Unpopular opinion.

At that point you're not even tasting much of the patty anymore it ruins the texture.

It only needs one of those toppings, two at most. Sometimes none.

One, maybe two condiments is max for me. Maybe lettuce and tomato, or ketchup and mustard. Much more than that and it's basically a low quality salad

Lettuce and tomatoes are somehow both flavorless and over powering if you get a big bite of them. Pickless and onions are damn near mandatory though.

You know, I never liked pickles much until yesterday. On a whim I tossed some into a fried chicken sandwich, and it was sublime. I'll never look at them the same again.

Pickles are a good thing to try on most kinds of sandwiches. If you don't like the acidic nature, you can also sub in green papers for a somewhat similar effect.

too much cheese definitely ruins a burger

cheese doesn't enhance any flavor, just covers it, unlike the vegetables mentioned.

Cheese, onion, pickles (must be crunchy, none of that soggy shit), and Ray's Secret Sauce is my ideal burger(mustard (but not yellow) works too if there is no Ray's on hand). I'll also accept two of either crispy bacon, jalepenos, sauteed mushrooms, or onion straws if any of those are available. Absolutely no lettuce, tomato, or ketchup.

it varies

if you're going to a fancy place with emphasis on high quality burgers, then yes i agree

but if you're going to fast food or a bar or something where the quality isn't really why you're there, then it's okay to add some of those

except tomatoes. those belong in the trash or as spaghetti sauce or ketchup

Lettuce and onions are a good way to ruin a burger for me. Like full leaves of lettuce and the big ring of onions are fine since I can easily pull them off (and I don't notice an aftertaste from them being on either). But shredded lettuce and small, chopped up pieces of onion are the worst. Especially sincr I do notice an aftertaste that they leave behind + you often have to sacrifice a good bit of mustard/ketchup/etc. in order to get them off.

Acidic flavors act as a form of "appetizer" for the palette and make things taste more vibrant. Hence why mustard is also a popular choice on hamburgers or why vinegar is used in a ton of foods that you might not realize (deserts being the most "surprising" there).

As for pickles on burgers specifically it was a popular choice for Jewish people in New York and it stuck.

Hehe...I get it.

Though I will say, the Pickles used tend to be sweet...at least in the burgers.
I wouldn't want either, but it's not about Acidic flavor.
If they put a true pickle on the side, and I can eat it as an aperitif that is cool.
But for the love of god don't let them touch, please.

Having said all this, I have only had like 1 or 2 burgers in the last 2 years...so..

But ya, never got the Pickle thing.

Acidic, not sour. "Acidic" just refers to it getting its flavor from an acid, not because it has a distinctive quality in the standard sense of taste. Hence why you have "acidic spicy" (peppers), "acidic sour" (vinegar), "acidic sweet" (sugar), etc. You can use acids to enhance most everything and, in turn, they are used in almost everything. It's also similar to how the "umami" flavor isn't actually real as it mostly just refers to the taste of MSG (there is a lot of bagage there, though, so it gets complicated).

And, funnily enough, pickles originally were put on the side and eaten separately from the burger. So your feelings on the matter have historical precedence.

If you can get your hands on some quality ground beef you don't need nothing but a toasted bun and a couple veggies to balance things out.

I like all konds of combinations of stuff on my burgers. Onions are completely unacceptable unless they are those tiny crispy fried ones. Thos are fine as long as not excessive. Onion rings can be acceptable. It depends on the place and how they're made. I've had some I liked and some I haven't. Most other toppings and sauces are fair game, but some just don't go together. Lettuce, tomato, pickle is good. Sauteed mushrooms and peppers with arugula is good. Both combinations together? Well that's just fucking silly. Type of cheese depends on other stuff imo.

Haha, ya I get it!

I just noticed when a Pickle is meddling in something I did not ask it to, it's always a sweet one.
But, I'm lowering my talk to MC. D's level of shit..mostly.

Believe me, I deal with acidic wines and all that crap..

Long story short, I just don't like sweet with meat....though, I am curious about a honey chicken thing I want to make.
