How did you like doing that for NIN? It was my brother's favorite band for awhile and I like that "I won't let you fall apart" song and "Bites the hand that feeds" song so I know they got some variation, plus I've been replaying Quake here and there so Trent's been on the mind. Haven't committed but they seem interesting.

It's an interesting experience for sure, since NIN really runs through a respectable and varied gamut of genres from industrial to dance to dark ambient to metal. But it's a super rewarding experience, especially the pretty much flawless stretch from The Downward Spiral to Year Zero.

Unfortunately I just realized my playlist for NIN is all chewed up because of Youtube hiding most of the videos but here's a fragment of it anyway:

I've done this for bands and stuff too. I do them as Youtube playlists and try to limit myself to around 13 or 14 tracks like real albums. It's cool to see someone else does this too!

These are all I've done I think:

Led Zeppelin
Megadeth
Metallica
Miranda Lambert
Nine Inch Nails
Pearl Jam
Queen
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Resident Evil soundtracks
Silent Hill soundtracks

Sort of... I had known them for only maybe a year or two from this board in a song ranking topic I did before that news.

But I think Science Fiction was rather their big commercial break-through rather than critical, because The Devil and God was already well critically-acclaimed at that point.

One of the biggest influences on Gothic culture, horror, & vampiric lore in the 20th century. Rice's work often tackled themes of death & the nature of immortality that came directly from her own experiences and so she leaves us with much to ponder and learn from in our own lives still.

I feel like I have to apologize for the lack of updates lately. I feel like I'm currently spinning my wheels here and it's becoming a chore like homework I have to do, which I definitely don't want this series to be like. I don't want to outright say this is cancelled but rather updates will come whenever I'm feeling more inspired. Sorry to disappoint anyone but I'd rather admit this than deliver sub-par write-ups or anything like that. All my computer issues really put a tear in my sails unfortunately and I have a lot of other stuff going on right now too with the holidays, work, and such. This is tough for me to say, but better than leaving it bottled up inside me.

Ugh ugh ugh. I hate giving this game this low of a score, I really do. It's a great game with or without the story, but God does this story have real issues. I think we can safely start with Chris' role; his choice and motivation to withhold the truth from Ethan about Mia is just about the most pointless and nonsensical plot point in perhaps the entire series. It's literally only there to make the player wonder if Chris is truly evil or not, kind of a lazy story in and of itself, but also totally uninteresting because there's not a lot of input from the in-universe characters about this either. Something that's potentially cool for the player but does nothing for the actual characters is just useless and should've been thrown out. Of course, it doesn't help that Ethan is a total blank slate despite some lazy attempts to make him likable with one-liners that a 3rd grader could've came up with (admittedly, some of them ARE so bad, they're good). I barely any feel any drive or passion coming from Ethan which was also a major problem in RE7. There's legitimately more personality in his right hand than his entire body. The game also does very little with the reveal that he's been a Molded the entire time, even during the events of RE7, again, something shocking for the player but having very little relevance anywhere else besides Ethan's relationship to Rosemary and opening up whole cans of plot hole worms that are better left unthought about.

There is some good stuff too. All the villains are interesting and have just enough said about them to be fleshed-out but also still mysterious and scary. Donna's psychological horror section is well-thought out with fantastic attention to subtle detail to rival Silent Hill. The lore of Castle Dimitrescu felt a lot like uncovering the secrets of the Spencer Mansion all over again. You could feel the tragedy of Moreau through portrayal alone, and Heisenberg's factory provided feelings of industrial corruption and portrayed cogs in a war machine through tip-top level design helmed by someone less purely antagonistic, and more anti-villain. It's an awesome cast and their personalities and stories are forever etched in my head now.

The stuff with Spencer and Mother Miranda was fine but unnecessary but hell I admit seeing anything related to older lore is cool to me. The end of the game does have my curiosity piqued for the future as well. Most of this game however desperately needed major retooling, especially in regards to Chris and in my opinion it would've benefited greatly from giving the villains just a bit more screen time and ignoring the legacy stuff all together. And at least hopefully now we won't have to go through another game with Ethan at the helm.

Pinwheel's reputation for being the easiest boss in the whole game, maybe even the whole Dark Souls series, is only in jest of his frightening appearance and horrific backstory. Of course, even an "easy" boss in the series can prove to be quite the challenge, as he can summon endless clones to do battle with the Chosen Undead. I quite enjoy his intro, as it says a lot in few words. Dark Souls' endlessly creative enemy design comes through nicely here, with three masks indicating three distinct looks and personality, dark ambient music piercing anxiety into the heart, and an interesting use of framing and blocking to obscure the boss' full profile with a quick zoom-out all as we establish Pinwheel's apparent obsession with experimenting on the undead. In lore, Pinwheel is stated to be a necromancer who stole the power of the Gravelord, the lord of the dead. Pinwheel's theme provides more hints into the origins of this twisted being, with frantic whispering of "I'm so sorry" helping us connect the dots and implying that this person may have tried resurrecting his own family but ended up fusing with them and becoming the monstrous Pinwheel instead. I was disappointed this boss was as easy as it was, but the incredible attention to detail as per usual in the series still provides a small but interesting snapshot into the ever maddening world of Dark Souls.

99. Koh the Face Stealer - Avatar character (14 points)
Nominated by: Suprak the Stud (3/5 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IrTOkqQRx4

Importance: 1.5
Fear: 5
Snake: 7.5

Though a demonic character without many appearances to his name, Koh the Face Stealer has nevertheless made a sizable impact on the Avatar: The Last Airbender community. Koh is a spirit from ancient times with the body of a centipede and the ability to change faces at will. Koh is just about everything you could ask for in a short but sweet horror villain like this. Main character Aang meets with Koh inside his cave, and I love the sheer amount of non-stoicism portrayed by Aang here. Despite Koh's frightening appearance, Aang hangs steady which sort of diffuses any horror, but there's a lot of subtext here. Anyone showing even an ounce of emotion can have their face stolen, which gives the scene added tension despite some humorous overtones overall, such as when Koh roars at Aang in a jump-scare in the face of a monkey, or how Aang shows emotion behind Koh's back. It's a memorable scene and instantly made Koh stand out in the series as a psychological tormentor despite only having one real appearance in the whole series.
