The "they're shoving minorities down our throats" defense is rarely valid but there are examples of it. However, progressive tokenism is rampant in media right now because of mega corporations fishing for brownie points. And for some reason people hate corporations until they aim the marketing machine in their direction. Tokenism is bad representation any way you slice it. But there is proper representation. Eternals, as a recent example, showed an extremely diverse group of people that made sense within the narrative and was not unnecessarily brought attention to. The gay couple I'm sure especially ruffled feathers but it was done really well. That character was not defined by his sexuality, but his relationship was a big part of who he was and the main driving force for his motivation later on. You know, like people do. It was also not handwaved in an easily snipped-for-foreign-markets scene. --- |
