less traffic on the roads to cause problems. But again, the point is for it to be walkable. Ideally you don't need any transportation.

And of course your current 17 minute commute would turn into an hour of hassle. You don't live in a walkable city.

Probably like how sometimes you get an achievement for starting the game and then check and only 85% of people who own the game have it

Wish I could remember what game it was, but I noticed something pretty strange in the achievement percentages once. The game had achievements for completing each level of the story. I was kind of surprised as I kept progressing and seeing level achievements with percentages still hovering around 90%. Normally it drops a whole lot faster the deeper you get into a game's story. But I was having a great time, so I just figured "it's a good game, of course people want to play it."

Then I hit somewhere around level 10 and saw it drop, in a single level, from ~85% to less than 20%. And I'm just sitting there thinking "what the fuck happened here??" Never did figure out what was up, as that level didn't feel particularly challenging or frustrating. And the rest of the game stayed right about 20% the rest of the way. So there was something specifically about that one stage that apparently just infuriated people into rage quitting the game.

you need all the players to function.

You literally don't. If the pitcher strikes out the side, the 7 players in the field didn't need to be out there that inning. The pitcher and the catcher are the only 2 positions that are required at all times (and batter from the other team, obviously). Everyone else spends the vast majority of their time standing and scratching themselves.

Someone could fall asleep while playing soccer and not affect anything either.

Being a man down in soccer is a devastating blow and you're nearly always going to lose unless it's a red card with like 5 minutes to go. You will struggle to gain possession of the ball because there is guaranteed to always be at least 1 person wide open for an outlet pass. You will struggle to maintain possession because they can simply double-team whoever has the ball at all times without sacrificing coverage of the rest of the field. It's not even remotely comparable.

So say if there were only 4 players on the field instead of 9, you'd not find it boring? Do you like any sports?

If someone can lay down and go to sleep on the field and not affect play, the sport inherently sucks. Not sure why this is so complicated.

Football is great. Basketball isn't really my thing, but the sport itself is fine. And big games can be very exciting. Soccer is also pretty great, even if it's more difficult to follow here in the U.S. without as much broadcast coverage. And plenty of other more niche or non-spectator sports like bowling. So yes, I like sports. Good sports. Not shit ones like baseball (or cricket, for similar reasons).

There are 9 players on the field. SEVEN of them could literally fall asleep and the game could continue unaffected if the pitcher is having a good day. The game is boring. Period.

Does moving on mean forgetting?

Absolutely not. You can never forget what you did because that potential is still inside of you. You've been down that path once, you can always go back down that path again. It's essential that you never forget that fact. But you also have to remind yourself that just because you can do those things again, that doesn't mean you will. If you keep working on yourself, if you pay attention to your triggers, if you notice the signs of that downward spiral beginning, it really is possible to go the rest of your life without "relapsing."

EDIT: I'm using "you" in the general sense, not specifically TC. Just to be clear on that.

A friend of mine with a rather questionable past once described it like a cup of salt.

So if you do something really terrible, it's like you've got a big cup full of salt. You try to swallow it and you just can't do it. If you continue making bad decisions and doing bad things, you keep adding more salt. But for every good choice and every good action, it's like you're adding a single drop of water. And if, over the rest of your life, you keep doing more and more good things...then eventually you've filled yourself a swimming pool. The bad stuff hasn't gone away. The salt is still in there. And if you're not careful and let the water evaporate away, you'll be left with just the salt again. But now it's been diluted by so many drops of water that you can drink it just fine. It's still salt water and still probably doesn't taste that great. But it's drinkable. The bigger you make your swimming pool, and the more diluted the salt becomes, the better it will taste at the end.

I don't think so. With the internet, parity is well-preserved. The majority of communication in English speaking countries is now done through internet devices, and a majority of those devices have built-in spellcheck. There's far less room for mutation.

That's literally the exact opposite of reality. The English language is evolving faster today than it ever has at any point in the past. Due mostly to the internet and social media. Spell check is basically irrelevant. Language doesn't evolve through typos. It evolves through the introduction of new concepts, words, and slang terms. Which is happening faster and faster as people become more connected and share new ideas faster and with larger audiences than has ever been possible. A new English word used to take years from the time it first cropped up in one region until someone on the other side of the globe even heard it for the very first time. Now it takes milliseconds.

I feel like most people will learn at least 1 secondary language as the world continues getting more and more connected. I don't expect places to give up on their native languages and switch to one "Earth Common" like most sci-fi seems to imply. I think that trope comes more from simple practicality of telling stories.

But I also don't know if most people would be truly fluent in both languages they speak. Like I technically speak English and French, but I haven't had occasion to use French in a very, very long time. So I could still muddle through simple conversations or like asking for directions, but I don't think I'd qualify as fluent anymore. But as the globe gets more and more interconnected, maybe people would have more chances to flex those language muscles and stay fluent?

Not really. You might take 20 years from a saint. You might take 20 years from an axe murderer. The person might get hit by a drunk driver the next day and that cycle would be essentially "free." It's completely random. I might hesitate if I had to personally choose the person every time.

All I know is that I'll have another 20 years of life, and I'll spend them trying to be the best person I can be. If anything, it would make me even more motivated to do something meaningful with my life. I'd be actively trying to make their sacrifice "worth it" in some way each time.

Is there a single person on Earth who goes their entire life without ever losing someone they love? I know I've lost many. I got through it every time before, and their memories and lessons I still carry with me today. Why would anybody suddenly become incapable of handling grief? It's a poor argument that I've never understood on any level. Especially since you will NEVER be able to say that everyone you've ever known is dead, because you won't stop meeting new people and forming new bonds. And they'll help you through it exactly the same as your current loved ones help you through losses as you get older normally.

Too many people focus solely on the heartache of loss, and act like the joyous occasions just wouldn't count anymore or something.
