The way things work for rich folks: they don't sell more of their boats because people are shoplifting.

They stop giving bonuses and cut the wages off of people that are lower on the totem pole.

Even if you were to steal directly from their houses, well they are covered by insurance, and when insurance has to pay out on claims, they go up on their premiums for everyone, rich or poor.

So shoplifting or looting your local target and Walmart because they are insured is not actually a virtuous thing to do, believe it or not, because rich people are not going to foot the bill. That is a fantasy. They always figure out a way to pass it on to the common man.

Basically, in some markets costs go up, prices go up more. Costs go down, prices stay the same (sticky-up). McDonald's is usually very reluctant to raise prices, but when given an excuse ("Hey, there's inflation, sorry, not out fault,") they take it. Higher prices means higher margins. Later, prices of shipping and meat go down, but McD's customers are already used to new prices and no one else is competing for bottom-dollar burgers, so even better margins and more room to expand.

Here's the thing though. They aren't going to charge more money for a chicken sandwich or burrito than customers are willing to pay. No one is being forced to buy Chik-Fil-A or Chipotle. They could go to Taco Bell or better yet, cook at home.

I agree that the cost of housing has gone up. But its closer to double than 11 times. I still think housing being twice as more expensive now is still a very significant increase. The market demands a two income household so a single parent buying a house is extremely difficult today.

$30k was from the area I am familiar with as that it was homes had cost at the time. Maybe not the fanciest, but great for new families.

I thought you were comparing just in the Bay Area so that is why I was saying in other places you could find $30k houses.

It is completely doable for that same 23 yr old single mother to get a nice house $0 down in a rural area as a starter home. Keep it 5-10 years and sell, use the profits to move closer to where you want to be and hopefully you have a better job or degree within that 5-10 yrs.
