xbox record that
xbox record that

XBOX. RECORD. THAT.

goes to dashboard instead

I loved the 360. I was an extremely early adopter of the Xbox One. I hated it. The Kinect barely worked and I paid like 150 extra for it with the edition I bought. The One's UI was built around the idea you would be using the hand gestures and was not fun to use with a controller.

the tech was cool. But I've never liked motion controls beyond something for novelty.

I am visiting my family for the holidays.

Our house is in an unincorpsted hamlet of around 50 people.

The nearest town is 8 miles away and it has 900 people. The county has around 8000 people. We have one stoplight in the entire county. We have a single Dairy Queen and a Subway.

There is no cell coverage at my parents house and the internet is 1.5 mbs via dsl.

I get a laugh out of what city folks think is a small town.

My father died from covid last Christmas day. He worked a job that put him near the sick and dying. He caught and the rest the household. I don't live with my parents. Everyone else got better He just kept getting worse. A man I knew that never called off work, barely ever got sick, was reduce to bed sores and dissolved lungs. My father was one of my rocks in life. We didn't always get along but he was the first to help me in times of need and one of my most cherished councilors. He died after two weeks alone in an ICU. My family rushed to his bed in the midst of a blizzard, covered in PPE just to be with him as he passed. He had no chance for a vaccine. He caught it too soon.

I grew up in a really small town. I had a good childhood. I was raised around decent people. They talked of values like how you owe the community something and how looking out for others is your moral and patriotic duty. People fly American flags, support the troops, and many enlist in the military out of a sense of giving back to the country they love.

Yet the pandemic saw the death of these values. Local doctors and RNs -- ones that have taken care of grandma, your kids, and friends for years -- mocked as being in on a globalist conspiracy. Those that clad themselves in the colors that don't run fleeing from their obligations to their community. Community leaders acting like the community fools -- with pride on their faces! Empathy taught on Sunday withheld because so and so deserved it -- covid only strikes the weak and meek and those people certainly are not of the kingdom of God!

It renders me heartbroken.

furb

There's actually a theory in political science that is something along these lines. To boil it down.

We treat politicians so poorly it actively discourages moral or well adjusted people from participating. Politicians get trashed constantly, regardless of how they act. People complain at them constantly regardless of how they act. The public criticizes all elements of their personal lives and attack their family members. Empathy and sensitivity is a liability.

The logic goes that this mechanism would winnow out all but sociopaths or others with malformed personalities. Some decent people manage to get through but the process takes a heavy toll on them either warping their personalities in the process or driving them out of politics after a short period.

Not saying its right but it is food for thought given your argument. There are plenty of stories of regular people running for like school board wanting to make real change, but quitting because the public is just so terrible to them 24/7.

The main counter argument is you want really tough people in positions of authority.

Former fraternity member here

Parties generally have these vague rules -- both fraternity and general "at a friend's place" parties.

There is always the "general beer". This is like Natural Light/Ice, Keystone, or Beast. You can drink it by virtue of being at the party. You can BYOB, but unless you know someone hosting, you're beer is gonna disappear. The host will help you find the secret/private fridge though and that will help on beer theft.

Hosts will have direct access to the secret fridge and access to the best beer/liquor at the party. They might share, they might not. Don't complain if you're chugging steel reserve and the bros have the good stuff. They paid for it. You''re getting free beer after all.

Hang around long enough, and the alcohol generally just gets shared once everybody is drunk enough and you're cool -- see not begging.

That was my experience. Adult parties tend to work similarly but the "general beer" is better than Keystone.

Solo cups vary by setting and norms. Some places like cans to bottles.

Last edit

Rules change for paid entry parties or if there is live entertainment.

I have some sort of mental block learning languages other than English. So no. I doubt it.

I took Spanish 1-4 in college and I can't read it or speak it. I tried taking Greek and washed out of it. I took Spanish in high school too. Didn't stick.

My brain can't get over the "immediacy" part. I always have to translate mentally into and out of English. I can't just "speak" or "read" a second language.

It's a similar issue I have with mathematics. I can't do math with "immediacy" either. I almost always have to think about the specific steps to an answer whereas my math friends just sorta "pop" out answers with high speed.

The irony is I've had a high command of English language since a young age. My strongest academic skills are in writing and reading and interpreting meanings in English. English is encoded in my brain to such a strong degree that it feels like it actively thwarts mental space for others.
